300+ Halloween Songs and Albums 300+ Halloween Songs and Albums Over 300 Songs for Halloween Theme Rides in Your Indoor Cycling Classes Compiled by Jennifer Sage, updated October 2013 Halloween presents a unique opportunity for some really fun musically themed classes—the variety is only limited by your imagination. Songs can include spooky, dark, or classic-but-cheesy Halloween tunes (such as Monster Mash). Or you can imagine the wide variety of costumes and use those themes. I’ve included a few common themes such as Sci-Fi and Spy Thriller in my list. Over the years I’ve gotten many of these song suggestions from various online forums, other instructors, and by simply searching online music sources for “Halloween”, “James Bond”, “Witch”, “Ghost” and other key words. This is my most comprehensive list to date. If you have more song ideas, please email them to me so I can continually update this list for future versions. [email protected]. This year’s playlist contains 50 new specific song suggestions and numerous new album suggestions. I’ve included a lot more from the “darkwave” and “gothic” genres. I’ve added “Sugar/Candy” as its own theme. Sources: It’s impossible to list multiple sources for every song but to speed the process up for you, we list at least one source so you don’t spend hours searching for these songs. As with music itself, you have your own preference for downloading sources, so you may want to check there first. Also, some countries may not have the same music available due to music rights. My own preference is to first look on eMusic, because it is the least expensive means of acquiring music legally, that is, if you download a lot of music. Especially for Halloween or other theme songs, who wants to pay very much for songs that you’ll probably use once a year? (Although a few of the songs included are more versatile and can be used throughout the year). Songs on eMusic are usually about about half the cost of iTunes when purchased as a member, so it may be worthwhile just joining for a month to download as bunch of songs at one time. When I cannot find it on eMusic, I’ll then check Amazon, where songs usually cost $.10 - $.30 less than iTunes. Amazon has two sources, one for CD purchases and for Mp3s. Some are only available on CD, but make sure to check both. Amazon has probably the widest selection of all music. If you cannot find a song on any of these three, then Google the song and see if it is available on another source, such as a foreign download site (some unfortunately are foreign songs, only available in the US as imports). There are a few other sites I list, such as Copyright © 2012 IndoorCyclingAssociation.com Page 1 Indoor Cycling Association 240 Halloween Songs and Albums Spinning.com or a mashup site. Of course, Spotify is also a great source if you don’t want to own the song, but you’ll find that many aren’t available. In each of the sources, do a search for “Halloween” under “Albums”. You will get dozens of additional options for Halloween anthems. Many are covers or remixes, some are good, some are really quite bad, but many will make good “filler” songs for your Halloween rides. You may also want to search for “soundtracks” or “films” for movies, such as Batman, Spiderman, the Matrix and more. ICA now has five Halloween profiles to choose from, each with suggested playlists. • Hounds of Halloween 2013 • The Feared Fang Mountain Ride 2013 • Truth AND Consequences 2012 • Trick or Treat 2012 • It’s a Halloween Party in the Hills 2011 If you are lucky enough to teach several different classes over the Halloween week, you can teach a different ICA profile each day of the week! Or if creating your own, you may want to create a different theme for each one. Here are just a few options: • Cheesy Halloween songs • Spooky/eerie • Monsters (Frankenstein, vampires, werewolves, zombies, etc) • Murder (from various soundtracks, Johnny Bernstein, etc) • Spy/intrigue • UFO/Starwars theme • Pirates • Movie soundtracks • Sugar/candy • Middle Earth, fantasy For the 300+ song playlist that follows (plus over 40 albums), I use the following abbreviations: E = eMusic; A = Amazon, I = iTunes, S = Spotify. I have highlighted in yellow the songs that I particularly like, (and double star** it when I really like it and it’s almost always in my yearly Halloween playlist), but that doesn’t mean some of the others aren’t excellent or that you might like them better. I’ve also highlighted in green the newest additions for 2013, since many download my list every year. • Wicked Karnival October 2006
INTERVIEW WITH NOX ARCANA by Josh Haney Wicked Karnival October 2006 Could you give us a brief history of how you got started? Who does what in the band? Joseph: I began my career as a gothic fantasy artist, selling posters, t-shirts and calendars of my work through my own company, Monolith Graphics, and by 1997, I had established a large audience in the gothic realm. In 1998, I came up with the idea of doing a Halloween music CD that would sound like a soundtrack to a gothic horror movie. I branched out and began producing gothic soundtrack music with another band, but we parted ways after two albums. William and I were old friends and we formed Nox Arcana in 2003. He was very enthusiastic about the project and within a few weeks, we were in the studio working on the initial tracks for Darklore Manor. We work on all of our music together, although I’m more of the composer and William is the better musician. I write the majority of the basic melodies then we work together to flesh them out to create more elaborate compositions. We mix every song together but William handles all the engineering and mastering. I develop the concepts and write the lyrics. I also create the artwork and work together Since 2003 Joseph Vargo and William Piotrowski have been conjuring with Christine Filipak to design the CD the darkest realms imaginable, created solely through their musical packaging. project Nox Arcana, Latin for mysteries of the night. Over the course of five albums they have created their own genre of gothic horror How do you come up with your ideas? soundtracks, all the while amassing a loyal fanbase eager to let their William: A lot of our music has been collective minds eyes wander through the compositions that come inspired by Joseph's artwork.
