The above cover shows a “BL & PRESQUE ISLE R.P.O.” cancellation. In 1881, the New Brunswick Railway System (later known as the Canadian Pacific Railroad) steamed into town allowing for starch to be shipped south via New Brunswick. The Bangor & Aroostook arrived in Presque Isle in 1894 allowing for a more direct route to the potato markets. McFarland Collection in Aerospace Medicine and Human Factors Engineering at the Fordham Health Sciences Library, Wright State University School of Medicine, provides an unparalleled scientific resource and data base for physicians, life scientists, engineers and others working at the leading edge of human progress, especially those in the areas of aviation, space and advanced ground transportation. The Collection is regularly consulted by those currently pioneering these fields and is an invaluable source of information constituting the base upon which future progress is being constructed. I met Dr. McFarland in 1958 and came to know him -well. I observed first-hand his pioneering concepts in human factors, enhanced immeasurably by his articulate communications. Starting in the 1930's, he almost singlehandedly launched the human factors effort in aviation, directly collecting data on airline pilot fatigue and other major operational flight safety aspects. Folio-wing Dr. McFarland's untimely death in 1976, an event -widely recognized as taking from us the father of aerospace human factors, his wife, Mrs. Emily McFarland, decided to deed his library and scientific papers to Wright State University School of Medicine, Fordham Health Sciences Library. This gift consisted of more than 6,000 print items and approximately 400 linear feet of scientific manuscripts, unpublished reports, research data and correspondence, covering 50 years of professional work and research by Dr. -

Aroostook County Historical Timeline With a Focus on the Aroostook Valley Watershed Region Compiled by Justin Howe ~9,500 B.C. - ~8,000 B.C. – Known as the Paleo-Indian Period. The reason for the brevity of this period (in many areas the Paleo-Indian Period can last for tens of thousands of years) is that 9,500 B.C. is when the last glacier covering Aroostook County retreated, which is when the first human habitation of the Aroostook County area occurred. The land of Aroostook County was then tundra. The Paleo-Indian Period is characteristically marked by fluted points. ~8,000 B.C. - ~5,000 B.C. – Known as the Early Archaic Period. ~5,000 B.C. - ~500 B.C. – Known as the Middle and Late Archaic Period. Notably in Aroostook County and other areas of New England, this is the time of the Red Paint Peoples. The reason for the name is that at grave sites, bodies and grave goods were almost always covered with red ochre. Post-500 B.C. - Known as the Ceramic Period. This is due to the appearance and wide use of pottery, as well as birch bark and notched arrowheads. There is also likely the cultivation of corn and tobacco. Pre-1500 – The estimated population of the Wabanaki tribe region (Abenaki, Maliseet, Micmac, Passamaquoddy, and Penobscot tribes) before European contact is approximated at about 35,000. 1534 – Jacques Cartier is the first explorer to navigate inland North America. He claims the land of Canada for France. He also trades with Micmacs of New Brunswick. -

A life-saving satellite beacon heads a list of technology transfers for improving safety and the environment as a backup to his voice communica- tions. The beacon served another purpose: the Smithsonian Institution, which requested NASA participation, wanted an accurate record of Uemura's daily positions for correla- tion with snow, ice and air samples he was taking. Beacon cost was defrayed by Uemura's Japanese sponsors, Mainichi Newspapers and Bungei Shunju Publishing Company. The Na- tional Geographic Magazine also supported the project. Still another Goddard effort last year involved tracking a Smithsonian sci- entific expedition across the desolate Western Desert of Egypt. In other ap- plications, the beacons are exten- sively used on buoys to track currents for oceanographic and environmental studies.
