Welcome to St. Maria Goretti on this Feast of the Baptism of our Lord! Today we come to the end of our Christmas season with the celebration of Jesus’s Baptism in the Jordan River by His cousin, St. John the Baptist. Today’s Feast is very deliberate in its intention of making all of us think about our own Baptism and our commitment to the Christ, Who came into our world for the salvation of our souls. As the lights and the trees come down and the poinsettia go away, what remains as we go into Ordinary Time is our relationship with the Word Incarnate, Jesus, Who came down into our world to be the Way, the Truth, and the Life for each of us! We do welcome all of our guests and visitors who join us for Masses this weekend. It is great to pray with you at the Holy Sacrifice of the Mass! I would like to thank everyone who attended yesterday’s Lay Leadership Workshop and all who helped put it on. These days ALL of us are called to be real leaders in the Church! It was great to reflect on how we might be able to work together to better make that happen in 2019! I thank Dr. Jason Winkle for his willingness to come and help us reflect on our leadership and example. This is a most exciting area for the Church at this time, and I am sure that we are going to hear much, much more about Lay Leadership in the next few years. Hopefully, yesterday was just the beginning of our discussion of this important area. It may be the middle of January, and typically, this is a pretty quiet time on most parish schedules, but we’ve got a lot going on and a lot of great things coming up that need our attention right now. We are very excited about our first-ever Parish Mission trip to Guatemala this coming May. Details continue to be worked out, and final opportunities to sign up are quickly approaching. For more information about the 2019 Guatemalan Mission trip, please contact Jim Mramor or Luke Klink, both of whose numbers are listed under the Parish Council list in this bulletin (page 7). Did you also know that our high school folks in TRUTH are also sponsoring a Summer Mission Trip for our high school students? The Catholic Heart Work Camp will send our high school students to work in Nashville, Tennessee. Like the Guatemalan trip, the deadline for signing up is quickly approaching! For more information about the TRUTH Summer Mission Trip, please contact Janet Thompson, Youth Minister, [email protected]. We are also coming up on the deadline for registrations for next month’s Destination Jesus youth retreat. Destination Jesus 2019 is scheduled for February 15–17 at Guerin Catholic High School. Each parish purchases only so many “spots” for this most popular youth retreat weekend, and those “spots” allotted for St. Maria Goretti are going quickly. The deadline for reserving your place at Destination Jesus 2019 is next weekend, January 20! We need all our high school folks to get their registrations in this week. Don’t miss out on this year’s Destination Jesus! This weekend we are also getting our first opportunity to sign up for our 2019 Guess Who’s Coming to Dinner event, which will take place on Saturday evening, January 26. Sponsored by our Parish Council, Guess Who’s Coming to Dinner is a great way to get to know some new friends here at the Parish and to reconnect with old friends. Please consider coming and joining us for this year’s event! We would love to have you involved, and specifically with this event, the more we have attend, the more fun it is for all involved! Please see the Parish Council representatives after all Masses this weekend. There is a LOT going on! We are blessed! Let us work together to continue to build the Kingdom of God!     A new era of group endeavours * DR. GUZMAN M. CARRIQUIRY LECOUR About 20 years ago, His Holiness John Paul II indicated in the post-synodal exhortation Christifideles Laici, the emergence of a “new era of group endeavours” in the universal Church, where “alongside the traditional forming of associations, and at times coming from their very roots, movements and new sodalities have sprouted”1, as a sign of the “richness and the versatility of resources that the Holy Spirit nourishes in the ecclesial community”2 and the laity’s capacity for generosity and initiative. In fact, Divine Providence enriched the life of the Church with the blossoming of many charisms, which were the source of these new movements and ecclesial communities, according to their diverse educational methods, forms of community and missionary momentum. His Holiness John Paul II saw in them “one of the most significant fruits of that springtime in the Church which was foretold by the Second Vatican Council, but unfortunately has often been hampered by the spread of secularization”3, a cause for hope for the Church and mankind. In fact, both His Holiness John Paul II and His Holiness Benedict XVI consider these new ecclesial realities to be “providential”, that is, signs of the fruits of God’s designs for this historic time. Therefore, both Popes, welcomed, praised, recognised and encouraged these new movements and communities, convinced that they– and both Popes have reiterated this – “represent a secure newness, which is still waiting to be properly understood in light of its positive efficacy for the Kingdom of God at work in the present moment of history”.4 The bishops of the great continent of Asia have known how to gather and welcome this newness, in communion with the teaching of the recent Popes.

    YOUNG VOICES ON CLIMATE JUSTICE THE EUROPEAN YOUTH & CLIMATE JUSTICE REPORT 2020, PRESENTED BY GENERATION CLIMATE EUROPE EXECUTIVE SUMMARY For this report we have collected the opinions and ideas of young people on climate justice from across Europe. They hail from highly diverse backgrounds. Some live in their home countries. Some have left to live abroad. They are pupils and students, apprentices and young professionals. Some are active in youth organizations, some are out in the streets supporting the climate strikes, while others do not belong to any particular movement or organisation. Some are active at their university, some in a union, some at their local parish and some in environmental NGOs. Yet, they all are united by their vision of a sustainable and just Europe. Our consultations indicate that young people are guided by values like responsibility, solidarity and community. Young people in Europe fear the consequences of the climate crisis and are concerned by the current lack of ambition and the missing sense of urgency. At the same time, Europe’s youth thinks big and wants us all to act together to solve the climate crisis, with everybody doing their fair share. This young generation has a particular sensitivity for questions of social justice. The respondents to our consultation, thus, recognized a series of barriers hindering a transition to a sustainable society and an economy that is comprehensive, fast and just at the same time. For many young people it is difficult to live a green and just life. The European Union and its member states need to provide the necessary conditions making a sustainable as well as high- quality diet, clothing, mobility, energy supply and housing available and accessible to all, regardless of their socio-economic background.
