Mark Cavendish Most successful British Cyclist The 'Manx Missile' has consistently proved his status as the fastest man on two wheels through his glittering career, winning an incredible 23 Tour de France stages, 2011 UCI Road Race World Championships and 2005 & 2008 World Championships in the Madison on the track to date. Having experienced success on the track Mark joined T-Mobile in 2006 as a stagier. During the 2008 season Mark made his first big impact on the Grand Tours, winning a fantastic two stages in the Giro d'Italia followed by four victories at the Tour de France, becoming the most successful British cyclist overnight at the age of 22. At a new team in 2009, HTC Highroad, Mark continued his success on the road and developed a remarkable partnership with his lead-out man, Mark Renshaw. Cav added six Tour de France victories to his name and became the first Briton to hold the green jersey for two consecutive days. Once again in 2010 Mark hit form for the Tour de France adding 5 stage wins to his tally taking his career total to 15. 2011 was Mark's most successful year to date with a range of incredible performances and achievements. The Manxman became the first ever British cyclist to win the Points Classification at the Tour de France winning the Green Jersey. Adding to this incredible achievement Mark became the UCI Road Race World Champion claiming the Rainbow Jersey, ending Britain's 46 year wait. Following such a successful year on the road he was rewarded an MBE on 30th November for "services to British cycling" at a ceremony at Buckingham Palace. Mark added the 2011 BBC Sports Personality of the Year title with an outstanding 49% of the public vote to other awards including Jaguar's Most Inspirational Sportsman of the Year and SJA Sportsman of the Year. 2012 held new challenges for Mark as he joined Team Sky. Taking on a different role in this year's Tour de France the fastest man on two wheels was part of a team to win the Yellow Jersey. After suffering from a virus and from depression, Mark celebrated a fabulous comeback during Tour de France 2021 with a historic 34th stage win - elevating him to level pegging with Eddy Merckx on that figure. Organizational Forms in Professional Cycling – Efficiency Issues of the UCI Pro Tour Luca Rebeggiani§ * Davide Tondani DISCUSSION PAPER NO. 345 First Version: August 2006 This Version: July 2007 ISSN: 0949–9962 ABSTRACT: This paper gives a first economic approach to pro cycling and analyses the changes induced by the newly introduced UCI Pro Tour on the racing teams’ behaviour. We develop an oligopolistic model starting from the well known Cournot framework to analyse if the actual setting of the UCI Pro Tour leads to a partially unmeant behaviour of the racing teams. In particular, we show that the blamed regional concentration of their race participation depends on a lack of incentives stemming from the licence assignation procedure. Our theo- retical results are supported by empirical data concerning the performance of the racing teams in 2005 and 2006. As a recommendation for future improvements, we derive from the model the need for a relegation system for racing teams. ZUSAMMENFASSUNG: Der Aufsatz stellt die erste ökonomische Analyse des professionellen Radsports dar. Er analysiert insbesondere die Anreizwirkungen der neuen UCI Pro Tour auf Teams und Fahrer. Ausgehend von dem bekannten Cournot-Ansatz entwickeln wir ein einfaches Oligopol-Modell, um zu untersuchen, ob die der- zeitige Pro Tour-Organisation zu einem unerwünschten Verhalten der Teilnehmer führt. Wir zeigen, dass insbe- sondere das Problem der geographischen Konzentration der Rennteilnahmen der Teams von den mangelnden Anreizen abhängt, die vom jetzigen Lizenzvergabesystem ausgehen. Unsere theoretischen Ergebnisse werden durch empirische Daten aus der Pro Tour 2005 und 2006 gestützt. 97th SCHELDEPRIJS April 15 164 riders are present at the Antwerp Great Market Square for the 97th Scheldeprijs. A few days after he won for the third time in Roubaix, Tom Boonen was the big attraction on Antwerp Great Square. Mark Cavendish was not present at the start and as a consequence Tom was the only rider able to reach Oellibrandt’s record. Bernucci, Pronk, Brutt and Louder formed the traditional early breakaway and the maximum gap between the four breakers and the bunch reached 6’56”. A first crash involving Ciolek and Haussler amongst other riders took place at 40 km from the finishing line. At the entrance of the last local lap, the four leaders still had an advantage of 1’07”. Knaven and Hammond counterattacked but at 4 km from the line, the bunch was packed together again. Van Avermaet launched his sprint too early and Petacchi, without his teammates’ help, chose the right side of the road to come to the front in a very impressive way. Nothing and nobody was still able to defeat him when a very big massive crash happened just behind him. Robbie McEwen, Tom Boonen, Greg Van Avermaet and many other riders were the victims of that crash and made acquaintance with Churchill Avenue asphalt. Nobody was badly hurt except McEwen who suffered a brain concussion. It may seem incredible but that was Alessandro Petacchi’s first victory on Belgium territory except for Aalst Criterium. Earlier in the year we asked our members for feedback on previous annual Pedal Power conferences.
