PROPELLING HEALTHCARE IN MISSION MODE “We have indigenously developed state-of-the-art missile technology, making India self-reliant in the production of combat missiles and missile interceptors. It got realized through mission mode activity with a strong leadership and well managed workforce. The missile technology mission could be taken as a model for addressing the challenges in healthcare for the benefit of all citizens”. Dr.Vijay Kumar Saraswat, Hon’ble President of Sree Chitra Tirunal Institute for Medical Sciences and Technology (SCTIMST), Trivandrum, shares his experiences in missile development mission and suggests the lessons therein for the healthcare sector. Here are excerpts from his informal conversation with Dr.Srinivas Gopala and Dr.Manoj Komath. Sir, we see that your professional career has been devoted to missile development. How did you get introduced to this exotic field ? That happened in the Indian Institute of Science (IISc) Campus, when I enrolled for ME in 1970. I joined the Aeronautics Department for a course on Internal Combustion Engine. I did my Bachelors in Science and B Tech in Mechanical Engineering in my hometown, Gwalior, before coming down South to Bangalore. IISc is a different world where a student gets the rare exposure to exotic, state-of-the-art subjects. I studied ‘Rocketry’ as an elective. Sir, can you tell us about your entry into defence research ? That was through Campus selection in 1972 for the newly formed Defence Research and Development Laboratory in Hyderabad. It was set up under a special fund from the government for missile technology development. Only a few countries had that knowhow at that time and India was dependent on them for such weapons. -

Fri, 10 Jan 2020 Indian Navy to get first tranche of indigenously- built anti-submarine torpedo Varunastra soon The heavyweight torpedo Varunastra is a ship-launched, electrically-propelled underwater weapon equipped with one of the most advanced automatic and remote-controlled guidance systems By Ritesh K Srivastava New Delhi: The Indian Navy will soon receive the first tranche of indigenously-built heavyweight anti-submarine torpedo Varunastra, which is likely to add more firepower to India's marine defence capabilities. According to reports, the first tranche of torpedo Varunastra, which has been developed by the Naval Science and Technological Laboratory (NSTL), a premier laboratory of the DRDO, will be handed over to the Indian navy within four months. Its formal induction into the Indian Navy will catapult India into the elite club of eight countries possessing the capability to design and build such a naval defence system. The heavyweight torpedo Varunastra is a ship-launched, electrically-propelled underwater weapon equipped with one of the most advanced automatic and remote-controlled guidance systems. The weapon system uses its own intelligence in tracking the target. Capable of hitting stealth submarines underwater, the 1,500-kg Varunastra can carry a warhead weighing 250 kg and has an operational range of 40 km. The anti-submarine electric torpedo is seven to eight metres long with a diameter of 533 mm. According to the DRDO, the submarine, which can travel at a speed of 40 knots (74 km/h), can be launched both from ships and submarines. It has GPS-based locating aid, a unique feature in contemporary torpedoes in the world, according to the DRDO. -

Marine Nuclear Power: 1939 - 2018 Part 5: China, India, Japan & other nations Peter Lobner July 2018 1 Foreword In 2015, I compiled the first edition of this resource document to support a presentation I made in August 2015 to The Lyncean Group of San Diego (www.lynceans.org) commemorating the 60th anniversary of the world’s first “underway on nuclear power” by USS Nautilus on 17 January 1955. That presentation to the Lyncean Group, “60 years of Marine Nuclear Power: 1955 – 2015,” was my attempt to tell a complex story, starting from the early origins of the US Navy’s interest in marine nuclear propulsion in 1939, resetting the clock on 17 January 1955 with USS Nautilus’ historic first voyage, and then tracing the development and exploitation of marine nuclear power over the next 60 years in a remarkable variety of military and civilian vessels created by eight nations. In July 2018, I finished a complete update of the resource document and changed the title to, “Marine Nuclear Power: 1939 – 2018.” What you have here is Part 5: China, India, Japan and Other Nations. The Union Cabinet Approved Rs 6,000 Crores of Capital Infusion Into the National Infrastructure Investment Fund
1.Union Cabinet: Capital Infusion of Rs 6,000 crores into NIIF approved The Union Cabinet approved Rs 6,000 crores of capital infusion into the National Infrastructure Investment Fund. This is a part of the Atma Nirbhar Bharat Abhiyan. The move will leverage to create a financial pipeline of Rs 1 lakh crore. National infrastructure investment fund The National Investment Infrastructure Fund was set up by Government of India in February 2015. The main objective of creating the fund was to increase the investment in Greenfield and brownfield projects. National investment and Infrastructure Fund manages three funds namely master fund, strategic fund, fund of funds. The master fund is primarily invested in building roads, airports, ports, power, etc. The fund of funds is managed by managers with good track records in infrastructure sectors. These funds mainly focus on infrastructure services and allied sectors, green infrastructure and mid income and affordable housing. Strategic investment fund is an alternative investment fund and is managed by SEBI. It mainly focuses on equity and equity linked instruments. This fund is often allocated to brownfield and Greenfield investment in the core infrastructure sectors. National Infrastructure Pipeline The National Infrastructure Pipeline includes social and economic Infrastructure Projects. A task force has been constituted in 2019 to draw up a national infrastructure pipeline for the years 2019 to 2025. The pipeline will mainly focus on projects that will enhance ease of living. It includes access to clean and affordable energy, safe drinking water, more than railway stations, bus terminal, airport and world-class Educational Institutes. It is estimated that between 2020 and 2025 the sectors such as roads, energy, Urban and Railways will constitute to 70% of the total expenditure in infrastructure in India.
