Moench. The extract in 70% ethanol (E18) was used to evaluate the chemical qualitative and quantitative composition of polyphenols and terpenoids, and to assess the scavenger activity and antioxidant properties (chemiluminescence method); the extract in 20% propylene glycol (P18) was used to test the antimicrobial effect on E. coli ATCC 8739, S. aureus ATCC 25923 and C. albicans ATCC 10231, and also in diffusion studies on Franz cell device through the use of a synthetic membrane of cellulose acetate type in physiological saline media, in order to evaluate the diffusion effectiveness of the active compounds supported on sugar and water, respectively. Rezumat Scopul acestui studiu a constat în evaluarea compoziției chimice calitative și cantitative, a potențialului antioxidant şi anti- microbian, precum și a unor caracteristici privind difuzia compușilor activi (polifenoli si terpenoide) în mediu de ser fiziologic, a două extracte obținute din partea aeriană de cimbrișor de stâncă, Acinos alpinus (L.) Moench, cunoscut îndeosebi pentru proprietățile aperitive și digestive. Astfel, extractul în etanol 70% (E18) a fost utilizat pentru evaluarea conținutului chimic în polifenoli și terpenoide, dar și pentru estimarea capacității de îndepărtare a radicalilor liberi din mediu, respectiv a efectului antioxidant (studii de chemiluminescență); extractul în propilen glicol 20% (P18) a fost utilizat pentru testarea efectului antimicrobian pe tulpini de E. coli ATCC 8739, S. aureus ATCC 25923 și C. albicans ATCC 10231, respectiv în studii de difuzie (pe celula Franz) utilizând o membrană sintetică de tip acetat de celuloză în mediu de ser fiziologic, cu scopul final al demonstrării eficacității cedării compușilor activi din suport apă, respectiv zahăr. Il nome generico Acinos è preso dal latino ăcĭnǒs (usato da Plinio per riferirsi a una qualità di basilico o a erba aromatica in generale) a sua volta derivato dal greco ακιυος. Il termine greco si riferiva alla pianta di timo e, per la somiglianza tra i due generi, Linneo chiamò l’Acinos alpinus con il nome Tymus alpinus. Il genere Acinos comprende una decina di specie legnose annuali o perenni, ma di corta vita, originarie del sud-Europa e dell’Asia occidentale. In the current study, nutlet morphology of six Clinopodium taxa, previously treated as Acinos in Flora of Turkey, is studied for the first time using stereoscopic and scanning electron microscopy (SEM), and detailed descriptions and illustrations of nutlets are described and illustrated here. According to our results, the nutlets are trigonous and oblong or obovoid shaped. The size of nutlets ranges from 1.2-2.2 mm in length and 0.6-1.5 mm in width. They are brown or dark brown in colour, and the surface patterns are papillate, cellular, ridged, reticulate-ridged or reticulate-areolate. Because nutlet surface shows variations from population to population, Clinopodium alpinum (syn: Acinos alpinus) and C. graveolens subsp. rotundifolium (syn: A. rotundifolius) should be described as species complexes. Our results show that the nutlet surface can be useful as a taxonomic character. All recognized taxa will be clades; adherence to Linnaean ranks is optional. Synonymy is very incomplete (comprehensive synonymy is not a goal of the project, but could be incorporated). Although I anticipate producing a publishable version of this classification at a future date, my near-term goal is to produce a web-accessible version, which will be available to the public and which will be updated regularly through input from systematists familiar with taxa within the Lamiales. All species of the genus were investigated for morphological characters and ITS (internal transcribed spacers) of nrDNA sequence comparison (except C. hausknechtii for ITS). Six members of the genus were also analysed for chromosome numbers. The combined results strongly suggested that Cyclotrichium is a separate genus in Nepetoideae with distinct morphological, phylogenetic, and cytogenetic characteristics. Although many processes are involved, plant–plant interactions are among the most important. The phylogenetic limiting similarity hypothesis states that closely related species tend to compete stronger than distantly related species, although evidence is inconclusive. We used ecological and phylogenetic data on alpine plant communities along an environmental severity gradient to assess the importance of phylogenetic relatedness in affecting the interaction between cushion plants and the whole community, and how these interactions may affect community assemblage and diversity. We first measured species richness and individual biomass of species growing within and outside the nurse cushion species, Arenaria tetraquetra. We then assembled the phylogenetic tree of species present in both com- munities and calculated the phylogenetic distance between the cushion species and its beneficiary species, as well as the phylogenetic community structure. We also estimated changes in species richness at the local level due to the presence of cushions. The effects of cushions on closely related species changed from negative to positive as environmental conditions became more severe, while the interaction with distantly related species did not change along the environmental gradient. Overall, we found an environmental context-dependence in patterns of phylogenetic similarity, as the interaction outcome between nurses and their close and distantly-related species showed an opposite pattern with environmental severity.
