STUDENT COUNCIL RETREAT 2019 Written by: Neo (G12)

On August 23rd and 24th, YHIS Student Council went to StuCo Retreat to build stronger relationships with each other, to talk, and to plan for the future to make improvements for the school.

On Friday, August 23rd, Student Council members played games to get to know and understand each other. They also pondered on talking about leadership as representatives of the school. The most important thing that the Student Council members did was setting our school’s mission statement: "The YHIS Student Council exists to develop outstanding servant leaders by representing students’ voices, unifying the student body, and positively impacting our school to form a flourishing community." The mission statement unquestionably reinforces the role of members of the Student Council as the representatives of YHIS. On Saturday, August 24th, Student Council members planned future activities of YHIS. The Zoom calls with other iSC schools’ Student Council members were interesting and efficient. This was impressive as Student Council members were able to receive various ideas from students from different schools.

Marketing Director David Lee commented that the Zoom call with StuCo members from the other iSC schools was a refreshing experience because it made him feel as if he was a businessman, talking to five different leaders. He also added that although there were some moments where they were out of things to say, he was glad to be the one to lift the dying atmosphere up to help each other.

President Neo Kim mentioned that he first thought the position of Student Council president was to peacefully rule over other members of the Student Council, and even the school. However, through the StuCo Retreat, he learned that the Student Council exists not to rule over a group of people, but to serve them.

Grade 8 representative Elly Yeo said that the retreat could be improved by students having more time on the Zoom call, as they only had a chance to talk with Qingdao. She also added that having more opportunities to interact with other StuCo members would improve our group. S E P T E M B E R 2 0 1 9 | P A G E 3

The purpose of the trip was to build community and a sense of unity within the YHIS secondary student body. The students spent two full days together at the retreat center, participating in team-building activities such as creating a team chant and a team name.

On Thursday afternoon, students played a game called "Scavenger Hunt." This game required them to take plenty of ridiculous photos and videos as a team. After that, students had free time. They played outdoor sports and indoor board games with their friends and teachers. Also, many snacks were provided to students. In the evening, they had discussion time within the advisory groups. It was a good chance to get to know each other better.

SECONDARY FALL CAMP 2019 Written by: Neo (G12)

Continued from Page 3...

On Friday morning, students had a fun time playing laser tag and exploring the park at MaJiaGou. In the afternoon, they participated in team-building activities. This time was special because everyone got wet. Everyone enjoyed playing with water in the hot weather. It went well as nobody got hurt from slipping. Finally, the Student Council led students in an advisory group competition of charades, which was fun to play and, of course, hilarious to watch. Every student was satisfied with the event done by the group. It was a good time to see the potential of the Student Council.

Overall, the trip laid a foundation of school unity which we will continue to build on throughout this school year. Students and staff all had an enjoyable time, and the fall trip was a perfect way to get the school year off to a great start. S E P T E M B E R 2 0 1 9 | P A G E 5

FAMILY MOVIE NIGHT 2019 Written by: Aaron (G9)

On September 6, 2019, Family Movie Night was held from 7:30 p.m. to 9:10 p.m. The movie night was distinct from original movie nights as students enjoyed watching a movie with their families and their friends.

The movie that students and parents watched was "Aladdin," which was released on May 24, 2019, in the United States. It was produced by Walt Disney Pictures. The movie is a remake of the folk tale "Aladdin." It is famous for the magic lamp that the owner rubs with his/her hands to make the fairy "Genie" comes out and grant the owner's three wishes. The main character, Aladdin, used his wishes wisely as his choices resulted in true love with Princess Jasmine. Furthermore, the movie also gives people the message "To be yourself".

Dinner, which many students, teachers, and parents enjoyed, was provided by YHIS and parents who brought foods and desserts for students. The movie played on the school field. YHIS provided mats for families so that people could sit and watch the movie comfortably. Some inconveniences were having a small screen and having no subtitles, making it hard for some people to understand, especially for Korean and Brazilian families.

Neo Kim, the 12th-grade school president of YHIS, commented that the family movie night went very well as no one got injured and a lot of people enjoyed the movie. He said that the best part of the family movie night was that students and their families had chances to watch the movie together. He also added that many students and their parents purchased from the Student Council's market, where Student Council members sold beverages, snacks, and a lot of popcorn!

Indeed, Family movie night was a great time!

MEDIA REVIEW; ALADDIN SUMMARY Written by: Frank (G7)

There was a boy named Aladdin from Agraba who was a thief. Zafar told Aladdin that if he took a lamp in a cave then he would give him everything, but he got trapped in the dangerous cave trying to retrieve the lamp. He rubbed the lamp and met Genie who told him about his three wishes! He used his first wish to get out of cave but he didn’t rub the lamp, so it actually did not count as a wish. After he got out, he wished to become a prince because he loved a princess that could only marry a prince by law. Unfortunately, Zafar found out that the prince is actually Aladdin, who is not a prince at all. He used Genie’s second wish to save his life. Zafar stole the lamp and wished to become the most powerful man in the world by becoming a genie. He didn’t realize that he would actually be imprisoned in a lamp and to whoever find it. After Zafar went away, Aladdin wished for Genie to be free, like he promised, instead of wishing to marry the princess. But after the princess became sultan (king), she did away with the law that a princess must marry a prince, so she could marry Aladdin! S E P T E M B E R 2 0 1 9 | P A G E 6

MID-AUTUMN FESTIVAL 2019 Written by: Elly (G8)

Mid-Autumn Festival is the second most important Chinese festival after Chinese New Year. It is on August 15th in the lunar calendar and is also known as the Moon Festival as the full moon on the day is the brightest and the roundest. Mid-Autumn Festival has 3000 years of history from Zhou dynasty when people sang and danced together under the bright full moon.

On September 12th, 2019, YHIS students and YIA students celebrated the Mid-Autumn Festival together by making moon cakes. They learned about the new type of moon cake that people eat without baking, and also about how to make moon cakes.

Moon cakes are a special food that people eat in the Mid- Autumn Festival. They are round to exemplify the full moon. As people worship the moon, they sacrifice moon cakes as the offering. Gathering with family members and eating moon cakes is the celebration that symbolizes the reunion of the family. On Mid-Autumn Festival, Chinese people go back to their hometowns and gather with their family members to spend the festival, as it is one day of public holiday for everyone. They make moon cakes, enjoy the lion dance, and have fun watching lantern shows. People also give moon cakes to their relatives, friends, family, and people whom they are thankful to, wishing them a long and happy life.

The legend of the Chang E goddess is the most popular story of the Mid-Autumn Festival. The story is as follows; there was a man called HouYi who had a medicine that would make anyone who eats the medicine become a god or a goddess. He gave the medicine to his wife, Chang E, to keep the medicine secret. However, Peng Meng, who desired to be a god, forced Chang E to give him the medicine. Since Chang E wanted to prevent a bad person to become god, she ate it and flew to the moon. As HouYi missed Chang E, he sacrificed moon cakes on August 15th annually. Nowadays, people celebrate Mid-Autumn Festival to be thankful for the yields they harvest. The Mid-Autumn Festival has settled into the history of China. S E P T E M B E R 2 0 1 9 | P A G E 7

WORLD NEWS Written by: David (G11)

In the afternoon of September 25, 2019, a 5.8 magnitude earthquake struck Pakistan-administered Kashmir, a region located over borders of Pakistan and India. According to Urban Geography Specialty Group, it seems the epicenter was located 120 kilometers away to Southeast from Islamabad, or the capital city. India’s medias reported that the vibration was perceptible even at the capital of India, New Delhi. Medias also reported photos of the region, such as collapsed buildings, uprooted trees, cars sunk in the fissures in the ground, and more.

The earthquake itself killed 22 people, including children, and injured more than 300. The Pakistan government announced via Twitter that Imran Khan, the Prime Minister of Pakistan, expressed deep concern about the incident and ordered all departments to support the area immediately. The Pakistan military reported that the aviation and medical support team has been dispatched in the area.

This incident is compared to a past earthquake incident at the same region in 2015 and 2005, when each case caused casualties of 400 deaths and 70,300 deaths with stronger magnitudes of 7.5 and 7.6. Pakistan suffers frequent earthquakes due to its geographical characteristic of having two tectonic plates – the Eurasian plate and Indian plate – beneath its territory.
