The main body outlines the research de- sign and key findings of the study to illustrate how men and women experience the city differently. The themes address public urban life in relation to entertainment, safety, reputation, accessibility, mobility, comfort and discomfort, privacy, facili- ties, gender separation, and young single men. Af- ter, more practical guidelines are presented as food for thought for the design of more gender-inclu- sive public spaces in Amman. These come with a question pool as well as an ethnographic guide for further independent research. Combined, they are directed to urban practitioners and urban scholars to ensure that a gender lens can be applied to a va- riety of public space projects. Finally, this report is accompanied by a fairly extensive analysis of five case studies, presented as urban ethnographies. My aunts’s accounts of the late sixties and early seventies reflect that they owned and shared their right in the streets of Amman. Pioneer donor-driven projects tackling open space in the heart of our cities and in Amman did not consider seriously the social construct, including gender, and proceeded to look at the need for pu- blic space primarily to accommodate tourists or visitors. Societies were summed up rather as a be- neficiary to an economical asset or lucky dwellers of a physically facelifted open network, with no clear accountability to their cultural, societal nor gender needs. I strongly believe that the topic of gender and space needs to be tackled within a holi- stic social construct that allows for the minorities, youth, and diverse groups to coexist, and any pro- posal needs to respond to their diverse, complex, common, and conflicting needs or rights. I hope that with more research and knowledge the term gender/planning/space does not adopt only a limited viewpoint but approaches space planning - creating or recreating of new or old open pub- lic spaces - with further acknowledgment to our local and cultural context so that it moves from a critique of gender to a more constructive contri- bution. 8 9 FOREWORD BY DR. Thus, further research is constantly in demand to inves- tigate such contexts in order to inform the ‘univer- sal’ understanding for the concept of public space. Similarly, considering gender is a socially const- ructed phenomenon and as male and female users experience public spaces differently, it has been long discussed that the physical and non-physical attributes of public space may contribute to the creation of safer and more inclusive environments and making the shift from ‘gendered’ to ‘just’ spa- ces.     Honour Killing in Sindh Men's and Women's Divergent Accounts Shahnaz Begum Laghari PhD University of York Women’s Studies March 2016 Abstract The aim of this project is to investigate the phenomenon of honour-related violence, the most extreme form of which is honour killing. The research was conducted in Sindh (one of the four provinces of Pakistan). The main research question is, ‘Are these killings for honour?’ This study was inspired by a need to investigate whether the practice of honour killing in Sindh is still guided by the norm of honour or whether other elements have come to the fore. It is comprised of the experiences of those involved in honour killings through informal, semi- structured, open-ended, in-depth interviews, conducted under the framework of the qualitative method. The aim of my thesis is to apply a feminist perspective in interpreting the data to explore the tradition of honour killing and to let the versions of the affected people be heard. In my research, the women who are accused as karis, having very little redress, are uncertain about their lives; they speak and reveal the motives behind the allegations and killings in the name of honour. The male killers, whom I met inside and outside the jails, justify their act of killing in the name of honour, culture, tradition and religion. Drawing upon interviews with thirteen women and thirteen men, I explore and interpret the data to reveal their childhood, educational, financial and social conditions and the impacts of these on their lives, thoughts and actions.

I am deeply concerned about the house renovation projects, which, to my understanding, are essentially getting rid of private common rooms (replacing with "public" common rooms). In doing so, the university is naively and unrealistically not giving students ways to engage in social behaviors that college students will undeniably do. This also increases the demand and power of final clubs and other organizations that have great social spaces (pudding institute, lampoon, crimson, etc), which will exacerbate many of the negative social pressures that exist on campus (dynamics between final club students and others, gender-related issues - especially sexual assault, etc). The point is, Harvard needs to be mature about and accept the fact that college students engage in various social behaviors and thus do things to help students do these things in a safer and more accessible way. Pretending like they don't exist simply makes the situation worse and students have a much worse experience as a result. 2013-2014 Senior Male 1) I think there is a strong need for more final club/fraternity-type opportunities for undergraduate students. De ticketverkoop ging ontzettend had vorig jaar. 5 Uitverkochte concerten zijn een knap resultaat en dat terwijl Turner de laatste jaren nauwelijks nieuwe nummers heeft uitgebracht. Hoeveel lokale kopieën van Turner moeten er niet op deze wereldbol rondlopen vraag ik me soms af. Onze eigenste Natalia wordt wel eens de Vlaamse Turner genoemd. Wel, we hebben haar al heel wat soloconcerten zien geven. Conclusie: in vergelijking met Turner is ze klein bier. De promoboys en-girls samen met enkele collega journalisten verzoeken we dan ook vriendelijk elke vergelijking vanaf nu te staken. Hoge veiligheidsvoorschriften in het Sportpaleis. Een zittend middenplein, voor de eerste rijen werd een rood lint gespannen. Het soort lint dat je op luchthavens vindt. Daarachter stond of zat en leger veiligheidsmensen. Ook in de zaal zelf zaten er een aantal of wandelden die rond. Zelfs rond de volgspotters op het balkon stond steevast veiligheidspersoneel. Op de tram hoorde ik enkele West-Vlamingen mopperen en zich vragen stellen waarom de dopjes van de flesjes water werden gedaan. Ook dat was een veiligheidsmaatregel. Bij Livenation die Rock Werchter organiseren, zijn ze de editie van 1991 nog lang niet vergeten. Toen vroeg Iggy Pop aan het publiek om met de plastiek flessen te smijten. Tijdens het concert van The Police en hun nummer "Message in a bottle“ vlogen de flesjes in de lucht.
