Alex and Marie Shipman Director of Men’s Golf 4th Season • Cal, 2001

Walter Chun finished his fourth season as Cal’s Alex and Marie Shipman Director of Men’s Golf and his 23rd campaign associated with the school’s men’s golf program in 2019-20. Chun was elevated to his current role on Aug. 1, 2016, after having spent seven seasons as Cal’s associate head coach (2009-16), five as an assistant coach (2004-09) and two as an administrative assistant (2002-04) following a five-year playing career for the Golden Bears (1997-2002). In a season cut short by the coronavirus, Chun’s team put together many highlights including four top-5 team finishes: the Golden Bears placed second at the MacKenzie Invitational, fourth at the Southwestern Invitational and fifth at both the Tav- istock and Lamkin San Diego Classic. Meanwhile, junior Finigan Tilly placed in the top five in back-to-back tournaments and had three top-20 finishes overall. Chun took his first team to the NCAA Championships in his current role in 2019 and participated in his eighth NCAA’s over- all. The Golden Bears finished 10th overall in their first appear- ance at the NCAA’s since 2016 for their highest finish since Chun was the associate head coach for a pair of teams that reached the semifinals of match play at the 2012 and 2013 NCAA’s. Cal, who was ranked as high as No. 6 by / Sagarin in the spring of 2019, won a pair of events in 2018-19 at the Ka’anapali Classic Collegiate Invitational to close the fall schedule and The Farms Invitational to open the spring. In addi- tion, Cal won the inaugural Big Match against Stanford. Chun was named the Pac-12 Coach of the Year in his sec- ond season at the helm in 2017-18 after the Bears were among the nation’s top 10 for most of the campaign. Cal won for the first three times under Chun in 2017-18 includ- ing a signature victory against one of the top fields in the nation at the Tavistock Collegiate Invitational after finishing last at the event in Chun’s first campaign in 2016-17. Cal was also a winner at the Alister MacKenzie Invitational and Wyoming Desert Intercollegiate before finishing the regular season with three consecutive second-place showings at the Querencia Cabo Collegiate, The Goodwin and the Western In- tercollegiate. Cal was fifth at the Pac-12 Championships be- fore a disappointing 10th-place showing at the NCAA Raleigh Regional kept the Bears out of the NCAA Championships. Cal still ranked as high as No. 9 (Golfweek/Sagarin) and No. 12 (Golfstat) in the final national polls. Prior to taking over the lead position in the program, Chun helped the Bears to new heights during his seven seasons as Chun began his affiliation with Cal in 1997 as a men’s golf the program’s associate head coach with Cal reaching the NCAA student-athlete and was a two-time team captain while com- Championships in six of those campaigns after a previous five-year peting on three occasions at the NCAA West Regionals (2000- absence. CAL GOLF SORGAE FACILI

The California men’s and women’s golf programs have an exclusive short-game facility at the Metropolitan Golf Links in Oakland. The lead donors that brought the $600,000 project to fruition were Ed and Mollie Arnold, Ellen and Joffa Dale, Jay deBenedetti, Lon and Becci Haskew, Judy Isaac, and Pat and Kent Newmark. The two-and-a-half acre state-of-the-art short-game facility opened in 2007 after breaking ground the previous year following a long planning process. It is conveniently located on the southwest corner of the Metropolitan Golf Links near the Oakland International Airport, approximately 15 minutes from campus. Built to USGA specifi cations, the facility features two extremely large greens – one for putting and chipping, and the other for the aerial game, including pitching and bunker play.
