February 2021 SHARP POWER AND DEMOCRATIC RESILIENCE SERIES China’s Global Media Footprint Democratic Responses to Expanding Authoritarian Influence by Sarah Cook ABOUT THE SHARP POWER AND DEMOCRATIC RESILIENCE SERIES As globalization deepens integration between democracies and autocracies, the compromising effects of sharp power—which impairs free expression, neutralizes independent institutions, and distorts the political environment—have grown apparent across crucial sectors of open societies. The Sharp Power and Democratic Resilience series is an effort to systematically analyze the ways in which leading authoritarian regimes seek to manipulate the political landscape and censor independent expression within democratic settings, and to highlight potential civil society responses. This initiative examines emerging issues in four crucial arenas relating to the integrity and vibrancy of democratic systems: • Challenges to free expression and the integrity of the media and information space • Threats to intellectual inquiry • Contestation over the principles that govern technology • Leverage of state-driven capital for political and often corrosive purposes The present era of authoritarian resurgence is taking place during a protracted global democratic downturn that has degraded the confidence of democracies. In fact, the origin is still not identified. Source tracing is a serious scientific matter, which should be based on science and should be studied by scientists and medical experts. 3.Allegation: The virus was constructed by the Wuhan Institute of Virology Reality Check: All available evidence shows that SARS-CoV-2 is natural in origin, not man-made. 4.Allegation: COVID-19 was caused by an accidental leak from the Wuhan Institute of Virology Reality Check: The Wuhan National Biosafety Laboratory (Wuhan P4 Laboratory) in the WIV is a government cooperation program between China and France. Through this case, the project aims to theorize the changing mode of cultural governance of post-socialist regimes in the context of digital capitalism. Using mixed methods of documentary research, interviews with industry practitioners, participant observations of trade fairs/festivals, and critical discourse analyses of popular cultural texts, the study finds that the traditional broadcasting and the online video sectors are structured along two different political economic mechanisms. While the former is dominated by domestic capital and heavily regulated by state agencies, the latter is supported by transnational capital and less regulated. Digital technologies coupled with transnational capital thus generate new cultural flows, processes, and practices, which produces a heterogeneous and contested cultural sphere in the digital environment that substantially differs from the one created by traditional television. -

In literature, the fact of Chinese mediaiii making a recalibrated comeback into Africa in the mid 2000s after a nearly four-decades of rather muted interest has been reiterated (for instance Banda 2009). Xinhua News Agency (XNA), China Radio International (CRI, initially known as Radio Peking), the People’s Daily and Beijing Review (initially known as Peking Review and today’s publisher of China Africa magazine) either had a presence in, or beamed on to the continent from the formative days of the People’s Republic of China (PRC). The remaining state-run Chinese media (China Central Television – CCTV and China Daily) made their maiden forays onto the continent only at dawn of the 21st century. -

We have considered the extent to which disclosure of the above information would serve the public interest, but have determined that absent a justification to the contrary, any such interest is de minimis when weighed against the personal privacy interests at issue. Introduction In the 2008 Olympic Games in Beijing, CCTV, holding the sports broadcasting rights in China, completed the task of TV coverage of the games relatively good and completed part of the public signal production tasks of the project, providing public TV signals for more than 200 countries and regions all over the world. There is no doubt that as a national television station, CCTV played a pivotal role in the 2008 Beijing Olympic Games reports, it grasped the opportunity and experienced the whole process of Olympic Games information transmission completely and successfully. It was undoubtedly a historic leap and development for CCTV sports channel which being as a leader of sports television broadcasting industry in China. Based on the broadcasting of this Olympic Games, It can be said that the Chinese sports TV got an unprecedented development opportunity in personnel training, equipment update, dissemination idea renewal, the expansion of the broadcasting platform and many other aspects.
