The agony I have felt for those who have become slaves to addiction has driven me to provide effective information and services. In this, the 2017 edition of Like Dragons Did They Fight, we made a special effort to make the content more gender neutral and broadened the scope to apply to those who may not be struggling with addiction, but would like to better understand how to use the same principles for self- mastery. Some sections are still specifically directed toward young men, but you are welcome to expand the application to yourself. In addition to our Sons of Helaman training system, we now have Men of Moroni for adult men and Daughters of Light for women of all ages. If you just want to work on self-mastery and are not experiencing an addiction, look into our Eternal Warriors program. For mothers who aren’t sure how to help, look into the free Mothers Who Know service. If you are a woman who has been traumatized by the sexual misbehaviors of your husband, you will want to look into our free therapeutic group, W-O-R-T-H: Women of Rebirth – Therapeutic Healing. Before I proceed, I will add a quick disclaimer: I have spent my professional career simplifying complex psychological concepts so they are easily understood by the layman, especially teenagers. The concepts behind what you are about to read are scientifically sound. I write this book for those who are in pain and would like to experience the joy of self-mastery. Most of the principles you read here can be validated in either LDS doctrine as found in scriptures and conference talks, or psychology research and/or text books. Some of the principles here are from my own insights, observations and revelations over the past 25 years. These principles are not new. They have been available forever, for all to discover. Many have found them to be of great value as they try to understand the bridge between spiritual and scientific concepts. As with other literature intended to inspire, I will not be able to provide scientific proof of all you read. To gain maximum value from what you are about to read, carefully ponder the principles with a mind open to both sharp scientific concepts and spiritual manifestation. Had me thinking about swing dynamics and how you might improve your approach, mechanics of the swing, and contact with the ball. The first step for the pro is to analyze the swing you have. Watch it. Today and over the next couple of months, we want to do just that with our lives. We want to analyze our “swing” and tweak it, or scrap it altogether, for the better way. We will begin in earnest a series called Kingdom Ethic, studying the Sermon on the Mount to discover the way of life in Christ. What we are called to, and the radical nature of following Jesus when the “Kingdom is at hand.” Bridging to how we might live - which there seems to be a fair bit of opinion floating around as of late - we start with awareness of how not to live. What’s more, recognizing the Tempter that is furiously trying to move us off the mark, to rob Jesus of glory. The fish bite the lure because they think it is a bug - we don’t want to fall for it.     SJ#292 (Pastor Schaser: Lent - C) James 4:7-10 “Fighting Temptation: The Sin Cycle” “AGAIN, the Israelites did evil in the eyes of the LORD” (Judges 10:6). Do you sense the frustration behind that word AGAIN? No book of the Bible pictures the cyclical nature of the human struggle with sin better than the 300-year period of Israel’s history known as the Judges. The temptations to worship other gods, wealth, pleasure, or people would come and many of the people of Israel would give in to the temptations. God would call the nation of Israel to repentance by using a foreign army to attack Israel and force them to bear arms. After a period of warfare, the nation of Israel would repent. God would forgive them and would send a judge to deliver them from the foreign enemy. This sin cycle repeated itself over and over and over again for 300 years. Ever feel like the book of Judges is an autobiography of your life? “AGAIN, (insert your name) did evil in the eyes of the LORD.” What temptation did you give in to AGAIN two weeks ago? Selfishness? Gossip? Worry? Grumpiness? Impatience? Anger? Revenge? Hatred? Disrespect? Lust? Laziness? Greed? Vulgar words? Sinful Joking? Over indulging with food, drink, work, electronics, entertainment, or something else? The Lord didn’t send a foreign army to call you to repentance, but a guilty conscience, or the feeling of shame and embarrassment, or a person in your life to hold you accountable for your sin.
