THE COMMISSIONER: Mr Anis, as I was trying to explain the SABLs, the reason why the SABLs were legislated under sections 11 and 102 is basically to allow landowners to be involved in business ventures relating to their land. This 20 was a way in which landowners could mobilize themselves in a way to be able to engage in activities like commercial cash crops like oil palm, cocoa, things of this nature and so the SABL was done. Normally, this is initiated by the landowners themselves through the Department of Lands.

This paper explores some varieties of indigenous knowledge, how they are transmitted and their wider implications for sustainable development. Indigenous knowledge is defined as the authentic body of knowledge that humans possess about the utility of their surrounding and how human creativity and judgments in the use of nature benefits both the people and their world. The paper illustrates how the Lavongai custodians of indigenous knowledge have been an inseparable part of their natural environment through the ages for the sustenance and sustainability of their society. Key words: indigenous knowledge, sustainable development, mythology, community benefit, spiritual basis Introduction The Pacific Ocean occupies three quarters of the earth’s surface and has been home to numerous self-reliant communities for thousands of years. The communities have thrived through the centuries using various elements of their environment and the accumulated knowledge of their collective human experience for their survival. One such community in this region lives on Lavongai Island (also known as New Hanover) within the New Ireland Province of Papua New Guinea. There can be found a reservoir of indigenous knowledge developed by its ancient peoples for the sustenance and sustainability of their society. The aim of this paper is to highlight four examples of indigenous knowledge from Lavongai Island by portraying how this knowledge has worked in unison and contributed to the sustainability of the environment and sustenance of its inhabitants over the years.

The species, now in the genus Moho, was first collected by Henry Palmer on Molokai Island, Ha- waii, and named by Rothschild for C.R. Bishop, founder of the Bernice P. Bishop Museum in Honolulu. Bishop’s ’O’o, last seen 2011 on Molokai in 1904, is now considered extinct.
