Kashmir Political During the Mughal Period Introduction Kashmir is known for its rich socio-cultural history. The historians of 16th and 17th century are enormously in praise of Kashmir, its climate, flora, fauna and most importantly its artistic handicraft items. Though the modern scholars of Kashmir have dealt with all the aspects notable among them are Abdul Majid Mattoo in his Kashmir Under the Mughals, P.N.K Bamzai in his Socio-Economic History of Kashmir, G.M.D Sufi in his Kashir: Being A History of Kashmir From the Earliest Times to Our Own, and also Mushtaq Ahmad Kaw in his Agrarian System of Kashmir. These modern scholars have given a graphic picture of the agrarian structure, Mughal administrative and taxation system in the subah of Kashmir. One important aspect that is nearly missing from all these modern scholars that deal with Mughal period is the handicraft industry of subah of Kashmir. This thesis is an attempt to explore the foreign influences on handicraft industry, factors that led the Mughals to patronize handicraft industry. What where the source of raw materials for the handicraft industry. Tools and techniques applied in the manufacturing process will also be explained. The market for Kashmiri handicrafts or otherwise who were the consumers of handicrafts of Kashmir will be discussed. The roots used by the merchant communities for the import of raw material and export of manufactured handicraft items will also be explained. Organization of karkhanas is also studied here. Additionally, an attempt is also made to look into the socio-economic conditions of artisans of Kashmir who were engaged in the task. This work will focus on some of the important handicraft industries like shawl industry, carpet industry, paper industry, paper-machie, silk industry, wood craft industry and metal craft industry. All these industries existed before Mughal conquest but they reached to perfection during the Mughal period. The Mughal emperors because of their huge demands took keen interest for the development of handicraft industry of Kashmir. The carpet industry has remained a key economic activity in the production and has a great contribution towards exports from the handicraft sector in Kashmir. Kashmir has remained on industry backward state due to lack of investment from the private sector, remoteness and poor connectivity, shallow markets, poor infrastructure and most importantly a law and order situation.

    Chapter IV Dress and Fabrics of the Mughals- The great Mughal emperor Akbar was not only a great ruler, an administrator and a lover of art and architecture but also a true admirer and entrepreneur of different patterns and designs of clothing. The changes and development brought by him from Ottoman origin to its Indian orientation based on the land‟s culture, custom and climatic conditions. This is apparent in the use of the fabric, the length of the dresses or their ornamentation. Since very little that is truly contemporary with the period of Babur and Humayun has survived in paintings, it is not easy to determine exactly what the various dresses look like other than what has been observed by the painters themselves. But we catch a glimpse of the foreign style of these dresses even in the paintings from Akbar‟s period which make references, as in illustrations of history or chronicles of the earlier times like the Babar-Namah or the Humayun-Namah.1 With the coming of Mughals in India we find the Iranian and Central Asian fashion in their dresses and a different concept in clothing.2 (Plate no. 1) Dress items of the Mughals: Akbar paid much attention to the establishment and working of the various karkhanas. Though articles were imported from Iran, Europe and Mongolia but effort were also made to produce various stuffs indigenously.     Better economic alternative for rural Kashmir :by Mr. Riyaz Ahmed Wani GENESIS OF ECONOMIC CRISIS IN J&K Post 1947, Kashmir economy had a cataclysmic start. The state embarked upon its development process by the enactment of Big Landed Estates Act 1949-50, a radical land redistribution measure which abolished as many as nine thousand Jagirs and Muafis. The 4.5 lac acres of land so expropriated was redistributed to tenants and landless. Land ceiling was fixed at 22.75 acres. This was nothing short of a revolutionary departure from a repressive feudal past. And significantly enough, it was preceded or followed by little or negligible social disturbance. This despite the fact that no compensation was paid to landlords. More than anything else, it is this measure which set the stage for new J&K economy. In the given circumstances, the land reforms proved sufficient to turn around the economic condition of the countryside with the hitherto tenants in a position to own land and cultivate it for themselves. However, the reforms though unprecedented in their nature and scale were not only pursued for their own sake but were also underpinned by an ambitious economic vision. Naya Kashmir, a vision statement of Shiekh Muhammad Abdullah, laid down more or less a comprehensive plan for a wholesome economic development of the state. But the dismissal of Shiekh Abdullah’s legitimately elected government in 1953 by the centre changed all that. The consequent uncertainty which lingers even now created an adhocist political culture animated more by vested interest than a commitment to the development of the state.

    Chapter V Textiles under Mughals- The advent of the Mughal dynasty gave an undeniable boost to production of the up-market textile, as to other craft. Textiles are singled out for mentioned by Abul Fazl, the minister and biographer of Akbar (1556-1605), in his Ain-i-Akbari, compile in the 1590‟s as a subject in which the emperor took particular interest. Akbar favoured woollen garment – the chosen wear of Sufis (Muslim mystics) – „from his indifference to everything that is worldly‟ in preference to the richer stuffs. His penchant for wool is also indicated by the steps he took to improve shawl manufacture; especially in the relation to dyes and width of fabric.1 Ain-i- Akbari goes into fascinating details on the manner of classifying garments in the imperial wardrobe (toshkhana). The textiles were arranged according to the date of entry which was recorded, sometime with other information, on a label tacked on to the piece (practice which survived in provision toshkhana into the 20th century). Price, colour and weight were also taken into account. Within these boundaries, textile took precedence according to the nature of the day, astrologically auspicious or otherwise on which they were received. A further refinement took into account the colours, of which thirty five are listed in the order of precedence. Abul Fazl further records that imperial workshops had been set up in the cities of Lahore, Agra, Fatehpur Sikri and Ahmedabad, where the best of the local craftsmen were requisitioned to supply the needs of the court.2 Persian masters were brought in to teach improved techniques.
