The Kuwajima Formation, the upper division of the lower subgroup, is considered to have been deposited under lacustrine and associated alluvial environments. It has yielded a reasonable number of vertebrate remains that are small, allochthonous, and mostly disarticulated. The Akaiwa Formation, the lower division of the upper subgroup, is suggested to have been formed by fluvial systems with strong currents and rapid deposition. Except for plant fragments, fossils are uncommon. Vertebrates, including dinosaurs, occur in the Kitadani Formation, the upper division of the upper subgroup, in northeastern Fukui Prefecture, and this formation crops out in the Shiramine Area. Therefore, there is a chance that articulated large vertebrate fossils are preserved in the subgroups exposed in the area. However, the indurated nature of the rocks, precipitous topology, thick vegetation cover, and overall poor exposures represent significant challenges to making such a discovery. Further, based on the taphonomy of the observed vertebrates, finding well-preserved large vertebrates in the area will be difficult and require much time and financial support. Here we report on the composition of the Cliffs of Insanity (COI) microvertebrate locality, a newly sampled site containing perhaps one of the densest concentrations of microvertebrate fossils yet discovered in the Mussentuchit Member. The lowest-grade assemblage, located on the southern border of the basin, contains calcite + quartz + hematite + kaolinite + mixed-layer illite-smectite (R = 1, 65À85% illite layers) + discrete illite (IC = 0.5À0.65D82y). Systematic increases in the illite and chlorite crystallinities suggest increasing metamorphic grade from the northwest part of the basin to the southeast. This trend does not follow the pattern previously described for the overlying late Berriasian–early Aptian sediments (Urbio´n and Enciso Groups), which exhibit a higher metamorphic grade. This may result from local variations in sedimentary facies, as well as the circulation of hot migratory fluids. Tertiary compression occurring long after the main metamorphic event is considered to be responsible for the enhanced illite and chlorite crystallinities measured in the SE extreme of the basin. -

Although the tooth was Accepted 12 May, 2020 misidentified as a "Prodeinodon"-like megalosaurid theropod at the first time, detailed comparisons with known theropod dentition anatomy strongly indicate that this tooth belongs to an Acrocanthosaurus-like basal carcharodontosaurid theropod. This referral is supported by its combination of large size, ovoid-shaped cervix outline, mesial carina that does not reach the cervix, labially displaced distal carina and large number of denticles. This tooth is different from other carcharodontosaurid teeth from the same formation in several anatomical aspects (e.g., smaller overall size, presence of transverse lines adjacent to the distal carina, presence of interdenticular sulci in distal carina, denticle densities, crown basal ratio), indicating that carcharodontosaurid diversity in the Early Cretaceous of Korea could have been higher, although these differences may represent positional or individual variations. The presence of Acrocanthosaurus-like theropod teeth (e.g., "Prodeinodon", "Wakinosaurus") from early Cretaceous deposits (Valanginian-Cenomanian) of South Korea, Japan, Mongolia and China indicates that North American Acrocanthosaurus atokensis possibly represents a form that immigrated from the Asia. -

Together with rich skeletal record from northeastern China, they facilitate our understanding about distribution and diversity of birds during the time. In contrast, in Japan, the fossil record of the Early Cretaceous birds is poorly known. Here, we report two ichnotaxa of the Early Cretaceous birds from the Aptian Kitadani Formation. We employ three-dimensional imaging techniques to objectively document and describe the specimens. Specimens include FPDM-F-74 and FPDM-F-75 recovered from an alternating sequence of fine sandstone and mudstone of the Kitadani Formation cropping out in the Kitadani Dinosaur Quarry, Katsuyama, Fukui, Japan. FPDM-F-74 is large in size, bears slender digits with pointy ends (claw impressions), and lacks hallux and webbing traces. These characters allow assignment of FPDM-F-74 to cf. -

The First Possible Choristoderan Trackway from the Lower
www.nature.com/scientificreports OPEN The frst possible choristoderan trackway from the Lower Cretaceous Daegu Formation of South Korea and its implications on choristoderan locomotion Yuong‑Nam Lee1*, Dal‑Yong Kong2 & Seung‑Ho Jung2 Here we report a new quadrupedal trackway found in the Lower Cretaceous Daegu Formation (Albian) in the vicinity of Ulsan Metropolitan City, South Korea, in 2018. A total of nine manus‑pes imprints show a strong heteropodous quadrupedal trackway (length ratio is 1:3.36). Both manus and pes tracks are pentadactyl with claw marks. The manus prints rotate distinctly outward while the pes prints are nearly parallel to the direction of travel. The functional axis in manus and pes imprints suggests that the trackmaker moved along the medial side during the stroke progressions (entaxonic), indicating weight support on the inner side of the limbs. There is an indication of webbing between the pedal digits. These new tracks are assigned to Novapes ulsanensis, n. ichnogen., n. ichnosp., which are well‑matched not only with foot skeletons and body size of Monjurosuchus but also the fossil record of choristoderes in East Asia, thereby N. ulsanensis could be made by a monjurosuchid‑like choristoderan and represent the frst possible choristoderan trackway from Asia. N. ulsanensis also suggests that semi‑aquatic choristoderans were capable of walking semi‑erect when moving on the ground with a similar locomotion pattern to that of crocodilians on land. South Korea has become globally famous for various tetrapod footprints from Cretaceous strata1, among which some clades such as frogs2, birds3 and mammals4 have been proved for their existences only with ichnological evidence. -

Particularly noteworthy is that pterosaur tracks are commonly found in this area, although pterosaur tracks are generally rare compared to dinosaur tracks in other areas. Besides, the pterosaur tracks in this site vary widely in their morphology, size, and degree of preservation. Here we report new pterosaur tracks and trackway which are very small and well-preserved among various pterosaur tracks. Manus imprints have average values of 27.8 mm long, 9.0 mm wide, and 3.2 length/width ra- tio. Pes prints show average values of 27.7 mm long, 13.2 mm wide, and 2.1 length/width ratio. Small-sized (< 5 cm) footprints of pterosaur are rarely occurred around the world.
