Pistunina, 98125, Messina, Italy; e-mail: [email protected] *Corresponding author ABSTRACT Two alien invasive species of the genus Sceliphron Klug, 1801 (Hymenoptera Sphecidae) were recently found in Sicily: S. caementarium (Drury, 1773) is recorded from Sicily (Messina province) for the first time; S. curvatum (F. Smith, 1870), previously recorded from Sicily only through generic data from literature and only one locality in a web forum of amateurs, is confirmed as definitely established in the Island. The Regional distribution of both alien species in Italy is revised based on data taken from literature and reliable reports from web forums. A brief faunistic account on the three native Sceliphron from Sicily is provided: S. destillatorium (Illiger, 1807) and S. spirifex (Linnaeus, 1758) are both new for the Aeolian Islands (respectively reported for Panarea and Vulcano). Checklist of the Spheciform Wasps (Hymenoptera: Crabronidae & Sphecidae) of British Columbia Chris Ratzlaff Spencer Entomological Collection, Beaty Biodiversity Museum, UBC, Vancouver, BC This checklist is a modified version of: Ratzlaff, C.R. 2015. Checklist of the spheciform wasps (Hymenoptera: Crabronidae & Sphecidae) of British Columbia. Journal of the Entomological Society of British Columbia 112:19-46 (available at http://journal.entsocbc.ca/index.php/journal/article/view/894/951). Photographs for almost all species are online in the Spencer Entomological Collection gallery (http://www.biodiversity.ubc.ca/entomology/). There are nine subfamilies of spheciform wasps in recorded from British Columbia, represented by 64 genera and 280 species. The majority of these are Crabronidae, with 241 species in 55 genera and five subfamilies. Sphecidae is represented by four subfamilies, with 39 species in nine genera. The following descriptions are general summaries for each of the subfamilies and include nesting habits and provisioning information. The Subfamilies of Crabronidae Astatinae !Three genera and 16 species of astatine wasps are found in British Columbia. All species of Astata, Diploplectron, and Dryudella are groundnesting and provision their nests with heteropterans (Bohart and Menke 1976). Males of Astata and Dryudella possess holoptic eyes and are often seen perching on sticks or rocks. Bembicinae Nineteen genera and 47 species of bembicine wasps are found in British Columbia. All species are groundnesting and most prefer habitats with sand or sandy soil, hence the common name of “sand wasps”. Four genera, Bembix, Microbembex, Steniolia and Stictiella, have been recorded nesting in aggregations (Bohart and Horning, Jr. 1971; Bohart and Gillaspy 1985). -

This is the first description of an immature stage of the genus Penepodium. The larva of P. dubium is similar to those of Podi- um, but it can be distinguished from the species of this genus by the presence of depressions on the front and clypeus, and lack of brownish blotched areas on the head. The cocoon of Penepodium seems to be unique among those of Sceliphrini in bearing a nipple-like projection at one end. O'Brien l ABSTRACT Biological information and distribution maps are provided for the 26 species of thread-waisted wasps that occur in Michigan. Podium luctuosum is a new state record. Sixty percent of the eastern North America sphecine fauna is represented in Michigan. The thread-waisted wasps, or Sphecinae (sensu Bohart and Menke 1976) are conspic uous inhabitants of sandy areas, vacant lots, and human residences (mud daubers). They have long been a favorite group for ethologists and naturalists because of their large size and easily observed nesting habits. -

II.-A SYNOPSIS OF THE SPHECOIDEA OF NEBRASKA (HYMENOPTERA) BY CLARENCE E. MICKEL LINCOLN, NEBRASKA The following paper is the result of three years more or less intermittent study and collecting of the entomophilous wasps of the superfamily Sphecoidea. In 1908, Mr. H. S. Smith pub lished a list of Nebraska Sphecoidea together with synoptic tables, descriptions of new species and notes. The University of N e braska collection of this group has more than doubled in size since 1908, the collection of Nebraska specimens now numbering about 7,000, while the entire collection of Sphecoidea includes between 8,000 and 9,000 specimens. This wealth of material has naturally increased the number of species known to occur within the state and has furnished 91 species new to science. Mr. H. S. Smith's paper included 200 species of Nebraska Sphecoidea, while the collection now contains 349 species of this group taken within the state. -

The 10 painfulness of stings delivered by ants, wasps, and bees can be easily measured in the field or lab using the 11 stinging insect pain scale that rates the pain intensity from 1 to 4, with 1 being minor pain, and 4 being extreme, 12 debilitating, excruciating pain. The painfulness of stings of 96 species of stinging insects and the lethalities of 13 the venoms of 90 species was determined and utilized for pinpointing future promising directions for 14 investigating venoms having pharmaceutically active principles that could benefit humanity. The findings 15 suggest several under- or unexplored insect venoms worthy of future investigations, including: those that have 16 exceedingly painful venoms, yet with extremely low lethality – tarantula hawk wasps (Pepsis) and velvet ants 17 (Mutillidae); those that have extremely lethal venoms, yet induce very little pain – the ants, Daceton and 18 Tetraponera; and those that have venomous stings and are both painful and lethal – the ants Pogonomyrmex, 19 Paraponera, Myrmecia, Neoponera, and the social wasps Synoeca, Agelaia, and Brachygastra. -

BISHOP MUSEUM HONOLULU, HAWAII {Submitted for publication February, I960) Midway Atoll lies 1150 nautical miles northwest of Oahu and consists of a nearly circular rim of coral reef about 5 miles in diameter enclosing a lagoon. Near the southern rim of the atoll are two low islets, Sand Island measuring about a mile and one-half long by a mile wide, and Eastern Island, triangular in shape and a mile and a quarter long by three quarters of a mile wide. Though Eastern Island always has had a growth of low shrub, Sand Island was originally covered with nearly bare sand. When a cable station was established on Sand Island in 1902, numerous plants, together with shiploads of soil were imported, principally from Hawaii. Undoubtedly many insects were introduced at the same time. From 1935 to 1950, Sand Island was an operating base for Pan American Airways, and it has been a refueling base for east-bound Armed Forces transport planes. The first insect recorded from Midway was the moth, Peridroma fasciata, described in 1894 by W. Rothschild, and probably collected in July, 1891 by Henry Palmer, a bird collector for Rothschild. A few insects were taken by G. P. Wilder in 1905, but the first scientific survey of Midway was made by the Tanager Expedition in 1923, with D. T. Fullaway as entomologist, during the course of an exploration of islands of the Hawaiian chain northwest of Kauai. The entomological results were published by E. -

Five species Sceliphrini, belonging to two genera were determined.The current study recorded five types of mud dauber this tribe belonging to both sexes and as follows: Chalybion flebile,(Lepeletier) wasps, Sceliphron madraspatanum (Fabricius), Sc. arabs (Lepeletier), Sc. pietschmanni Sceliphron, (Kohl) and Sc. rectum Kohl.
