The U.S. women put up a huge block against Japan in the inaugural USA Volleyball Cup last weekend. “Chalk talk” with Karch at 5:30…come early and get some pointers from USA head coach Karch Kiraly before the scrimmage starts. USA Volleyball Cup Launches with 3 Sellouts The USA women’s team played Japan in the inaugural event in the new USA Volleyball Cup which took place July 10, 12 and 13 at UC San Diego, CSU Long Beach, and JSerra High School in San Juan Capistrano. The USA defeated Japan in all three matches, but the action in each was “nailbitingly” close. Japan — ranked No 3 in the world — played incredible defense, time after time returning the powerful spikes of the US players. The USA Volleyball Cup is a new initiative that will draw elite teams to the United States each year to compete in a tour series with both the U.S. Men’s and Women’s National Volleyball Teams. Giving something back… For a few years now, the USA Men’s and Women’s National Teams have been training here in Southern California at the American Sports Centers in Anaheim. The new coaches of the teams, John Speraw and Karch Kiraly, would like to take advantage of being in the center of this volleyball hotbed and create a strong connection to the local volleyball community. In order to do this, a number of exciting new initiatives have been put in place. The theme is “USA Volleyball — Giving Something Back!”. Over the last several months we have sent National Team players out to speak to junior club players; held free intra-squad scrimmages with thousands of fans in attendance; created a contest for junior players to win free coaching sessions with the National Team; and launched a USA Volleyball Cup Facebook page with content relevant to junior players. We’re enjoying a closer relationship with local junior clubs and getting a lot of positive feedback about these new initiatives. The USA Volleyball Cup is the pinnacle of this effort. These major events will be more heavily promoted than in the past, attracting broadcasters and signifi cant new sponsors for USA Volleyball. For example, intensive radio promotion of this inaugural series has reached 600,000 people, and the local press has been lending active support. The sport of volleyball has tremendous untapped potential and we intend to unlock this as the Teams prepare for their Gold Medal quests in Brazil in 2016. USA Women’s National Team Supports Starlings 80 Junior High girls in Anaheim came out to the American Sports Center this spring to participate in the fi rst Starlings Anaheim volleyball program. Starlings is a non-profi t organization founded in 1996 by Byron Shewman, a former Men’s National team player, in order to provide girls from lower-income, ethnically diverse inner city environments a chance to play club volleyball. Starlings programs have reached 30,000 girls in 40 cities all over America. 300 girls have received college scholarships as a result of participating. In Anaheim, where the Women’s National Team trains, Head Coach Karch Kiraly thought it would be a good idea for the players to give something back to the community that generously hosts them. The players freely gave of their time and there were 10 National Team players at each practice, two times a week for 8 weeks. A team was selected from the 80 girls to participate in the annual Starlings National event which was help in San Diego late June. The reaction from the participating girls has been overwhelming and the program has also generated newspaper articles and the recognition of the City of Anaheim. It is planned to expand the program next fall. Offi cial site: usavolleyball.org /USAVBall @USA_Volleyball theusavolleyball.
