www.cablefaxdaily.com, Published by Access Intelligence, LLC, Tel: 301-354-2101 CFX TECH – Page 4 4 Pages Today Cablefax DailyTM Tuesday — August 2, 2016 What the Industry Reads First Volume 27 / No. 147 TCA Update: Critics Focus on Diversity, Women The cable-centric portion of TCA began on Fri, and the critics didn’t waste any time putting ethnic/gender diversity and treatment of female characters front and center. Perhaps setting the tone was an executive session over the weekend with new HBO pres, programming Casey Bloys, whose first TCA since taking over for departing Michael Lombardo involved tough questions about HBO’s new series “Westworld” (premieres Oct 2) in which a woman is dragged off presumably to be raped in the 1st ep’s opening sequence. Despite the conceit that she is actually a robot who looks human, it spurred questions similar to those raised last year over a rape scene in the net’s “Game of Thrones.” Bloys said violence on those shows is “pretty extreme on all fronts” and “spread equally” across both genders. Critics also pointed out that the net’s “The Night Of” also centers on a brutalized female victim. After critics persisted, Bloys did say that HBO isn’t tone deaf on the issue. “To your larger point of is it something we think about, yeah. I think the criticism is valid,” he said. “So I think it’s something that people take into account.” The racial issue has also permeated TCA, with critics pointing out that HBO’s new comedy “Vice Principals” pits two white men against a black woman whose job they covet. -

THTR 322— Improv 2: Advanced Improv 2 Units Spring 2021 — Thursdays — 3-5:50pm PT Location: see Zoom link via Blackboard Instructor: Kirstin Eggers Zoom Office: https://usc.zoom.us/my/kirstin.sda Office Hours: By appointment — schedule via email. Email: [email protected] USC Slack: @Kirstin Eggers Course Description “Improv is the only belief system I’ve ever experienced that directly works on how to be. Just how to be." — Ilana Glazer In this workshop course, students will continue the study of the rules and structure of improvised comedy scene work, exploring the use of improv as a tool for performance, writing, and storytelling in general, and improv as a performance art in and of itself. Though the class will encourage a comedic atmosphere, rather than pushing the need to “be funny," the class will embrace relationship and character commitment as the road to successful comedy. Students will amass a body of characters and techniques, a positive mindset for the collaborative and creative process, and a sense of the importance of braveness, boldness, and discipline to carry into their personal, professional, and performance lives. Prerequisites: THTR 101 or THTR 122 Learning Objectives By the end of this course, students should be able to: 1. Apply the fundamentals of improv and performance fluently 2. Assess their own performance work, and others' performance work, with the intent of growth 3. Create innovative applications of the artform and study of improv 4. Generate varied comedic characters 5. Perform a wide range of improvised formats and techniques with confidence “I’m not funny. -

MBMBaM 407: Morton Shart’s Joke School Published on May 21st, 2018 Listen here on TheMcElroy.family Intro (Bob Ball): The McElroy brothers are not experts, and their advice should never be followed. Travis insists he‘s a sexpert, but if there‘s a degree on his wall, I haven‘t seen it. Also, this show isn‘t for kids, which I mention only so the babies out there will know how cool they are for listening. What‘s up, you cool baby? [theme music plays] Justin: Hello everybody, and welcome to My Brother, My Brother and Me, an advice show for the modern era. I‘m your oldest brother, Justin McElroy. Travis: I‘m your middlest brother, Travis of McElroy. Griffin: I‘m your sweet baby brother and 30 under 30 Griffin McElroy. Justin: I love that feudal vibe, Travis. Travis: Thank you! Justin: Hello, everyone. Griffin: I love—everything we do on this podcast is futile, Justin! … Oh, feudal. [unintelligible sounds of agreement from all] Griffin: Okay. Alright. Travis: Okay, yeah, yeah. So I have chosen my summer aesthetic. I‘m ready to announce it, I have— Griffin: Oh, I‘ve been on pins and needles! Travis: Yeah, I did kind of a soft opening, and now I‘m ready to do a hard opening. Griffin: Just the vibe, the look, the feel, the smell, the taste. Travis: Yeah. I‘m ready. It‘s pineapple. Now, here‘s the thing. ―Travis, what do you mean?‖ I‘ll tell you, Griffin, thank you for asking. Griffin: Yeah. Travis: I‘ve got pineapple shorts. -
Political Communication and Virality in the US Presidential Campaign
Political communication and virality in the US presidential campaign A CDA analysis of the 2016 US presidential candidates’ discourses and performances in late night shows Francisco Sánchez Master thesis, 15 hp Supervisor: Media and Communication Studies Fredrik Stiernstedt International/intercultural communication Examiner: Spring 2016 Paola Sartoretto JÖNKÖPING UNIVERSITY Master thesis, 15 credits School of Education and Communication Course: Media and Communication Science with Specialization in International Communication Box 1026, SE-551 11 Jönköping, Sweden Term: Spring 2017 +46 (0)36 101000 ABSTRACT Writer(s): Francisco Sánchez Title: Political communication and virality in the US presidential campaign Subtitle: A CDA analysis of the 2016 US presidential candidates’ discourses and performances in late-night shows Language: English Pages: 46 The current study set out to shed light on the performances that 2016 US presidential candidates used during their interventions on the late-night comedy shows. Following the methodologies of Critical Discourse Analysis, the aim of the thesis was to uncover and, therefore, analyze, the type of discourses that candidates used in the shows and how they combined them. There was established a special focus on the rhetorical styles used by each candidate, as well as the emotional content of the discourses, unexpected situations and comedy performances, with the aim to find the elements which lead to virality. This study reveals the rhetorical strategies used by politicians through an analysis of the political and personal discourses they used in late-nigh comedy shows. According to the results, the political discourse is most prevalent during the interview than the personal, which is used to start conversations and evoke personalized emotions. -
Gender and the Meritocratic Myth of Authenticity in the Cultural Production of Stand-Up Comedy by Stephanie Brown
OPEN MIC? GENDER AND THE MERITOCRATIC MYTH OF AUTHENTICITY IN THE CULTURAL PRODUCTION OF STAND-UP COMEDY BY STEPHANIE BROWN DISSERTATION Submitted in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy in Communications and Media in the Graduate College of the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, 2018 Urbana, Illinois Doctoral Committee: Professor Angharad Valdivia, Chair Professor Cameron McCarthy Professor CL Cole Associate Professor Julie Turnock ABSTRACT This dissertation demonstrates the ways in which gender plays a role in the validating of authenticity and merit in the cultural and industrial spaces of stand-up comedy. Merit and authenticity are arbitrary signifiers invoked by comics, fans, critics, and industry gatekeepers to protect the privilege of straight, white men who continue to dominate the field. I argue that the ideology of comedic authenticity is a means through which to police the boundaries of stand-up comedy while masking its underlying sexism, racism, and homophobia. More specifically, I argue that women, operationalized here as an industrial identity category, are constructed as comedy outsiders who must continually prove their worth through a shifting and slippery set of aesthetic and cultural norms and conditions. Further I explore the emotional and material labor women must perform to achieve success within the field, both on the local level and the industrial level. I draw attention to gatekeeping in stand-up comedy by theorizing it not as a type of rhetoric or artistic form,
