If you are supporting or installing prod- ucts, you will need access to technical support or documentation for products you might not have purchased. Over the years, I have compiled a list of companies whose products are popular or whose products I have found to work exceptionally well. I use these contacts regularly to provide informa- tion and components that enable me to support PC systems effectively. Many of these companies have been mentioned in this book, but others not specifically mentioned have been added here. These companies carry many computer products you will have contact with or that I simply recommend. I have tried to list as many vendors as possible. These vendors are important in day-to-day work with PC systems and can supply documentation for your components, provide parts and service, and be used as a source for new equipment and software. This list is as up-to-date as possible, but companies move or go out of business all the time. If you find any information in this list that is no longer accurate, please leave me a message at [email protected]. Although originally exclusively the domain of computer enthusiasts, today almost all companies use Internet Web sites to provide a high level of technical support. Through a company-run Web site, you can receive detailed technical support on that company’s products and download product literature and reference materials. I usually find the level of online support is superior to traditional phone sup- port, especially because I don’t have to wait on hold! A few companies still provide BBS support, but the popularity of the Web has caused most companies to discontinue their BBS support. With each company listing, I have included both standard phone numbers and 800 numbers where possible, so U.S. and international readers can easily contact these companies. Also included are fax numbers, Web site addresses, and BBS numbers (where available). I have not included any communi- cations parameter settings, but virtually all BBS systems support 28.8K (V.34) connections. Some companies run a FAXback system, an automated system through which you can request product and technical information to be sent directly to your own fax machine. FAXback systems are an excel- lent way to get immediate documentation and technical support. If you discover any such information that I have not included, please email me detailing what you have found. Finally, each listing includes a short description of the products or services the company provides. I use this vendor list constantly; I hope you find it as useful as I do! As an improvement to this 15th Edition, I’ve added a categorical listing of products and services at the end of this list. If you need to find a product but don’t know which company makes it, look up the category at the end of the vendor list, find the vendor(s) that makes or sells this type of product, and then look up the contact information. 99 1738 NEW DVD 4 6/25/04 10:39 AM Page 3 Vendor List 3 #1-PC Diagnostics Company (the ESD Division of Windsor Technologies, Inc.) 130 Alto Street San Rafael, CA 94901 Phone 415-456-2200 Fax 415-456-2244 Web www.tufftest.com Email [email protected] Manufactures #1-TuffTEST-Pro, an excellent high-end, service-technician-level, PC diagnostics, and troubleshooting program that can be downloaded from its Web site. • Hardware Installation
    1. Please read the users guide before proceeding with your installations. Serious damage may occur if the procedure is not followed properly. 2. AGP cards running at 3.3v are not supported. Only AGP cards running at 1.5v (most 4x or 8x AGP cards) are supported on this motherboard. 3. Please make sure that your memory modules are inserted correctly. They can go in only one way, and should fit completely in the socket without sticking out. Failure to do so will damage your motherboard and memory module. 4. An ATX12V power supply is required for the system to operate normally. (Preferably 350 watts for minimal loading or 400 watts for fully loaded system). 5. If you have any problem getting your system to work, please follow the troubleshooting tips in your user manual. 6. Some companies refer to the motherboard as a system board or planar. The terms motherboard, main board, system board, and planar are interchangeable, although I prefer the motherboard designation. This chapter examines the various types of motherboards available and those components typically contained on the motherboard and motherboard interface connectors. Several common form factors are used for PC motherboards. The form factor refers to the physical dimensions (size and shape) as well as certain connector, screw hole, and other positions that dictate into which type of case the board will fit. Some are true standards (meaning that all boards with that form factor are interchangeable), whereas others are not standardized enough to allow for inter- changeability. Unfortunately, these nonstandard form factors preclude any easy upgrade or inexpen- sive replacement, which generally means they should be avoided. The more commonly known PC motherboard form factors include the following: Obsolete Form Factors Modern Form Factors All Others ■ Baby-AT ■ ATX ■ Fully proprietary designs ■ Full-size AT ■ micro-ATX (certain Compaq, Packard Bell, Hewlett-Packard, ■ ■ LPX (semiproprietary) Flex-ATX notebook/portable sys- ■ WTX (no longer in production) ■ Mini-ITX (flex-ATX tems, and so on) ■ ITX (flex-ATX variation, never variation) produced) ■ NLX Motherboards have evolved over the years from the original Baby-AT form factor boards used in the original IBM PC and XT to the current ATX and NLX boards used in most full-size desktop and tower systems.

  • Reassessing Client/Server Tools and Technologies Lawrence K
Previous 4-04-40 Reassessing Client/Server Tools and Technologies Lawrence K. Cooper John S. Whetstone Payoff Client/server computing has not yet realized its promise of faster applications development, reduced maintenance costs, and enterprise scalability. This article's review of client/server technologies from the perspective of whether they cause developers to focus more on the tool than on the business problem helps IS and business managers appreciate what each technology can and cannot do. Understanding that client/server computing is more a concept than a technology is key to the proper evaluation of the tools and strategies flooding the marketplace. Introduction During the past 10 years, client/server architecture and technologies have been hailed as spelling the demise of the mainframe-centric view of computing. Corporations purchased PC by the truckload and bought myriad development tools, languages, and frameworks for developers and users alike. Products with descriptions such as GUI-builders, front ends, gateways, back ends, middleware, and glue flooded the client/server marketplace. Applications were supposed to be able to be developed faster and maintenance costs were supposed to decrease. Clearly this has not been the case: Client/server computing has proven to be both a boon and a bust. Although it provides more flexibility, it requires more computing resources, faster networks, and higher maintenance. According to a recent Gartner study, client/server computing costs often exceed mainframe-centric computing by up to 70%. Client/server computing also poses an abundance of data security problems. Current technologies are at a middle stage between the rigorous structures of mainframes and the total openness implicit in many of the new architectures.

This preview contains the first section of that full-sized Agile book. While only a small portion, there’s enough here to get you started on the topic and be of value. It’s my Mini- mum Viable Product, and since it’s the “minimum,” I’m distribut- ing it for free among my current contacts and anyone else who asks for it until the full version is published. Though free, please respect my copyrights and do not post it or otherwise distribute the PDF. On a warm Sunday evening in 2017, I was driving to a church meeting with my son and brother-in-law. The former was asleep in the back seat, and the latter was asking me about my most recent consulting client. After I droned on for about five minutes about the successes and unfinished challenges, he said something like, “Well, Agile is popular everywhere now. In a few years, it will be something else.” The first part of his statement is correct: Agile is popular. Back in 2013, I did a survey on the relative popularity of Agile versus other business philosophies.
