Right: Dreams became reality for the Griff on Soft ball and Baseball teams as the Griff on Spring Sports Complex was dedicated in April 2011. The complex which is located on the northeast side of campus features ample seati ng, state- of-the-art press faciliti es, scoreboards, surround sound, ample parking and professional style dugouts. It was the fi rst ti me in the 41 year history of the program that baseball was played on campus.

Above: With enrollment at an all-ti me and the demand for on-campus housing higher than ever, ground broke in late summer 2010 on Griff on Hall which will be located to the south of Scanlon Hall. Griff on Hall will feature 250 beds in apartment style units. Each apartment will have kitchen faciliti es and four private bedrooms. The hall will also feature a workout room and a community lounge. The doors to Griff on Hall are scheduled to open in Fall 2011.

The coaches will get the opportunity to be on the air live with him periodically throughout the year.

Your advisor will put you in the best positi on to graduate, as well as line up valuable applied learning and research opportuniti es. In additi on, the Western Athleti cs Department has its own compliance and academic coordinator who serves as a direct liaison between the student-athlete and academic faculty to ensure each athlete has the resources they need to succeed.

Center for Academic Support The Center for Academic Support provides one-on- one and small group tutoring for most courses on campus. Located on the northeast corner of the Hearnes Center, the center consists of group study spaces and a large open area for students to receive tutoring or work independently. The center also off ers free tutoring in math, writi ng, specifi c courses, reading and study skills. In additi on to these services, students have access to online assistance, Supplemental Instructi on, and workshops sponsored by the center.

Athleti cs Mentor Program Student-athletes that need additi onal academic support parti cipate in the athleti cs mentoring program. The program, which is facilitated through the Center for Academic Support, provides each athlete with a mentor who provides one-on-one att enti on on all facets of college life.

Gary Hazelrigg conti nues to be the Sports Medicine Coordinator for Heartland Regional Medical Center and coordinates services to Western. Hazelrigg has previous ti es to Western Athleti cs, serving as an assistant professor and head athleti c trainer for the university during the infancy of the Athleti cs Department and is a member of the MWSU Athleti cs Hall of Fame.

The city of St. Joseph is one of the best sports towns of its size in the country. In the past year alone and in additi on to Griff on Athleti cs, St., Joseph has hosted the NCAA Division II Women’s Basketball and Soft ball Nati onal Championships, The Tour of Missouri Cycling Race, The United States Tennis Associati on Heartland Classic and is the summer home of the Kansas City Chiefs Training Camp. The city is also home to the St. Joseph Mustangs, a wood bat summer college baseball team who consistently draws large crowds on a regular basis. The St. Joseph Civic Arena, shown below right during the 2010 NCAA Division II Women’s Basketball Championship is a 3,800-seat multi -purpose arena. It is used mainly to host indoor sporti ng events, such as basketball and arena football. It has hosted two American Professional Football League franchises, the St. Joseph Explorers in 2003 and the St. Joseph Storm in 2005. During the 2010-11 academic year ,Griff on student-athletes parti cipated in over 1,000 hours of community service in the local area. In additi on, Griff on Football players were involved in many endeavors including Athlete Reading Week at Skaith Elementary School, Camp Quality, The Mayors Thanksgiving Dinner and United Way Profi t in Educati on.

The MWSU Student-Athlete Advisory Committ ee takes part in several service projects throughout the year including “Griff s Giving Gift s” and “Night Out on the Griff s.”

Last season the Griffons were 12-17 overall and 8-12 in MIAA play. The eight MIAA victories was the most since the 2002 season when Western went 8-8. Frederick coached MIAA Freshman of the Year and Honorable Mention All-MIAA selection Stephanie Hattey as well as Honorable Mention All-MIAA selection Kelli Sicner.

Two seasons ago Frederick took the Griffons from a 4-32 record in 2008 to a 11-22 record in 2009. He also coached an All-MIAA Honorable Mention selection in Kelli Sicner.

Frederick was announced the 6th Head Volleyball Coach in Missouri Western history on January 30, replacing Tiffany Mastin who resigned in November of 2008. Frederick returns to Western after a very successful fi ve seasons as the Park University Pirates Men’s Volleyball Coach.

Frederick was in his fi fth season as the Head Men’s Volleyball Coach at Park University. He guided the Pirates to the 2008 NAIA Men’s Volleyball National Championship and a 29-1 overall record a season ago. Frederick sports the Pirates best all-time winning percentage in the sport of volleyball with a 108-16 overall record, .871.

In his fi rst four seasons at Park, Frederick led the Pirates to four-straight NAIA National Tour- naments, including a National Runner-Up fi nish in 2007, recording the school’s fi rst 30-win season in more than a decade and the fi rst since only varsity matches were counted toward the overall record.

Frederick served as Griffon Assistant Volleyball Coach under Cindy Brauck from 2001-2003. During that time he contributed to scouting, recruiting and practice management.

Before his stint at Western, Frederick spent a year in the high school ranks coaching the girl’s program at Fridley (Minn.) High School in 2000.

He has extensive experience working camps during the summer, including serving at the University of Minnesota and University of Stanford camps.

Frederick earned his undergraduate degree in Biology from the University of Nebraska-Lincoln in 1998, where he competed in NIRSA Division I Club Volleyball. In addition, he completed his formal certifi cation in Cytotechnology at the Mayo Clinic in Roch- ester, Minn., in 2000.

He and his wife Becky reside in Parkville, Mo., with their daughters Sarah and Sadie.

Former Griffon player Marian Broderick Carbin is in her third season and assists in all aspects of the program under Frederick, including recruiting.

Griffon Coaches A four-year letterwinner for the Griffons, Carbin played in 393 games and 116 matches in four years. She accumulated 557 kills to go along with 1,009 digs, 135 set assists and 128 services aces. She was also named to the 2005 ESPN the Magazine Academic All-America team. Carbin graduated with a bachelor’s degree in mathematics in the spring of 2007. Before coming back to Western, Carbin taught mathematics at North Kansas City High School where she also was an assistant coach for the high school team. She was the head coach of the Kansas City Extreme Volleyball Club. Her team was invited to play in the 2009 Junior Olympics National Tournament this coming month. She was also a student assistant coach for Missouri Western in 2006 and was the 2004-05 Missouri Western Volleyball Student-Athlete of the Year. Marian and her husband, former Western football player Greg Carbin reside in North Kansas City.

The relatively inexperienced squad will look Season Preview 2010 to Alex Behnke’s (6-0, Sr.) senior leader- ship. The Seymour, Wis. native brings three years experience up front for the Griffons. Behnke led the team last season with 94 blocks. In her fi rst year at Western, Justine Buskirk (6-1, Jr.) started 28 matches, and fi nished the season with 155 kills, 19 digs and 56 blocks.

The Griffons begin the season with the West Texas A&M Tournament in Canyon, Texas and the University of Nebraska- Kearney Tournament before opening MIAA play at the MWSU Fieldhouse against Fort Hays State on September 17. The Fort Hays match is one of just two at home for the Griffons in the fi rst seven weeks of the season. After an October 4 match with rival Northwest Missouri, Western will host seven MIAA matches from October 21 through No- Brooke Cousino (5-7 Fr.) looks to recover vember 8. from an injury suffered her senior year to compete for the libero/defensive special- ist spot. Dr. Robert Vartabedian began his tenure at Western on July 1, 2008.

Since coming to Western, Dr. Vartabedian has overseen the constructi on of Remington Hall that was completed in December 2009, and the renovati on of Agenstein Hall, completed in December 2010. He has taken on a campus outdoor project, including three new pond fountains, building signs and a new entrance sign. Dr. Vartabedian was also one of the campus team members to secure the Kansas City Chiefs training camp at Western, beginning in the summer of 2010. That project included the constructi on of a new Griff on Indoor Sports Complex. Western also opened a new Spring Sports Complex in the spring of 2011 and a new residence hall this fall.

Prior to joining Western Dr. Vartabedian served as vice president for academic aff airs at Eastern New Mexico Univer- sity (ENMU) in Portales, N.M. In that role, he was chief academic offi cer for a university with a total enrollment of about 9,500. He oversaw re-accreditati on eff orts in six departments. The university’s 2007 evaluati on by the Higher Learning Commission/North Central Associati on was accepted without any defi ciencies and was showcased as a model applicati on.

Dr. Vartabedian was dean of the College of Arts and Sciences at Western Carolina University in Cullowhee, N.C. from 1999 to 2005, serving eight months as interim vice chancellor for academic aff airs in 2004. As dean, he oversaw 14 academic departments and four centers. As interim vice chancellor, he was the chief administrator for all academic programs for the 8,400 students enrolled.

Both ENMU and Western Carolina created several new academic programs under Dr. Vartabedian’s leadership. He oversaw building renovati on projects at ENMU for science, technology and music and fi ve major building projects at Western Carolina totaling $60 million, including a $30 million Fine and Performing Arts Center.

Dr. Vartabedian graduated magna cum laude with a bachelor of arts in speech communicati on from California State University, Fresno, Calif., in 1974. He re- ceived a master of arts in speech communicati on from Wichita State University, and a doctorate in communicati on from the University of Oklahoma. He and his wife, Dr. Laurel Vartabedian, have two children: Rob, and daughter-in-law, Audrey, of Amarillo, Texas, and Sarah, of Austi n, Texas; and one grandson.

Interim Athletics Director Dan Nicoson

Dan Nicoson became Western’s Vice President for University Advancement in July 2004. He is respon- sible for the offi ces of Development, Alumni Services, Public Relati ons and Marketi ng, and Campus Printi ng and Design Services. He is also the Executi ve Director of the MWSU Foundati on.

Nicoson coordinated the inaugurati on ceremonies and events when Western’s president, Dr. Robert Vartabedian, arrived in 2008. He also played a key role in working with the Kansas City Chiefs for their summer training camp on campus. Nicoson also coordinated Western’s more than $17 million capital campaign, Achieving Greatness. Nicoson served as interim athleti c director in 2010 for a short ti me and took on the role again in June 2011.

He received a bachelor’s degree in secondary educati on from the University of Indianapolis and his master’s degree in secondary educati on from Indiana State University. Nicoson is a Certi fi ed Fundraising Executi ve and has taught as an adjunct faculty member for the Indiana University Center on Philan- thropy since 1982.

Prior to joining Western, Nicoson had been the President of Vincennes University Foundati on in Vincennes, Ind., since 1990. Prior to that he was Assistant to the President for Advancement at Marian College in Indianapolis. Nicoson also served as the Director of Development at the University of Indianapolis.

His background in athleti cs began at birth. His father, Angus Nicoson, was a highly honored college athleti c director and basketball coach. Dan played football and baseball at the University of Indianapolis where he later served as an assistant football coach. Aft er leaving coach- ing he served brief periods as their Sports Informati on Director and then as a radio play-by-play announcer for football broadcasts. His son, Scott , played collegiate baseball and his other son, Brent, played collegiate baseball and golf. Brent is now the golf coach at the University of Indianapolis, representi ng the third generati on of Nicosons to coach at the university. Dan and his wife, Linda, have three sons and three grandchildren, all of whom reside in Indianapolis. She began her career at Western in the fall of 1990 Relati ons and his 12th year on the Griff on staff . Esely’s responsibiliti es as a student-athlete in the sport of tennis. Smith graduated cum laude with include overseeing the Sports Informati on Offi ce and media relati ons, a BSBA in accounti ng in 1995. marketi ng, adverti sing, public relati ons, event management, ti cketi ng and being the liaison to the Gold Coat Club for current and prospecti ve In 1994, Smith became the Head Women’s Tennis Coach and coached the members. For the fi ft h consecuti ve year, Esely will be a part of the Griff on fi rst-ever tennis team to the NCAA Tournament in 1998. That same year, Radio Broadcast team, serving as the sideline reporter for Griff on football she became the fi rst Athleti cs Business Manager at Western. Since that and appearing on the pre-and-post game shows and will serve as the play- ti me, she has served in the roles of Compliance and Academics, Director of by-play voice for away women’s basketball broadcasts and color analyst on Finance, Assistant Athleti cs Director and her current role as Associate AD/SWA. men’s basketball broadcasts on 680 KFEQ.

Smith has served on the NCAA Regional Advisory Committ ee for tennis and the NCAA Regional Esely recently completed a four-year term as a member of the NCAA Division II Men’s Golf Nati onal Advisory Committ ee for women’s basketball. She is the liaison for the AD/SWA Committ ee to the volleyball coaches, a member of the MIAA Budget Committ ee, the chair of the MIAA Committ ee and served as the chair for the 2010-2011 academic year. In additi on to his day-to-day Championships & Offi ciati ng Committ ee and vice chair of the MIAA Insti tuti onal Representati ve duti es, Esely served as the Tournament Director for the 2010 & 2011 NCAA Women’s Basketball Council. and Soft ball Championships hosted by MWSU and will serve as the outside operati ons manager for this year’s Kansas City Chiefs summer training camp. Sports Information Director Esely holds a bachelor’s degree from Western in sports marketi ng/management and received his master’s degree in sports marketi ng/management from the United States Sports Academy. Trevor Berneking enters his fourth year as Western’s Sports Informati on Director aft er serving as a graduate assistant at Northern State University Esely and his wife, Kate, reside in St. Joseph, Mo. with their son, Dax. in Aberdeen, SD. Trevor is originally from Grand Marais, Minn., where he graduated from Cook County High School in 2000. Berneking played football at the Univeristy of Minnesota, Crookston, for four years where he was a two-year captain and an NSIC All-Conference Eric Kramer selecti on as a defensive lineman.
