    Volume 1 Issue 6 May 2018 AAPRCO & RPCA members meet to develop their response to new Amtrak regulations Members of the two associations met in New Orleans last week to further develop their response to new regulations being imposed by Amtrak on their members’ private railroad car businesses. Several of those vintage railroad cars were parked in New Orleans Union Station. “Most of our owners are small business people, and these new policies are forcing many of them to close or curtail their operations,” said AAPRCO President Bob Donnelley. “It is also negatively impacting their employees, suppliers and the hospitality industry that works with these private rail car trips,” added RPCA President Roger Fuehring. Currently about 200 private cars travel hundreds of thousands of miles behind regularly scheduled Amtrak trains each year. Along with special train excursions, they add nearly $10 million dollars in high margin revenue annually to the bottom line of the tax-payer subsidized passenger railroad. A 12% rate increase was imposed May 1 with just two weeks’ notice . This followed a longstanding pattern of increases taking effect annually on October 1. Cost data is being developed by economic expert Bruce Horowitz for presentation to Amtrak as are legal options. Members of both organizations are being asked to continue writing their Congress members and engaging the press. Successes on the legislative front include this Congressional letter sent to Amtrak's president and the Board and inclusion of private car and charter train issues in recent hearings.

    Stainless steel streamlined passenger cars with roof-mounted glass domes were introduced to America in 1947 on this prototype "Train of Tomorrow". General Motors and Pullman-Standard collaborated to demonstrate to both the public and to the railroads what passenger travel would be like in the fifties. The Fall 1979 issue of Model Railroading magazine carried fe atures on how to model the locomotive and the four-car train using ready-to-run HO or N scale equipment with minor modifications. Since then, we've located a photograph of the "Train of Tomorrow" when it was still in its blue and stainless steel paint scheme. The train is on exhibit to the public at Albuquerque, New Mexico in about 1947. The entire train was sold to the Union Pacific in 1950 and repainted in their standard yellow and grey. The f6 diesels and streamlined cars were duplicated and sold to almost every class one railroad in America. Photo frolll the Gordon Bassett collection.     January 10, 1940 Hammond Time Monon Plans No Tower Changes The Monon railroad does not propose to move towers from Fayette, Russell, Clinton and Douglas street crossings in Hammond. This was indicated by A. Anderson, chief engineer, who notified board of works and safety-members that the line will not undertake a project which the city will not approve, nor will the railroad violate any city ordinances in changing crossing protection. Residents became aroused recently when it was reported that the railroad planned to operate gates on two crossings from a single tower erected midway between the crossings. The company now is installing a compressor that will furnish air at a central point. Pipe lines are near completion. They will carry air to different towers and will spare towerman the job of operating hand pumps. Combining the operation of gates at more than one crossing has been marked with success in numerous cities, officials said. Monon Hearing On Trains Ends The Indiana Public Service Commission concluded evidence in the Monon railroad company‘s petition to discontinue two train runs between Chicago and Indianapolis at a hearing yesterday in Delphi, Ind. The commission announced it would take the petition under advisement and release a ruling in the near future. Most of the evidence consisted of remonstrances against the proposed discontinuance.     Inventory of the W.W. Embree DeKalb, Illinois Collection In the Regional History Center RC 2 1 INTRODUCTION Mrs. Waite Embree and Mr. George D. Embree donated the Waite W. Embree Collection to the Regional History Collections of the University Archives in March 1967. Northern Illinois University Archivist J. Joseph Bauxar and history Professor Earl Hayter brought this collection to the University, thus preserving the single most significant group of historical records documenting the heritage of the DeKalb area. In the spring of 1978 Mr. Bauxar transferred the collection to the Regional History Center. Property rights in the collection are held by the Regional History Center; literary rights are dedicated to the public. There are no restrictions to the collection. It is important to note that Embree was a collector: indeed, in the absence of an active county historical society, Waite Embree filled a void in DeKalb County with his keen interest in the preservation of the county’s past for many decades.     Railfan's Diary Home to Virginia from Seattle, the Long Way Or He Definitely Has Too Much Free Time on his Hands! by Jim Mixter Part I-- Five years ago, Lolly and I flew out to Seattle to see my oldest relative, then 90, and we came home to Northern Virginia on the Empire Builder and the Capitol Limited, with late February weather conspiring to turn a three day, three night trip into five days and nights, though Amtrak took good care of us and we enjoyed the journey. With my uncle now 95, it was time to visit him again, though Lolly couldn’t make this trip. So, on Wednesday, October 26, I flew via United from Reagan National Airport in Washington to Chicago and then Seattle. I had traveled extensively on both United and Continental during my working career, and often earned elite frequent flyer status, but that had ended when I retired. Then, Continental merged with United. Lolly and I flew a United round trip to Houston after the merger; little did I know that this put me over the one million lifetime mile mark with the merged airline. A few days later, I received a package by FedEx with a Lucite memento and the news that I had been awarded Gold status for life!! We don’t fly much anymore, and when we do, we go the cheapest way, often Southwest or one of the start- up carriers. But I found I could fly to Seattle for $210 on United, and my Gold would enable me to upgrade to First Class 48 hours before travel if space was available.
