89 North 17th Avenue, Beech Grove, Indiana 46107 317.784.5454 FAX 317.784.1834 www.holyname.cc Dear Members of the Holy Name Family: Thank you for your commitment to Holy Name of Jesus Parish, and please know that this Resource Book and Directory provides important information on the many parish ministries that help each of us to advance the message of the Gospel as we seek the path to salvation. As a parish – we need the gifts of each member in order for the Body of Christ to be ever, more fully present here in Beech Grove, and throughout this world we inhabit. This book provides so many opportunities for each of us to discover the various ways we may contribute to making Christ present in the parish and in the world. In a special way, I would like to thank the businesses and organizations that have advertised in this booklet; their contributions have made this publication possible – and I encourage you to support them with your business. As Pastor, I have come to love the Holy Name Parish Family very much. While I am still learning as I begin my second year, I am fi lled with gratitude for the many gifted people I have encountered here at Holy Name. I also want to extend a warm welcome to the families that have joined us this year as new members of the Holy Name family. I have certainly found Holy Name to be an incredibly welcoming and Christ-centered parish, and I consider myself very fortunate to serve Christ and the Holy Name of Jesus Parish along with you. Know that you are in my prayers each day, Sincerely in the Holy Name of Jesus,

Fr. Bob Robeson Pastor

Theology Thursdays Theology Thursdays is a speaker series conducted by the pastor that focuses on topics of faith and teachings that directly aff ect our lives. This is an evening of faith and fellowship. Light appetizers are provided. Faith Formation Middle School Youth Ministry Middle school youth ministry is for all middle school youth of our parish, grades 6th-8th. Through this ministry, our youth meet once a month on Sunday evenings for fellowship. Our goal is to give our middle school youth an opportunity to come together with their peers, share faith and have a good time. Another important aspect of middle school youth ministry is the element of service. One Saturday per month, the group meets at a determined location for a service project. In this way our youth not only enjoy gathering together for a good time, they also enjoy the opportunity to be the hands and feet of Christ in the world and build their own sense of Holy Name Community. High School Youth Ministry TOTUS TUUS This is our high school ministry group. At Totus Tuus, we have gone to youth conferences, done service projects, gone on trips to Holiday World and St. Meinrad, but mostly we have a lot of fun. We meet once a week in our lounge. We have couches, TV, air hockey and other games in our lounge. We always start our night with an activity. We have played volleyball, ultimate frisbee, basketball, head ball and more. We will then tackle a topic important for our high school kids’ development. Why do we believe what we do? There have been some great discussions. We would love for more of our high school youth to participate in this group! If you have any questions, please contact Jamin Wernke at [email protected]. Religious Education Pre-K through 7th Grade Faith formation is a lifelong process, and through religious education classes, we provide formal catechesis for children 4 years old through 7th grade. Guidelines for this formation are developed under the guidance of the Archdiocese of Indianapolis. Through this formation, the parish can work in partnership with parents to assist with the development of your children’s Catholic faith, prayer life, sacraments and tradition. We off er religious education classes for children, ages 4 through 7th grade, of our parish. Classes begin in late summer and conclude near the beginning of May. The archdiocese requires our parish to provide at least 30 hours of formal religious education to our students. Classes are held on Sunday mornings from 10:35am to 11:25am and take place in the school classrooms. Registration for your child is required.

RCIA - Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults RCIA is primarily for those who have not been baptized; however, all those seeking to enter the Catholic Church are welcome and invited to attend. RCIA is a process of conversion in which participants prepare to follow Christ through the Catholic Church. During this time, participants pray, refl ect and study the teachings of the Catholic Church in order to prepare to receive the Sacraments of Initiation (Baptism, Confi rmation and First Eucharist) or to make a profession of faith (in the case of those already baptized in another Christian tradition). RCIA begins in the late summer and concludes a few weeks after Easter. Sponsors who are in full communion with the Church are needed. RCIA Adapted for Children RCIA adapted for children is designed for those who have reached the age of discretion (usually 7 years of age) and who have not received the Sacraments of Initiation. Children in RCIA prepare to receive these sacraments and for reception into the Roman Catholic Church at the Easter Vigil. Classes begin in late summer and conclude a few weeks after Easter. We will focus on the sacraments, faith community, service, prayer and basic beliefs and practices during specifi ed class times. All children who are ready will receive Baptism, Confi rmation and First Eucharist at the Easter Vigil. Vacation Bible School - VBS Vacation Bible School is a week-long ministry held in the month of June. Through this ministry we teach age-appropriate Catholic principles and scripture through fun activities and faith-fi lled learning. The children rotate through daily stations which include drama, arts and crafts, snack, games, and music. Family Life & Social Concerns Ministries Gabriel Project This ministry serves the needs of soon-to-be mothers experiencing a diffi cult time during pregnancy, especially in the area of material needs. This pro-life ministry seeks to promote a Culture of Life by generously loving and supporting women that otherwise may be pressured into having an abortion. Mercy Meals This ministry helps ease family and friends through the loss of a loved one by serving a meal in Hartman Hall or the Parish Life Center Conference Room following the funeral liturgy and cemetery interment. Several parish volunteers are needed to prepare the food for the meal. Additional help is always welcome.

10 Holy Name Parish Resource Book & Directory Over 50s Group All parishioners over 50 years of age are welcome and invited to attend Mass and lunch the fi rst Tuesday of every month. St. Vincent de Paul Society (SVdP) SVdP helps those in need by providing emergency food, clothes, and household items to people in our parish and surrounding areas. This ministry requests donations through announcements in the bulletin (Blanket Sunday, canned food drives, “The Giving Tree,” etc.). In addition to donations, volunteers are needed every third Saturday at the food pantry in Indianapolis from 7:30am-12:30pm, and about every six weeks on Saturday mornings at the distribution center. Meetings are the second Monday of the month at 7:00pm in the Franciscan Room. Volunteers are always greatly appreciated! Follow SVdP on Facebook (Holy Name of Jesus St. Vincent de Paul Society) and on Twitter (Holy Name SVdP). Liturgical Ministries Altar Servers Altar Servers play a very important role at Mass – they have the privilege of serving Christ through the priest at the altar. Therefore, all altar servers and their parents need to take this important work of the Church with serious dedication and respect. New servers will be trained no more than twice during the year and dates will be posted in the bulletin. Many servers may be asked to serve high solemn Masses such as Christmas and Easter, and during the Easter Triduum, as well as other major solemnities an addition to Sundays; additionally servers may be asked to help at wedding Masses and funeral Masses; cooperation in scheduling is needed and appreciated. Altar servers may begin in the 5th grade and are highly encouraged to continue through high school and beyond.

11 Holy Name Parish Resource Book & Directory Extraordinary Ministers of Holy Communion (EMHC) EMHC administer the Blessed Sacrament of Holy Communion. These ministers are commissioned through the Archdiocese of Indianapolis by the Archbishop. EMHC’s must be baptized and confi rmed Catholics in good standing with the Church. They must be active and supportive parishioners of the parish. We are in need of Eucharistic Ministers during Masses as well as to administer the Sacrament to parishioners that are homebound or in a nursing home. Time commitments vary from a few hours weekly to once or twice a month. Gift Bearers Presenting the gifts is a great way for families of all ages to be a special part of the Mass. Holy Name invites all parishioners who are interested in bringing up the gifts to let one of the ushers know of your interest before Mass begins. The ushers will let you know if the opportunity is available. Three or more people are needed per Mass. Lectors Members of this ministry proclaim God’s Word to the faith community assembled at Mass. Lectors assist the priest during Mass by reading the fi rst reading, second reading, and the intercessions. Lectors should be able to read with a strong, clear voice in front of a large group. They typically read at one Mass per month. Liturgy Committee This committee serves the parish by coordinating diff erent ministries that enhance the Mass and involve lay ministers such as Extraordinary Ministers of Holy Communion for Mass and the homebound, Ushers/ Hospitality, Lectors, Gift Bearers, and Altar Servers. Sacristans Sacristans provide assistance to the priest in preparation for Mass, funerals, weddings, and special events. It is a special privilege to support our priest in this ministry. The ministry is in need of a few volunteers willing to assist in these preparations. Ushers This ministry works in groups of four, assisting at Mass by greeting people, taking up collections, and distributing bulletins. Ushering is an important ministry and a great way to meet other parishioners and to be a part of the Eucharistic celebration. Additional volunteers are welcome for this ministry.
