Yesterday, America was a boundless wilderness. The Indian knew the intricacies of its trails and waterways. By canoe, piroque, the horse and crude travois he penetrated the great unknown. Father Marquette, Joliet and voyageurs reached the shores of Lake Michigan in 1673. They were the advance guard of transport, pushing the frontier westward.
