Track Listing 1. Blood Seeress (12:36) 2. Transylvanian Incantations BAND: MONARCH! RELEASE: OMENS FORMAT: CD - DIGIPACK RELEASE NUMBER: AAL039-CD LABEL: AT A LOSS RECORDINGS RELEASE DATE:FEB 28TH PRESS: EARSPLIT PR GENRE: METAL RIYL : Sunn 0)))), Khanate, Moss Gone midnight and it's most definitely witching hour in the Boxxed space. Specifically, Burning Witch hour. In much the same way that half the journalistic reactions to Rolo Tomassi involve combinations of the words 'surprising', 'growl' and 'for a girl', it would be easy to reduce French doom royalty Monarch to a lazy caricature. Except this evening the hellish tones flying from their doubled over leader Emilie – aka Eurogirl (got to love Track Listing the Turbonegro nod) – are equal to any troubled soul abusing a mic in 2011. The set's brevity only adds to its impact, Emilie crashing us back to reality after a truly cacopho- nous conclusion by thanking everybody for coming in the sweetest Gallic trill you've 1. Blood Seeress ever heard. Mighty, and mighty well mannered with it.(Supersonic Festival Review) - (12:36) THE QUIETUS 2. Transylvanian Incantations Omens is MONARCH’s sixth full-length release of atmospheric dirge / drone since (3:40) their 2005 inception, not to mention the myriad of other releases within that amount of time including three EPs, three split releases (Elysium, Moss and Grey Daturas) and more, under the banners of Crucial Blast, Throne Records, 20 Buck Spin, 3. Black Becomes the Sun Heathen Skulls and other indie labels! (19:09) Omens was recorded over a period of four months in four different countries (Osaka, Japan by Hironori Ochi @ Kakurega | Melbourne, Australia by Neil Thomason @ Head Gap | Montreal, Canada by Matt Cartman @ Crane Studio | Chicago, IL by Sanford Parker @ Engine Studios). The latest recordings also features newest member Rob Schaeffer (Dark Castle, YOB live, etc.) along with guitarist Shiran Kaïdine (Year of No Light), bassist MicHell Bidegain, and of course the ethereal, penetrating vocals of Emilie Bresson. Guest musicians Atsuchi Sano (Birushanah), Yailen Munoz (Ensorcelor), Eric Quach (Thisquietarmy), Jeanne Peluard (The Sparteens) and Robert MacManus (ex Grey Daturas / ex Monarch) make appearances. Thirty Four minutes of drone and eerie moans building to lurching drums and strings accented by harsh screams ending with haunting vocals & drones. A 3 minute Lustmordian interlude punctuated with dire howls. Funeral dirge builds adding juxtapositional angelic tones. Ugly drone, dark whispers, screeches erratic yells and then slowly ends as it begun! 1) Press by Earsplit PR (Earth, Sunn O)), Neurosis, Ministry etc...) 2) First CD pressing limited to 1,000 copies - 6 panel wallet w/ spot UV varnish. 3) Mastered by Collin Jordan @ The Boiler Room (Twilight, Ministry, Yob) 4) Constantly touring worldwide!!! • Notes from the Underground: a Cultural, Political, and Aesthetic Mapping of Underground Music
Notes From The Underground: A Cultural, Political, and Aesthetic Mapping of Underground Music. Stephen Graham Goldsmiths College, University of London PhD 1 I declare that the work presented in this thesis is my own. Signed: …………………………………………………. Date:…………………………………………………….. 2 Abstract The term ‗underground music‘, in my account, connects various forms of music-making that exist largely outside ‗mainstream‘ cultural discourse, such as Drone Metal, Free Improvisation, Power Electronics, and DIY Noise, amongst others. Its connotations of concealment and obscurity indicate what I argue to be the music‘s central tenets of cultural reclusion, political independence, and aesthetic experiment. In response to a lack of scholarly discussion of this music, my thesis provides a cultural, political, and aesthetic mapping of the underground, whose existence as a coherent entity is being both argued for and ‗mapped‘ here. Outlining the historical context, but focusing on the underground in the digital age, I use a wide range of interdisciplinary research methodologies , including primary interviews, musical analysis, and a critical engagement with various pertinent theoretical sources. In my account, the underground emerges as a marginal, ‗antermediated‘ cultural ‗scene‘ based both on the web and in large urban centres, the latter of whose concentration of resources facilitates the growth of various localised underground scenes. I explore the radical anti-capitalist politics of many underground figures, whilst also examining their financial ties to big business and the state(s). This contradiction is critically explored, with three conclusions being drawn. First, the underground is shown in Part II to be so marginal as to escape, in effect, post- Fordist capitalist subsumption.

  • Sunn O))) Was Formed in 1998 by Stephen O'malley and Greg
Sunn O))) was formed in 1998 by Stephen O’Malley and Greg Anderson. They were initially based in Seattle, shortly before moving to Los Angeles, and O'Malley now resides in Paris. The band have become known for their very recognisable “drone metal” sound, and extremely loud live performances. Widely considered pioneering, their music can be described as very slow, with distorted guitars, and an emphasis on texture rather than rhythm. Their name, pronounced "sun", is a reference to the Sunn amplifier brand, and their logo is that of the amplifier’s too. Over their seven solo studio albums and scores of EPs, live albums and other releases, Sunn O))) have collaborated and recorded with artists across the globe, including Scott Walker, Attila Csihar (Mayhem), Kim Thayil (Soundgarden), Japan’s Boris, Norway’s Ulver, Nurse With Wound, Petra Hayden, Julian Cope (The Teardrop Explodes), John Wiese, Oren Ambarchi, Malefic, Julian Priester, Eyvind Kang, Dylan Carlson, Stuart Dempster, and many more. Their early releases were met with acclaim across various underground music scenes, and steadily their profile has risen, becoming something of a household name in the alternative music, and arts worlds. The band have played across the world at many prestigious festivals and venues, in the past year at David Byrne’s Meltdown at the Southbank Centre in London, and curating a four day program at Le Guess Who? Festival in Utrecht. Other notable appearances include Barcelona’s Sonar (2009), Krakow’s Unsound (2009), CTM Berlin (2013), Japan’s Earthdom (2007) and Leave Them All Behind (2012), North Carolina’s Hopscotch (2012), Australia’s Totally Huge New Music Festival (2007) and All Tomorrow’s Parties/The Nightmare Before Christmas (2003, 2004, 2007 and 2009) and Supersonic (2007 and 2009) in the UK.

Jon Spencer Blues Explosion's influence (loud and sloppy garage-blues) was still felt throughout the country, as proven by the Immortal Lee County Killers in Alabama with The Essential Fuck-Up Blues (2001); the Black Keys in Ohio with The Big Come Up (2002); and by the Kills in Florida, playing the version popularized by the White Stripes on No Wow (2005). The Fiery Furnaces (4), formed by Matthew Friedberger and Eleanor Friedberger, siblings from Chicago who relocated to New York, exhibited a versatile and multi-faceted style on Gallowsbird's Bark (2003). Anti- crooning vocals and spiked guitar riffs as well as wildly unstable dynamics evoked the Rolling Stones at their most drunken/deranged, or Captain Beefheart's Magic Band fronted by Janis Joplin. At the same time the exuberant neglect of their arrangements was reminiscent of Pere Ubu. Blueberry Boat (2004) stretched out into longer and more ambitious songs, collages of genres and tours de force of arrangement (including electronic keyboards) that were meant to create a new form of musical theater. That form came to life on Rehearsing My Choir (2005), a work structured as a dialogue between an older woman and a younger one over a substratum of eccentric and cacophonous sounds.

• Why Collect Heavy Metal?
COLLECTING HEAVY METAL MUSIC BY KARSON JONES THE ROYAL CONSERVATORY WHY COLLECT HEAVY METAL? Heavy Metal, more than most forms of popular music, has endured scathing criticism from all sides. Music critics, politicians, and parent groups have all decried the musical degeneracy1 and moral decrepitude2 of the genre. In the face of this, however, metal has simply become more popular and more extreme in its sound, imagery, and values. Heavy metal music and culture has, for most of its existence, fallen very much outside the mainstream and in many ways defines itself as anti-establishment. Many might ask whether this music, being so frequently derided, is worthy of academic study and whether libraries should be adding it to their collections. The fact is that, regardless of how one feels about the music and culture of heavy metal, an increasing amount of social scientific and musicological research is being done on the subject. There is also evidence that heavy metal is increasingly being included in post-secondary curricula.3 Research collections and archives are needed to support this study and teaching. These collections need to contain not only the academic literature and the seminal sound recordings, but also the visual art, fashion, and other ephemera that are inseparable from the metal experience. At various institutions, one will find substantial collections dedicated to other marginal genres and subgenres of music, national musics, and even individual bands or performers, yet metal has been, for the most part, ignored so far.4 There is a dearth of library literature on this topic. In 2002, Robert Freeborn performed a search in Library Literature for the keywords heavy metal and retrieved four results, only one of which was in English.

  • Questions of Genre in Drone Metal Owen Coggins Abstract
“Record Store Guy’s Head Explodes and the Critic is Speechless!” Questions of Genre in Drone Metal Owen Coggins Abstract This article examines questions of genre in the translocal and marginal music culture of drone metal, a radically slow and extended form of metal founded on extremes of amplification, distortion and repetition. I examine the tentative formation of genre in connections forged between musicians and between recordings, establishing sonic and symbolic conventions. I note the deliberate associations with bands (notably Black Sabbath) which situated this music as metal. I then turn to the role of listener discourse in constituting genre, attending to listeners’ experience of and communication about the key terms ‘drone’ and ‘metal’. After noting the importance of vagueness and ambiguity in genre designations, particularly in drone metal’s translocal marginality, I show that relevant genre characteristics for listeners include not just musical sounds, but also affective, experiential, embodied and conscious subjective states. Finally, I suggest that treating genre as a constellation of points, viewed in different but related ways from different standpoints, is particularly useful in understanding drone metal as a loosely constituted genre with fragmented, disparate and intermittently connected audiences. Introduction The ‘questions of genre in drone metal’ in the title of this article immediately betray a tension, in implying that drone metal is already a thing that can be coherently discussed, even if genre is to then be questioned. Genre relates to issues of origins (Brown, 2015), and is always a matter of ongoing contestation and negotiation of boundaries which include and exclude (Frith, 1 1996, p.
