Alphabet Soup Fraise Amazombie Gulch Black Tie Affair Little Mike Cajun Beat Precisionist Eldaafer Prized 1996 Breeders’’ Cup Classic Winner AAllpphhaabbeett SSoouupp OFFICIAL 2016 OLD FRIENDS BREEDERS’ CUP PROGRAM Welcome In 1984, under a sunnier sky than anything the Beach Boys ever evoked, I was at Hollywood Park waiting for the gates to spring open revealing the greatest idea in the history of horse racing —the Breeders' Cup. For the uninitiated, the Breeders' Cup is like the World Series, NHL and NBA all in one day. And you might as well toss in the Super Bowl. Over the years, I've attended a dozen Breeders' Cups. I saw Precisionist win the 1985 Sprint at Aqueduct, and Fraise nip Sky Classic in the 1992 Turf at Gulfstream Park, and Black Tie Af fair’s dominating victory in the 1991 Classic at Churchill Downs. Now, they are all buried at Old Friends. And, while their exhilarating athleticism in front of a grandstand exploding with screaming fans still gets my heart pumping, it's their last days, with just a handful of us, that I remember the most. They all showed the same intelligence, grace and courage at the end as they did at the beginning. As we await the 33rd running of the Breeders' Cup at Santa Anita, I can walk around the farm and feed carrots to Classic winner Alphabet Soup (1996), Turf winner Little Mike (2012), Sprint winner Amazombie (2011), Marathoner Eldaafer (2010), and dozens of others who participated, including Silver Charm, Hidden Lake, Affirmed Success, Tinners Way, Touch Gold, and Game on Dude.

The Classic headlines 13 Breeders’ Cup races that are spread out over two days, totaling $28 million in purses and undoubtedly crowning champions in several divisions. California Chrome, a 5-year-old son of Lucky Pulpit, who is owned by California Chrome LLC, a group comprised of Perry Martin and Taylor Made Farm, has shown this year what a horse can do when allowed to grow into himself and reach his physical peak. • Touch Gold 1994 B H, Deputy Minister – Passing Mood (Buckpasser)
Old Friends Touch Gold 1994 b H, Deputy Minister – Passing Mood (Buckpasser) 1997 Belmont Stakes winner Touch Gold was one of the best of an exceptional crop of contenders. The bay son of Deputy Minister won the Lexington Stakes (G2) at Keeneland with Gary Stevens up, but trainer David Hofmans and owners Frank Stronach and Stonerside Stable decided not to run the late May colt in the Derby. He acquitted himself well in the Preakness. With Chris McCarron riding he beat all but the Derby winner, Silver Charm, and Derby second and third place finishers Captain Bodgit and Free House. Touch Gold turned the tables when he denied Silver Charm the Triple Crown in a Belmont Stakes duel to the wire that racing fans will long remember. Touch Gold retained top form through the summer with his win in the Haskell (G1) over Anet, Free House and Tale of the Cat, with Chris McCarron again in the irons. Strong fields indeed! At four years old Touch Gold ran second to Arch in Keeneland’s Fayette Stakes (G3). He retired from racing with $1,679,907 and 6 wins, 3 seconds and 1 third in 15 starts. At stud at Frank Stronach’s Adena Springs Farm, Touch Gold sired 74 stakes performers including Stephen Foster winner and fellow Old Friends resident Seek Gold. Old Friends thanks Mr. Stronach for enabling Touch Gold’s retirement to our main farm and for his generous support If you would like a share in this horse, you may complete the form below.
