Aung San Suu Kyi (1945 - ) Major Events in the Life of a Revolutionary Leader All terms appearing in bold are included in the glossary. 1945 On June 19 in Rangoon (now called Yangon), the capital city of Burma (now called Myanmar), Aung San Suu Kyi was born the third child and only daughter to Aung San, national hero and leader of the Burma Independence Army (BIA) and the Anti-Fascist People’s Freedom League (AFPFL), and Daw Khin Kyi, a nurse at Rangoon General Hospital. Aung San Suu Kyi was born into a country with a complex history of colonial domination that began late in the nineteenth century. After a series of wars between Burma and Great Britain, Burma was conquered by the British and annexed to British India in 1885. At first, the Burmese were afforded few rights and given no political autonomy under the British, but by 1923 Burmese nationals were permitted to hold select government offices. In 1935, the British separated Burma from India, giving the country its own constitution, an elected assembly of Burmese nationals, and some measure of self-governance. In 1941, expansionist ambitions led the Japanese to invade Burma, where they defeated the British and overthrew their colonial administration. While at first the Japanese were welcomed as liberators, under their rule more oppressive policies were instituted than under the British, precipitating resistance from Burmese nationalist groups like the Anti-Fascist People’s Freedom League (AFPFL). In 1945, Allied forces drove the Japanese out of Burma and Britain resumed control over the country. 1947 Aung San negotiated the full independence of Burma from British control. -

How Samten Gyaltsen Came to Europe
HOW SAMTEN GYALTSEN CAME TO EUROPE by David Snellgrove he story begins with the offer of the Rockefeller Foundation to provide funds for an extensive programme of Tibetan research, T calling upon the expertise of knowledgeable Tibetan scholars who had fled recently from Tibet to India and Nepal, following upon the flight of the Dalai Lama himself to India in1959. Funds were offered for a three-year period to those universities which were already known to have a active interest in Tibetan studies, namely Seattle in the USA, London, Paris, Leiden, Rome, Bonn and Munich in Western Europe, and Tokyo in Japan. The choice of the Tibetans thus invited, was left to those responsible for Tibetan studies in these various universities, and funds were made available also for us to travel in search of the most interesting possibilities. In May 1960 I made an exploratory tour through northern India and Nepal, meeting others interested in the same scheme, notably Gene Smith from Seattle and Rolf Stein from Paris. As the result of such discussions, I gained the impression that academically it would be more valuable to establish a single research- centre in a suitable place in the Indian sub-continent (I suggested the Kathmandu Valley) rather than invite Tibetan scholars to our particular universities. None of the Tibetans, eventually invited, had any experi- ence of life in our various countries, they had no knowledge of the relevant languages, and much time would be expended in helping them to adapt to this new life. Thus three years seemed a very short pe- riod for anything of academic use to emerge from the labours involved. -

Mind to Meme: Uncovering the Origins of Shared Consciousness Between Judaism and Tibetan Buddhism Towards a Science of Consciousness Conference Tucson, Arizona April 8 – 12, 2004 Gilah Yelin Hirsch 2412 Oakwood Ave Venice, California, 90291 (310-821-6848) www.gilah.com © 2004, Gilah Yelin Hirsch 1 I was born in the mid 40’s and was brought up in an ethnocentric Jewish ghetto of 120,000 in Montreal, Quebec, Canada. My first language was Yiddish, and my second was French, learned as I played with the French Canadian kids on the block. My third and fourth languages were English and Hebrew, studied simultaneously in the Jewish Peretz Day School, in which half the day’s work was in Yiddish and Hebrew and the other half in English and French. Non-Jews were referred to as gentiles, and I did not know any until high school. I never saw a black person until my first trip to New York City when I was 14. My milieu was entirely Jewish, hailing from deeply Jewish parents – father Ezra Yelin, atheist Talmudic scholar; his father, a rabbi and “Rosh Yeshiva” (head of the Yeshiva) in Bialystock, Poland. My paternal great-grandfather, Rabbi Aryeh Layb Yelin, wrote one of the commentaries on the Talmud, “Yafeh Aynayim” in the Bavli Talmud. My mother, renowned Canadian writer/poet, chronicled Jewish life in Montreal, founded the first Jewish kindergarten at the Jewish Peretz School, and later was a founding member of the first Reconstructionist synagogue, Dorshei Emet, in Montreal. I went to Jewish schools, and spent all my summers from 4 to 17 at Jewish summer camps conducted in Hebrew. -

For 25 years, Daw Aung San Suu Kyi endured house arrest because of her unwavering belief in, and fight for, democracy for all the people of Burma. Through her peaceful yet tireless example, Madam Suu Kyi has demonstrated the power of the individual to change the course of history. Now, after 22 years, the United States of America has reopened diplomatic relations with Burma. President Barack Obama visited in November 2012, former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton visited in December 2011 and, in July of 2012, Derek Mitchell was appointed to represent our country as Ambassador to Burma. You who are the teachers of young people, shape thinking and world views each day, directly or subtly, in categories of learning that cross all boundaries.
