Monitoring Progress 1 Monitoring Progress of Students Who Are Deaf or Hard of Hearing Susan Rose Department of Educational Psychology University of Minnesota Correspondence: Susan Rose College of Education and Human Development University of Minnesota 178 Pillsbury Drive, SE Minneapolis, MN 55455 Monitoring Progress 2 Abstract Monitoring Progress of Students Who Are Deaf or Hard of Hearing Federal and state legislation has placed a renewed emphasis on accountability and academic outcomes among students who are deaf or hard of hearing. While much attention is given to norm-referenced standardized testing accommodations, there is a need for functional formative assessments for the purpose of monitoring students’ academic progress. This paper addresses some of the evaluative perspective of students’ academic performance within the field of deaf education and the critical need for progress monitoring. A brief review is included of studies conducted using Curriculum- Based Measurement (CBM) with students who are deaf and hard of hearing. With the onset of the P.L.94-142: Education for All Handicapped Children’s Act of 1975, and the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA) of 1997, education of children with hearing loss has been externally revolutionized by agencies and agents seeking more options and opportunities for children with special needs. The reauthorization of IDEA in 2004 and the No Child Left Behind Act of 2001 have placed renewed emphasis on academic standards, assessment, and accountability.

Progress Reports Procedures
Progress Reports Packets & Procedures: A progress reports packet should be created and filed at the time you receive a yellow copy of the most recent IEP (this means everything has been approved) and you’re good to go for the next year. 1) Log-in 2) Go to Home or Main Menu 3) Click Forms Packets on the left hand side (second from the top) 4) Click Progress Reports Packet for Quarterly Reports 5) Select Student to work on 6) Once Progress reports packet opens up.. click Add Form on the right hand side of the screen 7) Click Insert Goal/Progress Page 8) Click on the type of Goal page you created for the annual/tri/initial most recently completed… the goal pages you insert here must be the same type/style you created in your IEP Packet so that all your data is present for your quarterly reports. 9) Once you have inserted the necessary goal pages, File the Progress Reports packet by clicking on the yellow file folder icon w/ the lock next to it. 10) File the packet under… Last name, First name Progress Reports packet.. date of most recent IEP meeting (the meeting in which these goals were created). 11) You will then edit these progress reports at the same frequency and dates that general ed students receive progress notices or meetings (PS = 2x/year, K-12 = 4x/year) a. Ie, if the IEP is dated 4/20/10 your first quarterly progress report will be in May at the end of the semester when final grades go out to all students.

Students Monitor Academic Progress 1 STUDENTS MONITOR ACADEMIC PROGRESS USING DATA FOLDERS TO SEE IF ACADEMIC GAINS ARE MADE By JEANNE PEACOCK Submitted to The Educational Leadership Faculty Northwest Missouri State University Missouri Department of Educational Leadership College of Education and Human Services Maryville, MO 64468 Submitted in Fulfillment for the Requirements for 61‐683 Research Paper Summer 2013 July 19, 2014 Students Monitor Academic Progress 2 ABSTRACT The purpose of this study was to analyze elementary student’s academic gains when they monitored their own progress in the areas of reading Dolch Sight Words, Spelling and Math. These students don’t typically monitor their academic progress; it is done by the Special Education Teacher. Progress towards academic goals is made; but there is often regression and progress is typically slow. The research includes findings that answer the question, “Are there academic gains when elementary students monitor their progress using student Data Folders?” In order for the students to have complete ownership of their learning they created their own Data Folders. They created the graph paper and put a title at the top for each subject. After each informal assessment, the students graphed their percentage on the appropriate data graph. The study was conducted during the 2013-2014 school year and compared to the 2012-2013 school year when these same students did not monitor their progress. Six students were involved in this study and their names are anonymous. The findings were analyzed through A Statistical Program (ASP) software. Findings indicate that there is a difference between the progress elementary students’ make when they monitor their own academic progress and when they do not monitor their own academic progress.
