LThe same words today could describe octogenarian Ron McAnally, John Henry’s Hall of Fame trainer and poster boy for the geriatric set. McAnally, who celebrated his 82nd birthday on July 11, ages gracefully while continuing to pump out Grade 1 stakes winners. Seated at a Clocker’s Corner table one morning in June near the end of the extended Santa Anita Park meet and looking forward to Del Mar, McAnally made only a few minor concessions to Father Time while continuing his lifelong love affair with his job. “As long as I’m alive, that’s all I know how to do,” said the soft-spoken trainer of the regimen that keeps him young: showing up at the track early every morning seven days a week. “I don’t play golf, tennis, or cards.” McAnally admitted that he does not move as smoothly as he did when he was 41, largely the John Henry’s trainer and Hall of Famer Ron McAnally has just turned 82 years old result of partial knee replacement surgery in 2012, but the anticipation of his next stakes win keeps a bounce in his step and a glint in his eye. “Dan Landers, my assistant since 1995, has Ron McAnally: been my right arm, especially since the knee surgery,” said McAnally, who conditions 15 horses at Santa Anita and another four at Pomona with Jose Miranda, an employee for 42 years.

OF NEW RESTRICTIONS Geroux was scheduled to ride Wednesday at Canterbury Park and had to take a test before he would be allowed to ride there. He took the test Monday and came up positive. AI don=t really have any symptoms,@ Georux said. AI was a little bit tired Monday, but I had a long week last week. I didn=t have any shortness of breath or anything like that.@ In less than a week, jockeys Luis Saez, Martin Garcia, Victor Espinoza, Flavien Prat, Eduard Rojas Fernandez and now Geroux have tested positive. Other than Geroux, the jockeys all rode at Los Alamitos and Saez, Garcia, Espinoza and Prat all rode at the Southern California track July 4. PB: The A is for Allison, A-L-L-I-S-O-N. It's a family name. AK: Right. And you were born in Oyama, British Columbia on October 28th, 1909. AK: Right. At that time was Oyama a fair, larger than it is now or was it, has it shrunk, or, what do you say has happened to it. PB: At that time, it was very small, with less than a dozen families there, folks came there in 1908, bought some land cleared it, and planted orchards. AK: Right. Now where had they come from? PB: My father was from the west of England, near Hunterford-Wilshire. The mother was born in Ireland, Northern Ireland and she and my father met but she took employment with a banker in London. AK: England? PB: England, yeah. AK: Right. So they met in the old country and they were married when they decided to immigrate to Canada.
