On Friday, August 23rd, Student Council members played games to get to know and understand each other. They also pondered on talking about leadership as representatives of the school. The most important thing that the Student Council members did was setting our school’s mission statement: "The YHIS Student Council exists to develop outstanding servant leaders by representing students’ voices, unifying the student body, and positively impacting our school to form a flourishing community." The mission statement unquestionably reinforces the role of members of the Student Council as the representatives of YHIS. On Saturday, August 24th, Student Council members planned future activities of YHIS. The Zoom calls with other iSC schools’ Student Council members were interesting and efficient. This was impressive as Student Council members were able to receive various ideas from students from different schools. Marketing Director David Lee commented that the Zoom call with StuCo members from the other iSC schools was a refreshing experience because it made him feel as if he was a businessman, talking to five different leaders. He also added that although there were some moments where they were out of things to say, he was glad to be the one to lift the dying atmosphere up to help each other. President Neo Kim mentioned that he first thought the position of Student Council president was to peacefully rule over other members of the Student Council, and even the school. However, through the StuCo Retreat, he learned that the Student Council exists not to rule over a group of people, but to serve them. Grade 8 representative Elly Yeo said that the retreat could be improved by students having more time on the Zoom call, as they only had a chance to talk with Qingdao. She also added that having more opportunities to interact with other StuCo members would improve our group. This camp was for all students in 6th to 12th grade, and it took place in Penglai at the MaJiaGou retreat center. The purpose of the trip was to build community and a sense of unity within the YHIS secondary student body. The students spent two full days together at the retreat center, participating in team-building activities such as creating a team chant and a team name. On Thursday afternoon, students played a game called "Scavenger Hunt." This game required them to take plenty of ridiculous photos and videos as a team. After that, students had free time. They played outdoor sports and indoor board games with their friends and teachers. Also, many snacks were provided to students. In the evening, they had discussion time within the advisory groups. It was a good chance to get to know each other better. Continued on Page 4... S E P T E M B E R 2 0 1 9 | P A G E 4 SECONDARY FALL CAMP 2019 Written by: Neo (G12) Continued from Page 3... On Friday morning, students had a fun time playing laser tag and exploring the park at MaJiaGou. In the afternoon, they participated in team-building activities. This time was special because everyone got wet. Everyone enjoyed playing with water in the hot weather. It went well as nobody got hurt from slipping. Finally, the Student Council led students in an advisory group competition of charades, which was fun to play and, of course, hilarious to watch. Every student was satisfied with the event done by the group. It was a good time to see the potential of the Student Council. Overall, the trip laid a foundation of school unity which we will continue to build on throughout this school year. Students and staff all had an enjoyable time, and the fall trip was a perfect way to get the school year off to a great start. The movie that students and parents watched was "Aladdin," which was released on May 24, 2019, in the United States. It was produced by Walt Disney Pictures. The movie is a remake of the folk tale "Aladdin." It is famous for the magic lamp that the owner rubs with his/her hands to make the fairy "Genie" comes out and grant the owner's three wishes. The main character, Aladdin, used his wishes wisely as his choices resulted in true love with Princess Jasmine. Furthermore, the movie also gives people the message "To be yourself". Dinner, which many students, teachers, and parents enjoyed, was provided by YHIS and parents who brought foods and desserts for students. The movie played on the school field. YHIS provided mats for families so that people could sit and watch the movie comfortably. Some inconveniences were having a small screen and having no subtitles, making it hard for some people to understand, especially for Korean and Brazilian families. Neo Kim, the 12th-grade school president of YHIS, commented that the family movie night went very well as no one got injured and a lot of people enjoyed the movie. He said that the best part of the family movie night was that students and their families had chances to watch the movie together. He also added that many students and their parents purchased from the Student Council's market, where Student Council members sold beverages, snacks, and a lot of popcorn! Indeed, Family movie night was a great time! MEDIA REVIEW; ALADDIN SUMMARY Written by: Frank (G7) There was a boy named Aladdin from Agraba who was a thief. Zafar told Aladdin that if he took a lamp in a cave then he would give him everything, but he got trapped in the dangerous cave trying to retrieve the lamp. He rubbed the lamp and met Genie who told him about his three wishes! He used his first wish to get out of cave but he didn’t rub the lamp, so it actually did not count as a wish. After he got out, he wished to become a prince because he loved a princess that could only marry a prince by law. Unfortunately, Zafar found out that the prince is actually Aladdin, who is not a prince at all. He used Genie’s second wish to save his life. Zafar stole the lamp and wished to become the most powerful man in the world by becoming a genie. He didn’t realize that he would actually be imprisoned in a lamp and to whoever find it. After Zafar went away, Aladdin wished for Genie to be free, like he promised, instead of wishing to marry the princess. But after the princess became sultan (king), she did away with the law that a princess must marry a prince, so she could marry Aladdin! It is on August 15th in the lunar calendar and is also known as the Moon Festival as the full moon on the day is the brightest and the roundest. Mid-Autumn Festival has 3000 years of history from Zhou dynasty when people sang and danced together under the bright full moon. On September 12th, 2019, YHIS students and YIA students celebrated the Mid-Autumn Festival together by making moon cakes. They learned about the new type of moon cake that people eat without baking, and also about how to make moon cakes. Moon cakes are a special food that people eat in the Mid- Autumn Festival. They are round to exemplify the full moon.

My 2019/2020 TRAPE is about Korean Entertainment! I have been into K-Pop for almost 3 years and I have always been researching lots of things about Korean celebrities, their activities and their TV shows. Since I was a child, I have always been very curious about the Asian culture, even though I thought they were gangster. As I grew up, I have become more and more connected to their culture. Then, at the end of 2016, I listened to my first K-Pop song ever. I was 10 years old and I was in primary school when I got to know EXO, the first group I listened to. They had a big impact in my life because in that moment I was struggling mentally and physically... The only thing that made me happy, was listening to their songs! They would make feel better in every way possible, once I listened to some music, I’d completely forget about my worries. It was always the best part of my days. That is why I have grown attached to K-Pop songs, dances and singers. Table of contents WHAT WERE THE MOST FAMOUS SERIES (KOREAN DRAMAS)? (2019) IS IT POPULAR IN OTHER COUNTRIES? PROFESSIONAL VS NON-PROFESSIONAL TRANSLATION OF KOREAN TV DRAMAS Jessica Hall Abstract Can non-professional subtitles be a successful replacement for professional subtitles? The purpose of this study is to examine the differences in the English subtitles of Korean TV drama series between those written by paid translators for Netflix, and those by volunteer fansubbers for Rakuten Viki. This study will explore the main differences between the two styles of subtitling, the potential reasons for these differences, and the reception of both kinds of subtitles among audiences by reviewing opinions shared on online discussion forums such as Reddit and Viki Discussions. These forums will also be used to explore online public opinions about the ethics of Viki as a fansubbing platform and the implication of unpaid translation for the industry. Chapter 1: Introduction 1.1 Fansubbing Fansubbing, short for fan-subtitling, is a unique style of subtitling in which overseas media content is translated by untrained fans over the internet. Fansubbing began in the 1980s with the translation of Japanese anime into English by fan groups in the USA due to a lack of access to content, as well as a desire for a more source-oriented approach to its cultural aspects (Perego & Pacinotti, 2020). Due to these origins, fansubbing has been most often associated with Japanese anime. In 2006, Díaz-Cintas and Muñoz Sánchez defined fansubs as, “fan-produced, translated, subtitled version of a Japanese anime programme,” (2006:37). But as global interest and technology developed, the practice expanded to include other languages as well as other types of audiovisual content such as films, so that fansubbing now describes the unpaid creation of subtitles for films or TV series from or to any source or target language.
