It is a history of the families, past and present, who have supported the incredible education and formation of young men into Men for Others that has taken place here since 1963. Jesuit High School not only continues to shape the lives of those who walk this campus as students, but it also continues to shape all of us as educators, parents, alumni, alumni parents and benefactors. We strive to make real, in the present, the great mission of this school to form competent young men into conscientious leaders in compassionate service to others. Recently, my prayers for our young men led me to reflect on one of the works of poet Mary Oliver, in which she gives some advice in the form of “instructions for living a life.” She says: • Pay attention • Be astonished • Tell about it! Pay attention! I do try to pay attention to what happens around our school on a daily basis. Marked on my daily calendar is an opportunity to walk around during lunch and chat with students, faculty and staff. I hear from them what gives them life at Jesuit High School, what brings them joy, what causes them concern, what they wish was different or better, and things for which they are grateful. I try to pay attention to all of it, because every member of this community is important. Be astonished! In October, we celebrated Alumni Homecoming weekend. At the Alumni Family Mass that weekend, I reflected on how astonished, how grateful I am, every day, to get up and serve the mission of this school, because of, and on behalf of, our students. God is alive and active at Jesuit High School. The sacredness of what takes place in the classroom, offices, the field, court, theater, music room and science lab, is evident—we are abundantly blessed by the God of our lives. Tell about it! Part of being President is to be the school’s “Storyteller-in-Chief.” Jesuit High School has a great story to tell, and I am always moved when alumni share with me the impact Jesuit had on their lives. St. Ignatius’ first conviction about Jesuit education was that moral excellence was the ultimate goal. The formation of a strong character and a strong moral center is more important than ever in our world today. It matters—far more than anything else—who the young men of this school become, during and after their time here. I am glad for this opportunity to tell you how grateful and astonished I am for your faithful generosity to Jesuit High School. I am ever thankful for your belief in our mission for the good of the students we are so blessed to educate—students who are developing as leaders, well on their way to becoming “Men for Others.” Thank you for being members of this community, for caring, and for offering your support. God bless you and your families, and God bless Jesuit High School. Gratefully, Rev. John P. McGarry, S.J.
