Teaching Classical Languages Volume 10, Issue 2 Kopestonsky 71 Never Out of Style: Teaching Latin Love Poetry with Pop Music1 Theodora B. Kopestonsky University of Tennessee, Knoxville ABSTRACT Students often struggle to interpret Latin poetry. To combat the confusion, teachers can turn to a modern parallel (pop music) to assist their students in understanding ancient verse. Pop music is very familiar to most students, and they already trans- late its meaning unconsciously. Building upon what students already know, teach- ers can reframe their approach to poetry in a way that is more effective. This essay shows how to present the concept of meter (dactylic hexameter and elegy) and scansion using contemporary pop music, considers the notion of the constructed persona utilizing a modern musician, Taylor Swift, and then addresses the pattern of the love affair in Latin poetry and Taylor Swift’s music. To illustrate this ap- proach to connecting ancient poetry with modern music, the lyrics and music video from one song, Taylor Swift’s Blank Space (2014), are analyzed and compared to poems by Catullus. Finally, this essay offers instructions on how to create an as- signment employing pop music as a tool to teach poetry — a comparative analysis between a modern song and Latin poetry in the original or in translation. The pair filmed a trio of episodes with Mr. Show’s David Cross and Bob Odenkirk, and although the first episode didn’t set the world on fire when it aired in 1997 - HBO neglected to broadcast the other two until 2000 - Tenacious D’s act contributed to the steadily growing cult around the “band’s” brash frontman, and when they finally got around to releasing their debut LP in 2001, it cracked the Top 40 and paved the way for their big-screen debut, 2003’s Tenacious D in The Pick of Destiny, co-starring Ronnie James Dio as himself and Dave Grohl as Satan. You’ve brought the orchestra, synchronized swimmers. — Warsan Shire, “Hope” (in Beyoncé 2016b)1 On 6 February 2016, Beyoncé shocked the popular culture world with her most explicitly polit- ical artistic work to date when she released a surprise video for her new song: “Formation.” The video begins with the image of Beyoncé lounging atop a sinking police car in post-Katrina New Orleans. At 1:23 in the video, rows of black women similarly dressed, all with their hair curly and natural, sit at the bottom of an empty pool and for the next 37 seconds, the beat car- ries the viewer as the video cuts in and out of the pool scene. Beyoncé appears in the second shot of the pool among the dancers, their biceps flexed in a bodybuilding pose. Dundee: The Son of a Legend Returns Home – Campaign Creative 1. Synopsis Crocodile Dundee is back. Well, actually, he’s missing in the Outback. And the only person who might be able to find him is the loudmouthed American son no one knew he had. Introducing Danny McBride as Brian Dundee. This son of a legend is forced to channel his Aussie roots as he teams up with a local expert, Wally Jr., played by Chris Hemsworth. Together, they’ll embark on the ultimate adventure in the land Down Under. It’s time to live up to the family name.
