Russo Abstract This study summarises the known records of the Macrolepidoptera species of the “Bosco Palazzi” area near the municipality of Putignano (Apulia region) in the Murgia mountains in southern Italy. The list of species is based on historical bibliographic data along with new material collected by other entomologists in the last few decades. A total of 207 species belonging to the families Cossidae (3 species), Drepanidae (4 species), Lasiocampidae (7 species), Limacodidae (1 species), Saturniidae (2 species), Sphingidae (5 species), Brahmaeidae (1 species), Geometridae (55 species), Notodontidae (5 species), Nolidae (3 species), Euteliidae (1 species), Noctuidae (96 species), and Erebidae (24 species) were identified. -

Nat. Croat., Vol. 29, No. 2, 227-240, 2020, Zagreb. In 2016 and 2017 a survey of the butterflies and moth fauna of the island of Lokrum, Dubrovnik was carried out. A total of 208 species were recorded, which, together with 15 species from the literature, raised the total number of known species to 223. The results of our survey can be used as a baseline for the study of future changes in the Lepidoptera composition on the island. In comparison with the lit- erature records, eight butterfly species can be regarded as extinct from the island. The most probable reason for extinction is the degradation of the grassland habitats due to the natural succession as well as the introduction of the European Rabbit and Indian Peafowl. Their presence has probably had a tremendously detrimental effect on the native flora and fauna of the island. To conserve the Lepidop- tera fauna of the island, and the still remaining biodiversity, immediate eradication of these introduced species is needed. E-mail: [email protected] Introduction Whitish females of Idaea humiliata (Hufnagel, 1767) are very similar to Idaea fuscovenosa (Goeze, 1781) which are always whitish grey. Therefore these species can be recognised only by the structure of their genitalia. Similar situation is with the genus Nycteola , as it is not easy to identify species using morphological characters. The aim of this article is to present some data on distribution of these species in Lithuania based on the field research. Material and Methods Moths belonging to the Idaea genus were collected during a daytime with an entomological net, while Nycteola moths were collected at night using 160–400W mixed light lamp bulbs. The material is preserved in the collection of the Museum of Zoology of Vilnius University, Lithuania. DNA Barcoding the Geometrid Fauna of Bavaria (Lepidoptera): Successes, Surprises, and Questions Axel Hausmann1*, Gerhard Haszprunar1, Paul D. N. Hebert2 1 Entomology Department, Zoological Collection of the State of Bavaria, Munich, Germany, 2 Biodiversity Institute of Ontario, University of Guelph, Guelph, Canada Abstract Background: The State of Bavaria is involved in a research program that will lead to the construction of a DNA barcode library for all animal species within its territorial boundaries. The present study provides a comprehensive DNA barcode library for the Geometridae, one of the most diverse of insect families. Methodology/Principal Findings: This study reports DNA barcodes for 400 Bavarian geometrid species, 98 per cent of the known fauna, and approximately one per cent of all Bavarian animal species. Although 98.5% of these species possess diagnostic barcode sequences in Bavaria, records from neighbouring countries suggest that species-level resolution may be compromised in up to 3.5% of cases. All taxa which apparently share barcodes are discussed in detail. One case of modest divergence (1.4%) revealed a species overlooked by the current taxonomic system: Eupithecia goossensiata Mabille, 1869 stat.n. is raised from synonymy with Eupithecia absinthiata (Clerck, 1759) to species rank. Deep intraspecific sequence divergences (.2%) were detected in 20 traditionally recognized species. Conclusions/Significance: The study emphasizes the effectiveness of DNA barcoding as a tool for monitoring biodiversity. Open access is provided to a data set that includes records for 1,395 geometrid specimens (331 species) from Bavaria, with 69 additional species from neighbouring regions. Taxa with deep intraspecific sequence divergences are undergoing more detailed analysis to ascertain if they represent cases of cryptic diversity. -

A wide range of nectar sources had persisted until mid- summer, and when the sun came out at least, attracted large numbers and a rich diversity of butterflies. We explored from the lowlands to the high mountains, in weather that varied from warm and humid, to very hot and dry, albeit with persistent northerly winds on the last couple of days. In total the week produced 113 species of butterfly, together with many dazzling day-flying moths (particularly burnets) and other wonderful bugs and beasties. And almost nightly moth trapping gave us a window into the night-life, albeit dominated by Pine Processionaries, but with a good sample of the big, beautiful and bizarre. Add in to the mix the stunning scenery, a good range of mountain birds, a few mammals and reptiles, and wonderful food, drink and accommodation at Casa Sarasa: the perfect recipe for an outstanding holiday! Day 1 Wednesday 6th July We arrived at Zaragoza Airport, met Peter, and boarded the minibuses to be taken to Casa Sarasa in Berdún; it was sunny and hot, but there were still a few interesting birds to be seen en route, including White Stork, Booted Eagle, and Red and Black Kites. -

Executive summary This is the final report on work carried out for the biological control of French broom in California by Commonwealth Scientific and Industrial Research Organisation at its European Laboratory in France in collaboration with the USDA European Biological Control Laboratory. Survey trips have been completed to Tunisia, southern Spain and western Portugal. Available resources limited a full suite of planned trips. Morocco and eastern Mediterranean Turkey are the only countries that still need to be surveyed. A recent study of the taxonomy of Genista suggests Morocco is the key region for undiscovered potential biocontrol agents. Analysis of the results of previous trips is presented including validation of the sampling regime and the impacts of seed feeding insects on the seed production of French broom and close relatives. Insect biology and culture development studies have been completed for the psyllid Arytinnis hakani. This species was found to have 5 nymphal instars and be multi-voltine with a 40-45 day generation time, passing the hot summer months as early instar nymphs. Lepidapion argentatum specificity and taxonomic status is unclear from current literature but a PhD project based around this group has recently obtained funding. -

Avian Biol. 2020: e02474 Supplementary material Supplementary materials DNA extraction Ethanol was removed from the samples by freeze-drying to prevent loss of DNA from the vials, and dried samples were stored at -80 °C until DNA extraction. DNA was extracted using a precipitation and re-suspension method adapted from Bramwell et al. (1995), with modifications recommended by Lever et al. (2015). Lysis buffer (30 mM Tris, 30 mM EDTA, pH 8) was added at room temperature and mixed by vortex. Samples were Quickly re-frozen in liQuid nitrogen to lyse cells and then briefly thawed in a 37 °C water bath. A mixture of two different beads (0.2 g ceramic beads 1.4 mm and 0.3 g garnet beads 0.7 mm) was added and samples were shaken at 30 Hz for 3 x 40 s using a TissueLyser II (Qiagen, Hilden Germany). To 19-parts sample solution, 1 part SDS solution (10% w/v) and 0.1 parts proteinase K (20 mg/ml) were added, and samples incubated for 4 h in a shaking incubator at 55 °C to continue lysis and protein digestion. Sample temperature was raised to 65 °C and to each 5 part sample solution, 1 part of 5 M NaCl solution was added and mixed by inversion, then 0.8 parts warm CTAB solution (hexadecyltrimethylammonium bromide, 10% w/v) added and mixed.
