Marley’s Freedom is one of three females to have won the race twice joining Linita (1961-1963) and Somethinaboutlaura (2007-2008). Finest City scored in 2016 prior to her victory in the Breeders’ Cup and Sprint later in the year that clinched her as the champion female sprinter. The talented California bred Skye Diamonds, a bargain claim for $32,000, clicked in 2017 for a partnership that includes Tom Acker and Bloom Racing and trainer Bill Spawr. It was known as the Stakes (1974-2013) when offered at Hollywood Park. Due to the postponement of the Derby from May 2 to September 5, the Los Alamitos Derby will be part of the “Road to the ’’ this year. The winner of the LA Derby will receive 20 points towards earning a berth in the starting gate two months later at . The runner-up will collect eight points, the third place finisher four and two points will go to the fourth place finisher. The talented Game Winner became the shortest priced winner in race history with his score in 2019. He paid $2.10 while tallying by five lengths for owners Gary and May West and Hall of Fame trainer Bob Baffert. Owned by the partnership of Mike Pegram, Karl Watson and Paul Weitman, Once On Whiskey scored a 7-1 upset under jockey Flavien Prat in 2018. The victory was the record eighth in the race for Baffert. He won the race five times in Inglewood and had scored previously at Los Alamitos with (2017) and Gimme Da Lute (2015).

Accelerate outbattled Semper Fortis, then survived a claim of foul to capture the 2016 Derby for Hronis Racing LLC and trainer John Sadler. The 9-10 favorite, who was ridden by Tyler Baze, who won the 2008 Swaps with Tres Borrachos in Inglewood, prevailed by a head.

Shared Belief rolled to an easy victory in the inaugural Los Alamitos Derby for a partnership that included radio and television personality Jim Rome and Hall of Fame trainer Jerry Hollendorfer.
