About Dog Brothers Martial Arts Dog Brothers Martial Arts (DBMA) is a system of many styles where the ultimate goal is to “walk as a warrior for all your days™.” As such we have an ap- proach that is in search of the totality of both ritual combat (sport fighting such as Mixed Martial Arts/Vale Tudo, Muay Kickboxing, Brazilian Jiu Jitsu and others) and reality (practical street defense, weapon awareness, and uneven odds). This means that the greater mission is to have real skills throughout the entirety of one’s life—not just when one is young and competitive. Considerable thought and experience has gone into the development of this cur- riculum, and as is the case with all things taught in the DBMA curriculum: “If you see it taught, you see it fought.™” The curriculum is divided into 3 areas: Real Contact Stick Fighting, Kali Tudo™ and Die Less Often. Today we’re speaking with Guru Marc Denny, Marc “Crafty” Denny of the Dog Brothers. How are you doing today? Marc Denny: That would be Marc “Crafty Dog”. It’s sort of the sobercat but anyway yes, I’m glad to be here. Levi Wampler: Could you tell us how you got your start in the martial arts? Marc Denny: Well, growing up in New York City, I had various incidents that are part of the New York experience. Being chased by junkies down subways platforms or having three guys jump on my bicycle in the park or getting jumped by four guys on the stairs in school and after getting stomped, they took my wallet, that kind of a thing. Then my summer between college and law school, I wound up in Mexico and there was a fight down in Southern Mexico in the State of Chiapas where a Mexican friend of mine and I, we had picked up these two blonde American girls and some of the locals were all hot to chat with them and they grabbed one of the girls and started dragging them off. So, there was a big fight.

Marc "Crafty Dog" Denny Co-founder: The Dog Brothers President: Dog Brothers Inc.Martial Arts Head Instructor: Dog Brothers Martial Arts The Laboratory for Stickfighters The Dog Brothers have taken theoretical stickfighting and thrown it right into the laboratory using themselves as the guinea pigs. Science is a fine discipline. The quest for truth guides the scientist to look for new ideas that can tackle old problems. Years of schooling in the basics give the researcher the necessary knowledge to delve deep into his subject and produce new theories. Many martial artists take this same approach toward their respective arts. We train in the basics and eventually reach a level where new combinations, attacks, or defenses are discovered. In the realm of stickfighting, this has been happening for hundreds of years. There are so many variables that come into play in stickfighting that the possibilities are endless. The stick can move at great speed while maintaining the ability to change direction in a millisecond. The force generated is considerable-definitely in the bone- breaking category. Besides wielding the weapon, the combatant's fists, elbows, knees and feet still work effectively against an unprotected target. Combining these elements leads to a vast array of techniques that range from the very simple to the extremely complex. Through practice and play, stickfighters have discovered so many ways of defending against an opponent that it would literally take many lifetimes to get through most of the possibilities. These techniques have been developed just as the scientist develops a possible solution to an aeronautical problem.
