UNIVERSITY OF OKLAHOMA GRADUATE COLLEGE IS GANGAIKONDA CHOLAPURAM BUILT BASED ON VAASTU SASTRA? A THESIS SUBMITTED TO THE GRADUATE FACULTY in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the Degree of MASTER OF SCIENCE IN ARCHITECTURE By Ramya Palani Norman, Oklahoma 2019 IS GANGAIKONDA CHOLAPURAM BUILT BASED ON VAASTU SASTRA? A THESIS APPROVED FOR THE CHRISTOPHER C. GIBBS COLLEGE OF ARCHITECTURE BY THE COMMITTEE CONSISTING OF Callahan, Marjorie P., Chair Warnken, Charles G. Fithian, Lee A. ©Copyright by RAMYA PALANI 2019 All Rights Reserved. iv Abstract The Cholas (848 CE – 1279 CE) established an imperial line and united a large portion of what is now South India under their rule. The Cholas, known worldwide for their bronze sculptures, world heritage temples and land reforms, were also able builders. They followed a traditional systematic approach called Vaastu Sastra in building their cities, towns, and villages. In an attempt to discover and reconstruct Gangaikonda Cholapuram, an administrative capital (metropolis) of the Chola Dynasty, evidence is collected from the fragments of living inscriptions, epigraphs, archaeological excavation, secondary sources, and other sources pertinent to Vaastu Sastra. The research combines archival research methodology, archaeological documentation and informal architectural survey. The consolidation, analysis, and manipulation of data helps to uncover the urban infrastructure of Gangaikonda Cholapuram city. Hydrogeochemical Characteristics of Groundwater in Kumbakonam Taluk, Thanjavur District, Tamil Nadu
Volume 2, Issue 10, October– 2017 International Journal of Innovative Science and Research Technology ISSN No: - 2456 – 2165 Hydrogeochemical Characteristics of Groundwater in Kumbakonam Taluk, Thanjavur District, Tamil Nadu T. Thamilarasan, N. Naganathan and K. Sankar Department of Industries and Earth Sciences, Tamil University, Thanjavur-10 [email protected] Abstract:-Kumbakonam is a well developed maritime district of Tamil Nadu. Groundwater has been the mainstay for domestic needs of more than 80% of population in the district. Dug wells with a density of around 150 per sq km are the major groundwater based structures along the surface level. Groundwater has been the principle source of water supply for the Kumbakonam town and along the urban area. The groundwater withdrawals need be regulated to avoid any possible seawater ingress. Characterization by factor analysis of hydrochemistry of Kumbakonam Taluk has been attempted in this paper. Factor analysis assumes that observed variables are products of linear combinations of some few underlying source variable known as factors. Factor analysis has not been a major tool in the study of groundwater geochemistry as has been demonstrated in several studies (Lawrence and Upchurce, 1983; Olobaniyi and Owoyemi, 2006; Aris et al. 2007; Gallardo and Marui, 2007; Ramesh Kumar and Figure.1 Location Map. Riyazuddin, 2008). The present study was set to determine has factors that significantly control the II. DRAINAGE chemistry of groundwater in the phreatic aquifers of Kumbakonam taluk. Kumbakonam Taluk are found to the sub-dedritic pattern. A drainage pattern in which the stream is oriented in a similar direction, but which lacks the regularity of the parallel Key words:-Hydro Geochemistry, Formula, SAR, RSC, pattern may be designated as sub-parallel. -
Indian Archaeology 1985-86 a Review
INDIAN ARCHAEOLOGY 1985-86 —A REVIEW EDITED BY JAGAT PATI JOSHI Director General Archaeological Survey of India ARCHAEOLOGICAL SURVEY OF INDIA GOVERNMENT OF INDIA NEW DELHI 1990 Cover : Excavated remains at Sanghol © 1990 ARCHAEOLOGICAL SURVEY OF INDIA GOVERNMENT OF INDIA Price: Rs. 150.00 PRINTED AT VAP ENTERPRISES, H-24 GREEN PARK EXTENSION, NEW DELHI-1 10024 © 669606, 656787 PREFACE In the process of clearing the backlog of publications of the Archaeological Survey of India, I am happy to place before the readers and scholars, Indian Archaeology 1985-86— A Review. Like its earlier issues, it incorporates matter on archaeological activities in the country during 1985-86 besides a summary of results of excavations at Hamad Town, Bahrain, where a team of archaeological experts of Archaeological Survey of India carried out excavations at the invitation of Government of Bahrain. The succeeding issues of the Review are also under preparation. However, I would like to add that since 1989 to June 1990, Archaeological Survey of India has been hectically engaged in bringing out besides the present issue of Indian Ar- chaeology 1985-86—A Review, Temples of the Pratihara Period in Central India, Temples of Khajuraho Vol. I & II, Excavations at Surkotada, Epigraphia Indica Vol.41 and Gupta Inscriptions of Bagh Caves. As usual for this issue of Indian Archaeology the matter was received from various sources and I gratefully acknowledge the cooperation of those whose contributions have been utilised here. The delay in the publication of this issue is regretted and I apologise for any inaccuracy which may have crept in sorting out, compiling and editing the material for this issue. -
