2010 AVCA ALL-AMERICA TEAMS ANNOUNCED FOR DIVISION I WOMEN'S

Kansas City, Mo. (December 15, 2010) - The American Volleyball Coaches Association (AVCA) is proud to announce the 30th annual AVCA Division I All-America Teams for women's volleyball. The awards will be presented Dec. 17, 2010, in Kansas City, Mo. at the AVCA All-America/Players of the Year Banquet presented by Zamst. The event is held in conjunction with the 2010 AVCA Convention.

Each of the three AVCA All-America Teams is comprised of 14 athletes. The Division I AVCA National Player of the Year will be announced on Dec. 17 at the AVCA All-America/Players of the Year Banquet presented by Zamst.

Stanford University outside hitter Alix Klineman headlines this year’s selections, as she was the only four-time AVCA All- America honoree on any of the three teams. Repeat First-Team selections from a season ago include Penn State University right side hitter Blair Brown, University of Hawai’i outside hitter Kanani Danielson, Stanford setter/hitter Cassidy Lichtman and Penn State middle blocker Arielle Wilson.

Of all of the First-Team honorees, all but two have previously garnered AVCA All-America recognition during their careers, with The University of Texas middle blocker and the University of California outside hitter Tarah Murrey snagging their first-ever honors. A total of 26 athletes –nearly two-thirds of this year’s recipients – representing the three teams are first-time AVCA All-America selections.

The selections were made by the AVCA Division I All-America Committee: chair – Keylor Chan, Northwestern; Joe Getzin, Mississippi; Christy Johnson-Lynch, Iowa State; Mike Jordan, New Mexico State; Anne Kordes, Saint Louis; Lee Maes, Virginia; Andrew Palileo, Washington State; Lisa Seifert, Southern Methodist. The AVCA Awards Chair is Dayton head volleyball coach Kelly Sheffield.

Rachael Adams, a 6-2 middle blocker for The University of Texas, is a junior from Cincinnati, Ohio. The All-Big 12 First-Team honoree is ranked first in the nation in hitting percentage and is ranked among the top of the Big 12 in blocks per set. After being a key cog in the Longhorns’ 27-5 record this far and a berth in the NCAA semifinals, Adams picks up AVCA All-America honors for the first time.

Ashley Benson, a 6-3 middle blocker for Indiana University, is a senior from Bloomington, Ind. The three-time All-Big Ten selection is ranked among the top in the nation for both hitting efficiency and blocks per set and is among the top of the Big Ten in hitting efficiency, blocks, points and kills per set. After helping guide the Hoosiers to their first Sweet 16 appearance in the program’s history, Benson now takes home her second AVCA All-America accolade.

Blair Brown, a 6-5 right side hitter for Penn State University, is a senior from Purcellville, Va. The Big-Ten Player of the Year and three-time All-Big Ten honoree is ranked among the top in the nation for kills per set. Brown assisted the Nittany Lions to their eighth consecutive Big Ten title and fourteenth overall. This marks the third straight AVCA All-America honor for Brown.

Kanani Danielson, a 5-10 outside hitter for the University of Hawai’i, is a junior from Ewa Beach, Hawai’i. Named the WAC Player of the Year for the second year in a row, Danielson is ranked nationally for kills per set and became the 17th player in the school’s history to pass the 1,000 kill milestone. Danielson is now a three-time AVCA All-American.

Brooke Delano, a 6-4 middle blocker for the Nebraska University, is a junior from Bellevue, Neb. Delano, an All-Big 12 First-Team selection, is among the best in the nation in the categories of hitting percentage and blocks per set and helped guide Nebraska to their twelfth Big 12 title this season. Just the fourth attacker in NU history to end the season with a hitting percentage over .400, Delano nabs AVCA All-America honors for the second time.

Juliann Faucette, a 6-2 outside hitter for the University of Texas, is a senior from San Diego, Calif. Named the Big 12 Volleyball Player of the Year, Faucette is ranked among the top in the nation for kills per set and is a top leader in the conference for points and kills per set. The sparkplug has guided the Longhorns to their second straight NCAA semifinal appearance and is now an AVCA All-American for the third time.

Victoria Henson, a 5-11 outside hitter for Iowa State University, is a senior from Leavenworth, Kan. The three-time Big 12 First-Team selection led the Big 12 in kills and points per set while holding one of the nation’s top spots for kills per set. In addition, Henson broke the Cyclone record for all-time kills and is receiving AVCA All-America honors for the second straight year.

Alex Jupiter, a 6-3 outside hitter for the University of Southern California, is a junior from Paris, France. The two-time Pac-10 All-Conference selection is ranked among the top in the nation for kills per set and has led the Women of Troy to an appearance in the NCAA semifinals. Jupiter was named the Most Outstanding Player at the Hawaiian Airlines Wahine Volleyball Classic, while also being the first USC athlete to earn Sports Imports/AVCA National Player of the Week honors twice during a season. Jupiter is now a two-time AVCA All-American.

Alix Klineman, a 6-4 outside hitter for Stanford University, is a senior from Manhattan Beach, Calif. The 2010 Pac-10 Player of the Year and a four-time All-Pac-10 honoree, Klineman is ranked among the best in the nation for hitting percentage and kills per set. Klineman is the fourth player in program history to pass the 1,900-kill mark and the eighth player to achieve both 1,000 career kills and digs. She receives AVCA All- America honors for the fourth consecutive year.

Cassidy Lichtman, a 6-1 setter/hitter for Stanford University, is a senior from Poway, Calif. The two-time Pac-10 All-Conference honoree helped lead the Cardinal to their fifth straight Pac-10 Championship and assisted in the advancement to their fourth Pacific Regional Final in the past five years. This marks the second time Lichtman has received AVCA All-America honors.

Carli Lloyd, a 5-11 setter for the University of California, is a senior from Bonsall, Calif. A national leader in assists per set, Lloyd guided the Golden Bears to their first Pac-10 title. The two-time Pac-10 All-Conference selection is ranked among the top in the conference for assists and is the only setter to tap into Cal’s all-time top-10 for career blocks. This is the third consecutive year Lloyd has received AVCA All-America honors.

Kelly Murphy, a 6-2 setter/hitter for the University of Florida, is a junior from Wilmington, Ill. The 2010 SEC Player of the Year and two-time First-Team All-SEC selection is among the nation’s leaders in hitting percentage and aces per set. Assisting the Gators to clinch the SEC title, Murphy tallied seven triple-doubles and 22 double-doubles throughout the season. This is the third consecutive year Murphy has received AVCA All-America honors.

Tarah Murrey, a 6-3 outside hitter for the University of California, is a junior from El Cerrito, Calif. The two-time All-Pac 10 honoree is ranked nationally for kills per set and is ranked second in the conference for both kills and points per set. After helping the Golden Bears to their first Pac- 10 title, this marks the first time Murrey has received AVCA All-America honors.

Arielle Wilson, a 6-3 middle blocker for Penn State University, is a senior from Broadview, Ill. A three-time All-Big Ten honoree, Wilson is ranked among the top in the nation for hitting percentage and is only the fifth player at Penn State history and the 10th in Big Ten lore to pass the 600-mark in blocks. Helping the Nittany Lions on their quest for a fourth straight national title, this is the third time Wilson has received AVCA All-America honors.

AVCA Second-Team All-America

Kendall Bateman, a 5-11 setter for the University of Southern California, is a junior from Manhattan Beach, Calif. She helped propel the Women of Troy to a berth in the NCAA Tournament semifinals with a 29-4 record to date, and currently leads the Pac-10 in assists per set. It is the first time Bateman has garnered AVCA All-America acclaim.

Kindra Carlson, a 6-1 right side hitter for the University of Washington, is a senior from Eaton, Colo. She’s nationally ranked in points per set while averaging career highs in kills, points and hitting percentage. With the strong season she had, she was able to move into ninth in UW history in career kills. This is her second consecutive AVCA Second-Team All-America award.

Lindsay Fletemier, a 6-6 middle blocker for the University of Dayton, is a senior from Garden City, Mich. She ranks among the national leaders in both blocks per set and hitting percentage, helping the Flyers to an Atlantic-10 title and an appearance in the NCAA Tournament second round. She led the league in hitting percentage and blocks per set and now earns her secondAVCA All-America distinction.

Tyler Henderson, a 5-10 outside hitter for the University of Tulsa, is a sophomore from Oklahoma City, Okla. Henderson led her to team to a 31-3 record, a Conference USA title and an appearance in the NCAA Tournament second round, en route to setting Tulsa, Conference USA and NCAA records for kills and kills per set. This is the C-USA Player of the Year’s first time receiving All-America honors.

Brittany Hewitt, a 6-3 middle blocker for the University of Hawai’i, is a sophomore from Eagle, Idaho. She led the nation in blocks per set as the Rainbow Wahine advanced to the second round of the NCAA Tournament. Hewitt broke a couple of program records this year with 16 blocks against San Diego and a .917 hitting percentage with 11 kills on just 12 attempts against New Mexico State. It is her first time receiving AVCA All-America honors.

Lindsey Licht, a 6-5 right side hitter for the University of Nebraska, is a senior from Aurora, Colo. She led her team to the NCAA Tournament regional semifinals with a 29-3 overall record. Licht set career highs in kills and blocks per set and hitting percentage, and pounded a career-best 18 kills against Florida. Licht takes home an AVCA All-America award for the first time.

Deja McClendon, a 6-1 outside hitter for Penn State University, is a freshman from Louisville, Ky. She helped lead Penn State to an appearance in the NCAA Tournament semifinals and a Big 10 championship. McClendon became the fifth Nittany Lion to be named the AVCA Region Freshman of the Year and was a four-time Big 10 Freshman of the Week. She ranks second on the team in kills, and earns her first career AVCA All-America nod.

Sabel Moffett, a 6-0 middle blocker for Northwestern University, is a senior from Temecula, Calif. She ranks third in the Big Ten in blocks per set, en route to becoming the fourth player in program history to surpass 500 career blocks. Moffet also became the second player in program history to earn All-Big Ten First-Team honors in consecutive seasons. She now adds her first AVCA All-America honor to her resume.

Stephanie Niemer, a 6-2 outside hitter for the University of Cincinnati, is a senior from Erlanger, Ky. The 2010 BIG EAST Player of the Year finished the season ranked fourth in the NCAA in kills per set and third in points per set. She helped guide her Bearcats to a regular season BIG EAST championship and an appearance in the NCAA Tournament. Niemer takes home her first AVCA All-America award.

Bre Payton, a 5-9 setter for the University of Northern Iowa, is a junior from Waterloo, Iowa. Payton was named Missouri Valley Conference Player of the Year and earned a spot on the MVC All-Tournament team. Heading into the NCAA Tournament, the Panthers averaged 15.24 assists per set, which was first amongst the tournament teams. This is her first AVCA All-America honor.

Becky Perry, a 6-2 outside hitter for the University of Washington, is a senior from Austin, Texas. She finished amongst the top-10 in the Pac-10 in kills per set and third in aces per set, while the Huskies advanced to the NCAA Tournament quarterfinals. Perry also set personal season-bests in kills, aces and digs. This is her first time being tabbed an AVCA All-American.

Colleen Ward, a 6-2 outside hitter for the University of Illinois, is a junior from Naperville, Ill. Ward guided her team to the third round of the NCAA Tournament, and at the time of their exit, she led the tournament in kills at 6.29 per set. She was named to the All- Tournament teams at the Time Warner Cable Invitational, the Ameritas Players Challenge and at the Big Ten/BIG EAST Challenge. The third-ranked Big Ten player in kills and points earns her first appearance as an AVCA All-American.

Hannah Werth, a 6-1 outside hitter for the University of Nebraska, is a sophomore from Springfield, Ill. Winners of the Big 12 regular season title, the Huskers advanced to the third round of the NCAA Tournament. After being named the Central Region Freshman of the Year in 2009, Werth took home Big 12 Defensive Player of the Year honors in 2010 and was also an All-Big 12 nod. This is her first AVCA All-America distinction.

Lexi Zimmerman, a 5-10 setter for the University of Michigan, is a senior from Barrington, Ill. Zimmerman led the Wolverines in assists for the fourth consecutive season, finishing with a program record 5,903 helpers, also the sixth-most in Big Ten history. In addition, she ended her career in No. 1 in Michigan history with 140 appearances while earning All-Big Ten honors. This marks the third time she’s taken home AVCA All-America accolades.

AVCA Third-Team All-America

Gabi Ailes, a 5-7 libero for Stanford University, is a senior from Bellevue, Neb. Ailes broke every Stanford digs record on the way to the team reaching the NCAA Tournament quarterfinals. With 2,111 career digs, she became just the seventh Pac-10 player to record over 2,000 digs, placing her fourth all-time in conference history. This is Ailes’ first time being named an AVCA All-American.

Brianne Barker, a 5-9 setter for the University of Oklahoma, is a junior from Amarillo, Texas. An All-Big 12 First-Team selection, Barker led the Sooners to the third round of the NCAA Tournament with a23-11 record, while ranking fourth in the Big 12 in assists per set. Barker, who also helped Oklahoma to the league’s fourth-best team hitting percentage, picks up her first AVCA All-America honor.

Michelle Bartsch, a 6-3 right side hitter for the University of Illinois, is a junior from Maryville, Ill. A key component to the Illini’s success this season, Bartsch ranked among the league’s top-ten in both kills and points per set, while helping Illinois advance to the NCAA Tournament third round. An All-Big Ten selection, Bartsch is a first-time AVCA All-American.

Ellie Blankenship, a 5-10 libero for the University of Northern Iowa, is a senior from Cedar Rapids, Iowa. Ranking nationally in digs per set, Blankenship was a key figure in leading the Panthers to an appearance in the NCAA Tournament. She became just the eighth player in Division I history to record over 2,500 digs, while holding UNI records for career digs and digs per set in a season. Blankenship was also a first-time all-conference selection and has now earned AVCA All-America honors for the first time.

Lane Carico, a 5-11 outside hitter for the University of Miami, is a junior from Manhattan Beach, Calif. She was the only ACC player to register 400 kills and 400 digs in the 2010 regular season and led the ACC in double-doubles with 25, helping her Hurricanes to their second consecutive berth in the NCAA Tournament. This is her first time earning All-America accolades.

Kellie Catanach, a 6-2 setter for Duke University, is a junior from Tampa, Fla. She led the Blue Devils to their second-ever appearance in the NCAA Elite Eight and ended the season by recording at least 30 assists in 24 consecutive matches. She led the ACC and also ranked nationally in assists per set. The ACC Player of the Year is receiving AVCA All-America honors for the first time.

Nikki Fowler, a 6-2 right side hitter for the University of Tennessee, is a senior from Dallas, Texas. On their way to becoming the best offense in school history, posting a record .291 hitting percentage, Fowler and the Lady Vols recorded their most wins with 25 since 2004. Fowler ends her career among the top-10 in seven UT career categories. Fowler becomes a first-time AVCA All-American.

Jaclyn Hart, a 6-1setter for Purdue University, is a senior from Palos Hills, Ill. An All-Big Ten selection, Hart led the Boilermakers on an exhilarating run to the NCAA Tournament quarterfinals in 2010. She ranked among the nation’s leaders in assists per set and helped Purdue to a 24-11 in 2010. She is now a first-time AVCA All-American.

Hillary Haen, a 5-10 setter for the University of Illinois, is a senior from Crystal Lake, Ill. She sits fourth on Illinois’ all-time career assists list, and her 2010 single-season total of 1,418 helpers is eighth all-time. Ranking in the top-20 nationally and first in the Big Ten in assists per set, Haen earned a spot on the All-Big Ten Team. She garners AVCA All-America honors for the first time.

Alex Hunt, a 6-0 outside hitter for the University of Michigan, is a junior from Granger, Ind. Hunt was a huge weapon for the Wolverines this season as she led the Big Ten in kills and points per set, also ranking nationally in the former, while ranking No. 2 in the conference from behind the service line, as well. An All-Big Ten selection this season, Hunt picks up her first AVCA All-America honor.

Jennifer Keddy, a 6-4 middle blocker for Cal Poly, is a sophomore from Missoula, Mont. A First-Team All-Big West honoree, Keddy sat atop the league leaders in hitting percentage, while also ranking in the top-10 in kills and points per set. Keddy, who helped the Mustangs to a 22-7 record in 2010, is now a first-time AVCA All-American.

Ashley Mass, a 5-8 libero for Iowa State University, is a senior from Muskego, Wis. Mass helped guide the Cyclones to their fifth consecutive NCAA Tournament appearance. Ranking nationally in digs per set, Mass finished her career with 2,294 digs, more than 250 ahead of any Big 12 player in conference history. This is her third straight AVCA All-America honor.

Regina Thomas, a 6-0 middle blocker for the University of Mississippi, is a junior from Richardson, Texas. Thomas had a big year for the Rebels this season, as she led the SEC in hitting percentage and was third in blocks per set, earning her a spot on the All-SEC First- Team. This is the first time Thomas, who helped Ole Miss reach the NCAA Tournament, has earned AVCA All-America honors.

Lauren Williams, a 6-4 middle blocker for the University of Southern California, is a junior from Houston, Texas. Williams was a key cog for the Women of Troy this season, helping the squad to a 29-4 record and a spot in the NCAA semifinals. After averaging nearly 2.50 kills and one block per set, Williams was honored as an All-Pac-10 recipient. This marks Williams’ first AVCA All-America nod.
