  • Diversity of K-Pop: a Focus on Race, Language, and Musical Genre
DIVERSITY OF K-POP: A FOCUS ON RACE, LANGUAGE, AND MUSICAL GENRE Wonseok Lee A Thesis Submitted to the Graduate College of Bowling Green State University in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of MASTER OF ARTS August 2018 Committee: Jeremy Wallach, Advisor Esther Clinton Kristen Rudisill © 2018 Wonseok Lee All Rights Reserved iii ABSTRACT Jeremy Wallach, Advisor Since the end of the 1990s, Korean popular culture, known as Hallyu, has spread to the world. As the most significant part of Hallyu, Korean popular music, K-pop, captivates global audiences. From a typical K-pop artist, Psy, to a recent sensation of global popular music, BTS, K-pop enthusiasts all around the world prove that K-pop is an ongoing global cultural flow. Despite the fact that the term K-pop explicitly indicates a certain ethnicity and language, as K- pop expanded and became influential to the world, it developed distinct features that did not exist in it before. This thesis examines these distinct features of K-pop focusing on race, language, and musical genre: it reveals how K-pop groups today consist of non-Korean musicians, what makes K-pop groups consisting of all Korean musicians sing in non-Korean languages, what kind of diverse musical genres exists in the K-pop field with two case studies, and what these features mean in terms of the discourse of K-pop today. By looking at the diversity of K-pop, I emphasize that K-pop is not merely a dance- oriented musical genre sung by Koreans in the Korean language.

http://mmi.press.illinois.edu/1.2/wierzbicki.html From Music and the Moving Image Vol. 1, Issue 2. Viewed February 17, 2010 10:24 EST Shrieks, Flutters, and Vocal Curtains: Electronic Sound/Electronic Music in Hitchcock's The Birds James Wierzbicki ........ Figure 1. Alfred Hitchcock in a publicity photo for The Birds (1963). The avian sounds that fill Alfred Hitchcock's 1963 The Birds (Figure 1) were hardly ignored by the film's first reviewers. In the New York Times, Bosley Crowther warned that The Birds "is whirring and screeching with deafening uproar" at local theaters. 1 A critic for Time magazine called attention to the "shrieking din" of the title sequence and remarked that later "the sound track ... reaches a deafening crescendo of screeching, whistling, chattering, flapping cacophony."Z Noting the affective contrast between speech and noise, the reviewer for the Christian Science Monitor opined metaphorically that the "interplay of brittle humans and predatory birds is developed as a kind of miasmic anti-music, aimed at eye and ear."3 The film critic for the Los Angeles Times wrote that the bird noise "scratches you like a fingernail across glass."4 Perhaps most tellingly, Richard Coe in the Washington Post observed that "the story is mercifully without any background music whatever, except for weird electrical sounds by Remi Gassmann and Oskar Sala" (Figure 2).5 Figure 2. Composer Oskar Sala in his Berlin studio (ca. 1980). Coe's remark stands apart from the others, not just because it suggests that audiences of the early 1960s

Hyniea (Niea) Gardner A Thesis in the Field of Anthropology and Archaeology for the Degree of Master of Liberal Arts in Extension Studies Harvard University May 2019 © May 2019 Hyniea (Niea) Gardner Abstract In 2016 the Korea Creative Content Agency (KOCCA) reported that the Korean music industry saw an overseas revenue of ₩5.3 trillion ($4.7 billion) in concert tickets, streaming music, compact discs (CDs), and related services and merchandise such as fan meetings and purchases of music artist apparel and accessories (Kim 2017 and Erudite Risk Business Intelligence 2017). Korean popular music (K-Pop) is a billion-dollar industry. Known for its energetic beats, synchronized choreography, and a sound that can be an amalgamation of electronica, blues, hip-hop, rock, and R&B all mixed together to create something that fans argue is “uniquely K-Pop.” However, further examination reveals that producers and songwriters – both Korean and the American and European specialists contracted by agencies – tend to base the foundation of the K-Pop sound in hip-hop and R&B, which has strong ties to African-American musical traditions.

  • Marc Bolan, David Bowie, and the Counter-Hegemonic Persona: 'Authenticity', Ephemeral Identities, and the 'Fantastical
MEDIANZ ! VOL 15, NO 1 ! 2015 DOI: 10.11157/medianz-vol15iss1id11 - ARTICLE - Marc Bolan, David Bowie, and the Counter-Hegemonic Persona: ‘Authenticity’, Ephemeral Identities, and the ‘Fantastical Other’ Alison Blair Abstract In the 1970s, glam rockstars Marc Bolan and David Bowie were among the first pop music artists to challenge norms of identity, authenticity, gender and sexuality. They presented audiences with a range of counter-hegemonic personae that enacted a departure from the conventional—the alien, the warlock, the ‘bopping elf’, occult magician and hybrid being. For Bolan and Bowie fans, these ‘fantastical Others’ represented an escape from the increasingly unpalatable social and economic conditions of everyday life in 1970s Britain—a period characterised by rising unemployment, declining consumer buoyancy, and ongoing industrial action—and, furthermore, they challenged ideas of essentialised identity and authenticity, by presenting personae that were deliberately artificial, ephemeral, and of fantastical, alternative realities. This article aims to contribute to debates on glam by framing the work of its two most pivotal artists—Bolan and Bowie—in terms of Bakhtin’s notion of the carnivalesque. Bolan, Bowie and the 1970s Writing in 1998, the film director Todd Haynes noted that during his research for the film Velvet Goldmine (1998) there were no full-length books in print about glam rock, ‘nothing to single it out as a comprehensive cultural phenomenon’ (Hoskyns 1998, xi). This is no longer the case, as interest in the 1970s and in glam rock has steadily grown in recent years, both in academia and in the popular imagination. Given glam’s relatively brief popularity, it might be tempting to view the genre’s combination of glitter, glamour, showmanship and androgyny as an anomaly of sorts—an unexpected diversion—and leave it at that.

The Functions of Continuous Processes in Contemporary Electronic Dance Music Jeremy W. Smith NOTE: The examples for the (text-only) PDF version of this item are available online at: hps://www.mtosmt.org/issues/mto.21.27.2/mto.21.27.2.smith.php KEYWORDS: EDM, dance music, popular music, deadmau5, form, climax, narrative, function ABSTRACT: This article discusses the functions of continuous processes in contemporary electronic dance music (EDM), providing an analytical framework for discussing their structural and aesthetic roles in this repertoire. Continuous processes are musical gestures with continuous changes to musical parameters, rather than discrete, “step-by-step” ones. Examples include pitch slides (glissandos), crescendos, fade ins, accelerandos, and filter sweeps. Continuous processes in this repertoire are created with “continuous controllers” such as sliders and knobs, or are programmed into tracks with “automation curves.” Functionally, continuous processes often provide sonic instructions for dancers. They can be used by creators at strategic times to provide ornamentation, orientation (often accompanied by intensification or de-intensification), or disorientation (usually in breakdown sections). This article adds to existing analytical scholarship by drawing aention to the many roles of continuous processes in EDM, and showing how they contribute to the emotional waves experienced when listening to this music. DOI: 10.30535/mto.27.2.0 Received August 2020 Volume 27, Number 2, June 2021 Copyright © 2021 Society for Music Theory [1.1] Producers and fans of electronic dance music (EDM) describe the experience of listening to this repertoire as like riding emotional waves. The superstar producer Armin van Buuren, who works in the EDM genre of trance, says that “Trance music is all about release.
