    Sun Myung Moon’s Closely Associated Entities This is the latest revision of a list originally created in June 1981 by the Ex-Moon Organization. The list contains the names of companies owned, operated, and/or controlled by the Moon organization or Moon followers and has been compiled by us based on information available to us. We are interested in obtaining additional information and making additions, revisions, and corrections. If you have information you wish to bring to our attention, please do so by contacting us. This list is for information only, so the public can make an informed decision whether they want to do business with companies closely associated with the Unification Movement or Sun Myung Moon followers. In the early days of the Unification Movement Moon followers lived in centers and worked in a handful of businesses controlled by the Movement hierarchy. Businesses were started to support the growing Movement and to further Moon's goals. Within the Movement, building businesses has been referred to as “building a material foundation.” As the Movement grew, the centers could not hold all the members and a shift took place as members moved from the centers into the surrounding communities. Businesses operated by members employ the members and allow them to live outside the centers relieving the Movement of the burden of financially supporting members. Operating businesses is an excellent way of supporting Moon's goals. Not only do they relieve the Movement of providing for members, the members who control the businesses can make tax-free donations to nonprofits associated with the Movement instead of making a profit and paying taxes on the profit.

    Summary Report & Reflections ‘The Life and Legacy of SMM and the Unification Movements in Scholarly Perspective’ Faculty of Comparative Study of Religion and Humanism (FVG) Antwerp, Belgium 29-30 May 2017 __________________________________________________________________ Organized by: The European Observatory of Religion and Secularism (Laïcité) in partnership with Faculty of Comparative Study of Religion and Humanism (FVG), CESNUR & CLIMAS (Bordeaux) This is a summary-report and a reflection on the recent conference in Antwerp, Belgium. The text is a compilation of impressions and reflections by Dr. Andrew Wilson, Dr. Mike Mickler, Dan Fefferman, Hugo Veracx, Peter Zoehrer and Catriona Valenta. The number of participants (including scholars & organizers) was around 40: 15 persons belonging to Sanctuary Church, 8 participants from the Preston (H1) group, 8 from FFWPU and 9 neutral (ex-members, scholars, etc.). The conference was devoted almost exclusively to examining the background and development of the schisms that have emerged in the Unification Movement since the death of the founder. DAY ONE The first day was consistent with the conference theme of the „Life and legacy of Sun Myung Moon and Unification Movements“ in a scholarly perspective. Dr. Eileen Barker led off with an excellent keynote address titled "The Unification Church: A Kaleidoscopic History." She looked at the UM as a religious movement, a spiritual movement, a charismatic movement, a messianic movement, a millenarian movement, a utopian movement, a political movement, a financial-business movement, a criminal movement, a sectarian movement, a denominationalizing movement, and a schismatic movement. It was a good introduction to the conference as a whole. Alexa Blonner followed with a very excellent presentation on the UM's antecedents in Neo-Confucian thought and also the ways in which the UM went beyond that heritage.

Just like the Israelites who tried to be multi-cultural and were absorbed into the Assyrian culture. The Bible has real-life stories to guide us. We will now come to those cults that mix in elements from other religions and make claims that are simply absurd from the Christian perspective. Nevertheless, they find enough followers, particularly among those who feel spiritually needy but are quite distant from the Christian faith. They promise them a spiritual solution to their problem, inner healing, and true fellowship – and all this sounds so much more believable than the preaching of the many lifeless Christian churches. They are usually backed up by a powerful organizational structure with a lot of financial support, and a strong public presence – particularly on the World Wide Web, which they use to recruit new members. Today, we want to talk about Sun Myung Moon’s Holy Spirit Association for the Unification of World Christianity, briefly called the Unification Church or sometimes simply the Moonies. They claim that We now have the means to heal all modern-day human problems, exalt every human soul, and bring the kingdom of God within the reach of every man. According to Reverend Sun Myung Moon, a title he gave to himself when he founded his church in 1954, this all-embracing claim is based on new revelations from God which were given to him in order to “complete the task of establishing God’s kingdom on earth and bringing piece to mankind”.

Afe Adogame finds that this book is a must-read for scholars of NRMs, historians of religion, social scientists, and policy makers. Revisionism and Diversification in New Religious Movements. Eileen Barker (ed.). Ashgate. 2013. Find this book: New religious movements (NRMs) – and in actual fact any religious phenomena – is hardly static and unchanging, but dynamic and constantly in flux. Religion is not a museum piece nor a tourist-trod monument, but a vibrant force in people’s lived experiences and expressions. This collection of 17 essays considers the different ways in which certain practices in NRMs change or become neglected as the movements themselves develop or fade away. The essays demonstrate the ways in which ‘religious realities are actually constructed and reconstructed’ (p. 260), and reflect a diversity of approaches, each providing a critical, scholarly perspective. Contributors include academics writing with a multidisciplinary focus, as well as current and ex-members of NRMs, and advocates of ‘cult awareness’. This selection of contributors is a real strength of the collection. By exploring NRMs beyond their foundational histories, with a special focus on dynamics of change, resilience and transformation of beliefs and rituals, and schisms and diversification, the contributors catapult the study of NRMs to a new level of discourse.
