Aesthetically Driven Design of Network Based Multi-User Instruments
Aesthetically Driven Design of Network Based Multi-User Instruments by Curtis McKinney A thesis submitted to the faculty of Bournemouth University in partial fulfilment of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy in the School of Design, Engineering, and Computing July 2014 This copy of the thesis has been supplied on condition that anyone who consults it is understood to recognise that its copyright rests with its author and due acknowl- edgement must always be made of the use of any material contained in, or derived from, this thesis. I Aesthetically Driven Design of Network Based Multi-User Instruments Curtis McKinney Abstract Digital networking technologies open up a new world of possibilities for mu- sic making, allowing performers to collaborate in ways not possible before. Net- work based Multi-User Instruments (NMIs) are one novel method of musical collaboration that take advantage of networking technology. NMIs are digital musical instruments that exist as a single entity instantiated over several nodes in a network and are performed simultaneously by multiple musicians in real- time. This new avenue is exciting, but it begs the question of how does one design instruments for this new medium? This research explores the use of an aesthetically driven design process to guide the design, construction, rehearsal, and performance of a series of NMIs. This is an iterative process that makes use of a regularly rehearsing and performing ensemble which serves as a test-bed for new instruments, from conception, to design, to implementation, to performance. This research includes details of several NMIs constructed in accordance with this design process. -

Hydrax-Manual
BCI The game "Hydrax" is a new concept in Adventure Games. It seeks to combine the best features of an Adventure Game with the action and graphics of an Arcade Game. As an adventurer you will be required to solve puzzles and riddles while exploring a vast underground world in your quest to find and defeat Hydrax. As an arcader you will use a joystick to control the hero and to fight various unfriendly creatures which inhabit the cave. The game is played in two ways, by means of the joystick, when fast action to defeat an enemy is required, and by typed commands if a more thoughtful solution is required. Pressing the space bar on the computer will freeze all action and allow you to type in a command. Commands may be single words or sentences. e.g. (i) LOOK-will tell you about the room (ii) OFFER 10 GOLD PIECES TO WITCH SOME USE.FUL COMMANDS INVENTORY - tells what you are currently carrying and how many life points you have left. SAVE GAME - saves game to disk (see note). EXITS FROM CAVERN The exits are left, right, back, front, up, and down. A cavern may have only one exit or any combination of six. All exits are normally visible on the screen except the front. The joystick can be used to walk through a left or right exit. JOYSTICK The joystick is used for walking, jumping, ducking, swimming and fighting. To fight you must carry a sword. Press fire button and direction of the joystick will point the sword. -

Lucasarts and the Design of Successful Adventure Games
LucasArts and the Design of Successful Adventure Games: The True Secret of Monkey Island by Cameron Warren 5056794 for STS 145 Winter 2003 March 18, 2003 2 The history of computer adventure gaming is a long one, dating back to the first visits of Will Crowther to the Mammoth Caves back in the 1960s and 1970s (Jerz). How then did a wannabe pirate with a preposterous name manage to hijack the original computer game genre, starring in some of the most memorable adventures ever to grace the personal computer? Is it the yearning of game players to participate in swashbuckling adventures? The allure of life as a pirate? A craving to be on the high seas? Strangely enough, the Monkey Island series of games by LucasArts satisfies none of these desires; it manages to keep the attention of gamers through an admirable mix of humorous dialogue and inventive puzzles. The strength of this formula has allowed the Monkey Island series, along with the other varied adventure game offerings from LucasArts, to remain a viable alternative in a computer game marketplace increasingly filled with big- budget first-person shooters and real-time strategy games. Indeed, the LucasArts adventure games are the last stronghold of adventure gaming in America. What has allowed LucasArts to create games that continue to be successful in a genre that has floundered so much in recent years? The solution to this problem is found through examining the history of Monkey Island. LucasArts’ secret to success is the combination of tradition and evolution. With each successive title, Monkey Island has made significant strides in technology, while at the same time staying true to a basic gameplay formula. -
English with Guybrush Threepwood and the Secret of Monkey Island Learning English Grammar Through Computer Games at Swedish Junior High School Level
English with Guybrush Threepwood and the Secret of Monkey Island Learning English grammar through computer games at Swedish junior high school level Author: Mikael Manneklint Supervisor: Ibolya Maricic Examiner: Christopher Allen Date: 8th June 2015 Subject: Language Didactics Level: Advanced level Course code: GO1304 Abstract The computer has been a part of the language learning since the 1950’s. It has had many roles in the classroom and the potential usage of it is ever changing and evolving. Today the computer is widely used around the world as equipment for entertaining and game playing. When it comes to game playing it has been confirmed that it can be very effective in teaching. This is also true for language learning. This study aims to investigate if a non-educational game, the Secret of Monkey Island, could be potentially used to teach English grammar to Swedish learners of English at junior high school, year 7. This is done through a comparison study where two groups of students receives different exposure to the target grammar followed by a test in order to establish to what extent the game can be used in inductive grammar teaching. The results of this study showed that the game in fact can be used as a tool for learning English grammar. However, the students who played the computer game did not reach the same level of learning outcome as the students who received traditional teaching. The study also indicated some differences in achievement between boys and girls where the boys favored game-based learning and the girls performed better after traditional teaching. -

Quake Manual
The Story QUAKE Background: You get the phone call at 4 a.m. By 5:30 you're in the secret installation. The commander explains tersely, "It's about the Slipgate device. Once we perfect these, we'll be able to use them to transport people and cargo from one place to another instantly. "An enemy codenamed Quake, is using his own slipgates to insert death squads inside our bases to kill, steal, and kidnap. "The hell of it is we have no idea where he's from. Our top scientists think Quake's not from Earth, but another dimension. They say Quake's preparing to unleash his real army, whatever that is. "You're our best man. This is Operation Counterstrike and you're in charge. Find Quake, and stop him ... or it ... You have full authority to requisition anything you need. If the eggheads are right, all our lives are expendable." Prelude to Destruction: While scouting the neighborhood, you hear shots back at the base. Damn, that Quake bastard works fast! He heard about Operation Counterstrike, and hit first. Racing back, you see the place is overrun. You are almost certainly the only survivor. Operation Counterstrike is over. Except for you. You know that the heart of the installation holds a slipgate. Since Quake's killers came through, it is still set to his dimension. You can use it to get loose in his hometown. Maybe you can get to the asshole personally. You pump a round into your shotgun, and get moving.
