SLS 19RS-2056 ORIGINAL 2019 Regular Session SENATE CONCURRENT RESOLUTION NO. 126 BY SENATOR PEACOCK COMMENDATIONS. Commends the United States Women's National Volleyball Team and welcomes them to the Team USA FIVB Volleyball Qualification Tournament to be held in Shreveport. 1 A CONCURRENT RESOLUTION 2 To commend the United States Women's National Volleyball Team as it competes in the 3 Team USA FIVB Volleyball Intercontinental Olympic Qualification Tournament for 4 the 2020 Olympic Games and welcomes them to the CenturyLink Center in 5 Shreveport in August, 2019. 6 WHEREAS, the USA Women's Volleyball Team, ranked third in the world, will 7 compete against teams from Argentina, Bulgaria, and Kazakhstan in round-robin play with 8 the winner earning a berth in the 2020 Tokyo Olympic Games; and 9 WHEREAS, this is the first occurrence when the United States has been granted 10 home-court advantage by the international federation that shall result in thousands of 11 American fans cheering Team USA at the most important volleyball Olympic qualifier in 12 the United States; and 13 WHEREAS, the CenturyLink Center will host the competitions from August 2 14 through August 4, 2019, and all three USA matches will be broadcast live on the NBC 15 Sports Network and the Olympic Channel, an internet television service; and 16 WHEREAS, the Shreveport-Bossier City Sports Commission, in cooperation with 17 local officials, the Caddo Parish Commission, and the Bossier Parish Police Jury, 18 coordinated efforts along with the USA Volleyball organization to make this tournament Page 1 of 3 SLS 19RS-2056 ORIGINAL SCR NO. 126 1 location possible; and 2 WHEREAS, with each nation only being allowed to participate in two tournaments 3 to qualify for the 2020 Olympic Games, this qualifier in Shreveport-Bossier City will play 4 a critical role for Team USA hopefuls to compete in Tokyo, Japan; and 5 WHEREAS, the USA Women's National Volleyball Team is a member of the 6 Fédération Internationale de Volleyball (FIVB), the global governing body of the sport; and 7 WHEREAS, Head Coach Karch Kiraly compiled a preliminary roster of thirty 8 players that include Lauren Carlini, Micha Hancock, Carli Lloyd, Jordyn Poulter, Tita Akiu, 9 Megan Courtney, Mary Lake, Justine Wong-Orantes, Rachael Adams, Tori Dixon, 10 Lauren Gibbemeyer, Chiaka Ogbogu, Dana Rettke, Hannah Tapp, Paige Tapp, 11 Haleigh Washington, Michelle Bartsch-Hackley, Mikaela Foecke, Kim Hill, Madi Kingdon 12 Rishel, Jordan Larson, Simone Lee, Kelsey Robinson, Kadie Rolfzen, Sarah Wilhite Parsons, 13 Danielle Cuttino, Annie Drews, Karsta Lowe, Krystal Rivers, and Jordan Thompson; and 14 WHEREAS, the USA is the only country to have medaled in each of the last three 15 Olympic Games in women's indoor volleyball having won silver in 2008 and 2012 followed 16 by winning bronze in 2016; and 17 WHEREAS, the state of Louisiana has produced an Olympic volleyball champion, 18 Danielle Scott, a Baton Rouge native and graduate of Woodlawn High School who is the 19 single female player to compete in five Olympic games for indoor volleyball having earned 20 silver medals in 2008 and 2012; she has been inducted into the Louisiana High School 21 Athletic Association Hall of Fame and into the International Volleyball Hall of Fame. 22 THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the Legislature of Louisiana does hereby 23 commend the United States Women's National Volleyball Team as they compete in the 24 Team USA FIVB Volleyball Intercontinental Olympic Qualification Tournament. 25 BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Legislature of Louisiana does hereby 26 welcome the USA Women's National Volleyball Team, its fans, and competitors to 27 experience the hospitality of the Shreveport-Bossier region in Northwest Louisiana. 28 BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that a copy of this Resolution be transmitted to the 29 Honorable Lorenz Walker, mayor of Bossier City; the Honorable Adrian Perkins, mayor of 30 the city of Shreveport; Mr. Kelly Wells, executive director of the Shreveport-Bossier Sports Page 2 of 3 SLS 19RS-2056 ORIGINAL SCR NO. 126 1 Commission; Stormy Gage-Watts, president of the Caddo Parish Commission; and 2 Doug Rimmer, president of the Bossier Parish Police Jury.
