Then in this year of 2010 there occurs the 260th anniversary of his birth. This presentation is an attempt to look at the work and life of the saint from a perspective that is wider than that of the Re- demptorist Congregation to which he was fully dedicated. Alt- hough Hofbauer was someone who aimed at establishing a firm unity between people of different nationalities, social strata, reli- gions and generations, he was nevertheless rooted within his own epoch with all of its reality and limitations, and at the same time was always faithful to his spiritual roots. -

The University of Texas at Austin, 2004 Supervisor: Katherine Arens This dissertation tests Benedict Anderson’s thesis about the coherence of imagined communities by tracing how Galicia, as the heart of a Polish culture in the nineteenth century that would never be an independent nation state, emerged as an historical, cultural touchstone with present day significance for the people of Europe. After the three Partitions and Poland’s complete disappearance from political maps of Europe, substitute images of Poland were sought that could replace its lost kingdom with alternate forms of national identity grounded in culture and tradition rather than in politics. Not the hereditary dynasty, not Prussia or Russia, but Galicia emerged as the imagined and representative center of a Polish culture without a state. This dissertation juxtaposes political realities with canonical literary texts that provide images of a cultural community among ethnic Germans and Poles sharing the border of Europe. -

The beginning of its history goes back to the times when Prussian tribes belonging to the Balts lived here. MADAME DE STAËL – MÉDIATRICE FRANCO-ALLEMANDE Professeur Thomas Keller (Aix-Marseille Université) Introduction : Mme de Staël ethnographe Dans ses entretiens avec Didier Eribon, Claude Lévi-Strauss rapporte, d’une façon bien inattendue, un propos de Madame de Staël1: voyager est, quoi qu’on puisse dire, un des plus tristes plaisirs de la vie. La citation vient de Corinne ou l’Italie, elle se trouve au début du chapitre II. Lévi-Strauss partage l’aversion, comme le montre le célèbre incipit dans Tristes Tropiques : Je hais les voyages et les explorateurs. Par cette exclamation, il se tourne contre l’exotisme et le goût pour l’aventure. Il constate une parenté : Mme de Staël, voyageuse en terre étrangère comme lui, explore et garde ses distances. Elle noue des contacts et collecte des informations pour les soumettre à ses analyses. Elle ne pratique ni une conversion à l’autre culture (going native), ni la méthode de l’observation participante préconisée par beaucoup d’ethnologues. Ainsi peut-on dire que Mme de Staël est ethnographe (et sociologue) avant la lettre tout en gardant ses distances. Quant à son voyage en Allemagne, son exploration s’appuie sur un écart, une différence de niveau qui sépare les Allemands et les Français. Le pays voisin est moins développé, moins technisé, il offre moins de confort, moins de société. Il n’a pas de capitale, pas de public centralisé. Cependant sa culture est d’un grand intérêt. Le contact avec les gens du peuple est moins important que la présentation des philosophes et artistes et l’analyse de leurs œuvres. -

Eaton 1 Abstract Exclave: Politics, Ideology, and Everyday Life in Königsberg-Kaliningrad, 1928-1948 by Nicole M. Eaton Doctor of Philosophy in History University of California, Berkeley Professor Yuri Slezkine, Chair “Exclave: Politics, Ideology, and Everyday Life in Königsberg-Kaliningrad, 1928-1948,” looks at the history of one city in both Hitler’s Germany and Stalin’s Soviet Russia, follow- ing the transformation of Königsberg from an East Prussian city into a Nazi German city, its destruction in the war, and its postwar rebirth as the Soviet Russian city of Kaliningrad. The city is peculiar in the history of Europe as a double exclave, first separated from Germany by the Polish Corridor, later separated from the mainland of Soviet Russia. The dissertation analyzes the ways in which each regime tried to transform the city and its inhabitants, fo- cusing on Nazi and Soviet attempts to reconfigure urban space (the physical and symbolic landscape of the city, its public areas, markets, streets, and buildings); refashion the body (through work, leisure, nutrition, and healthcare); and reconstitute the mind (through vari- ous forms of education and propaganda). Between these two urban revolutions, it tells the story of the violent encounter between them in the spring of 1945: one of the largest offen- sives of the Second World War, one of the greatest civilian exoduses in human history, and one of the most violent encounters between the Soviet army and a civilian population. -

1 Staking Out the Battlefield1 The woman warrior in German culture randishing their swords, a regiment of women warriors strides across B the battlefield of German culture2—on the stage, in the opera house, on the page, and in paintings and prints. These warriors are the subject of this book. In some cases they are depictions of historical figures—Joan of Arc (1412–31), Charlotte Corday (1768–93), Eleonore Prochaska (1785–1813)— but in most cases they are re-imaginings of women warriors to be found in mythology, ancient and medieval history, and the Bible. These ancient sources of western culture tell stories about the woman warrior because she is, by definition, a transgressive and therefore frightening figure. Just as these sources tell stories about other terrifying visions—the son sleeping with his mother, the father sacrificing his own child, the mother killing her children— so they tell them about the woman who leaves her proper female sphere, takes up a weapon, goes to war and, in some cases, even kills. She may be doing this from the best of motives, she may be mandated by God, the gods, or her own people, but the idea of a woman with the potential to kill causes deep unease. Such a woman has to be made safe by being tamed in some way—either by death, by defloration, or both. The fact that so many of these fantasies are of ancient origin lends them a peculiar authority. Women must be like this, is the implication, since ‘people’ have always imagined them like this. -

‘Eyes on Malta’. Fresh Light on Fiction and Reality behind Some Characters in E.T.A. Hoffmann’s Die Jesuiterkirche in G. Thomas Freller [email protected] Abstract: In 1816 one of the most popular authors of the German Romantic movement, Ernst Theodor Amadeus Hoffmann, published the novella Die Jesuiterkirche in G. Its central figure is a Maltese connoisseur of the arts who is presented as a very strange and rakish character. He shows the principal character of the novella, the painter Berthold, a new track to see and perceive his environment and to express personal sentiments in his works. This very much parallels the then avant-garde concepts of Romantic art. Literary historians have not investigated the figure of this mysterious Maltese. What were Hoffmann’s sources and stimulations to create this character? The investigation of the genesis ofDie Jesuiterkirche in G. leads to an intriguing story and to the famous Maltese eye-surgeon and arts connoisseur Dr Joseph Barth. Keywords: E.T.A. Ernst Theodor Amadeus Hoffmann had finished the manuscript in August of 1816. The Literary Gazette and Journal of Belles Lettres published an English translation ('The Jesuit Church in G.') in 1845. Die Jesuiterkirche in G. draws back to Hoffmann’s sojourn in the Silesian city of Glogau (= ‘G.’), then part of Prussia, in 1796/97, when he was an auscultator which was the first part of the studies of law. -

The Birth of German Art: Italia and Germania Written by: Luke Peterson February 2006 Art 469: Methods and Theory of Art History Prof. Kirsi Peltomaki The Birth of German Art: Italia and Germania The German Romantic period is a critical moment in European art history; a moment recognized as the first modem movement in terms of artist originality and ingenuity regarding past and future. 1 Johann Friedrich Overbeck (1789-1869) played a pivotal role in the development of Romantic philosophy and the establishment of a unique German style. This paper will analyze the substantial stylistic changes brought about by Overbeck (evident in Italia and Germania [Figure 5]) which stand not alone, but are also a product of numerous socioeconomic factors. The approach of this paper is the synthesis of ideologies from Heinrich WOlfflin's Principles of Art History (1915) and Janet Wolff s The Social Production of Art (1983.) WOlfflin's idea that "[An art movement] is neither a rise nor decline from the classic, but a totally different art,"2 is reoccurring idea present in the discussion of the value of Romantic art. While I will explore the stylistic traits and progression that made the Romantic era unique, I will also examine social influences.
