NEW-YORK HISTORICAL SOCIETY NAMES PRESIDENT AS NEW BOARD MEMBER Lloyd Blankfein Brings Abundance of Experience in Finance and Non-Profit Work as he Joins Other Members of Class of 2007

September 28, 2004, New York, NY- The New York-Historical Society is pleased to announce a new addition to its Board of Trustees. Lloyd Blankfein, President and Chief Operating Officer of The Goldman Sachs Group, was recently approved by the Board in a unanimous vote. Mr. Blankfein joins the New-York Historical Society as it kicks off its bicentennial anniversary with an unprecedented exhibition on Alexander Hamilton, one of the most prominent individuals in both New York and American history. This “blockbuster” exhibition features priceless documents such as an original copy of the Declaration of Independence and the Constitution as well as the original pistols used in the fateful duel between Hamilton and then-Vice President Aaron Burr.

“I am thrilled to join the Board of this wonderful institution and I look forward to helping to guide it into its third century of showcasing New York’s relationship to American history,” said Mr. Blankfein. “New York has such an inextricable connection to the birth and evolution of our country. Our goal is to tell these stories in the most compelling way to the thousands of visitors that walk through our doors every year.”

Mr. Blankfein has been with Goldman Sachs for more than 20 years. After being named Partner in 1988, Lloyd was named co-head of the J. Aron Currency and Commodities Division in 1994 and was elevated to Managing Director in 1996. Lloyd was co-director of Fixed Income, Currency and Commodities Division from its inception in 1997 and was based in in 1998 and 1999 in this capacity. Prior to his current title, Mr. Blankfein served as Vice Chairman of Goldman Sachs. Before joining the company in 1982, Lloyd was an attorney in a private law firm. He received his J.D. from in 1978 and his A.B. from in 1975. In addition to his volunteer position with the Historical Society, Lloyd is also Director of the and Chairman of the Financial Aid Task Force at . He and his wife Laura live in with their two children.

Mr. Blankfein’s three year term begins immediately, as he joins other members of the Class of 2007, including William Beekman-Partner with Debevoise & Plimpton, David Blight- Professor of History at Yale University, Susan Braddock- President of the Metropolitan Opera Guild, Ric Burns- noted filmmaker, and founder of Steeplechase Films, Richard Gelfond- Co-Chairman & Co-CEO of IMAX Corporation and Richard Hayden- Managing Principal of Swanke Hayden Cornell Architects .
