The purpose and research question of this thesis was to study and analyse the impact of social media on the lives and aca- demic performance of students and to give recommendations on how to avoid the possi- ble negative effects and how to amplify the positives A specific focus was on the foreign students at LAB University of Applied Sciences which functioned as the case company. The study was performed using the qualitative method and utilizing a combination of pri- mary and secondary sources. The main primary source was a series of interviews con- ducted with these aforementioned foreign students. This data was then analysed by the- matic analysis and the results of it were compared with the literary sources. The results showed that social media has both positive and negative effects on the aca- demic performance. It allows for easy communication and can be a great source of infor- mation, but it can also lead to psychological issues such as addiction and falling victim to cyberbullying. -

FAUCETrE INTRODUcTION On November 8, 1994, Carnegie Mellon University (CMU) removed' a small handful of topics from among the thousands of Usenet newsgroups2 subscribed to by the university computer sys- tem and available on the Internet' .because they contained en- coded sexually explicit images Under the new policy announced by Erwin Steinberg, university vice provost for education, none of the university's 9,000 computers would list the approximately forty newsgroups.5 The newsgroups that were censored are all known as "binaries,"6 and they contain, among other things, encoded imag- 1. Despite the University's restriction on the sexually explicit newsgioups, techno- logically adept students can circumvent the policy by accessing the groups through other file servers. However, for the purposes of this Note, the efforts of these enterprising students are not important when compared with the symbolic effect of the censorship. 2. These newsgroups are "bulletin board-style discussion groups" that can be read from, responded to, and downloaded to an individual's computer. Using discursive psychology, this text explores the rhetorical organization of text and rhetorical resources used on the Swedish online forum Flashback. The aim is to reveal and problematize truth claims about NRM made by antagonists and protagonists. Questions are (1) how and what do NRM antagonists and protagonists convey in Flashback posts about NRM, and its ideology and members? (2) how do NRM antagonists and protagonists make truth claims about NRM in Flashback posts? The empirical material consisting of 1546 Flashback posts analyzed to identify typical discussions on “NMR’s true nature”; accomplished social actions stemming from the posts. -

Gilboy University of Hull 201108684 Abstract (Thesis Summary) The objective of this thesis is to establish meme theory as an analytical paradigm within the fields of screen and fan studies. Meme theory is an emerging framework founded upon the broad concept of a “meme”, a unit of culture that, if successful, proliferates among a given group of people. Created as a cultural analogue to genetics, memetics has developed into a cultural theory and, as the concept of memes is increasingly applied to online behaviours and activities, its relevance to the area of media studies materialises. The landscapes of media production and spectatorship are in constant fluctuation in response to rapid technological progress. The internet provides global citizens with unprecedented access to media texts (and their producers), information, and other individuals and collectives who share similar knowledge and interests. The unprecedented speed with (and extent to) which information and media content spread among individuals and communities warrants the consideration of a modern analytical paradigm that can accommodate and keep up with developments. Meme theory fills this gap as it is compatible with existing frameworks and offers researchers a new perspective on the factors driving the popularity and spread (or lack of popular engagement with) a given media text and its audience. -

Abstract This work presents my PhD thesis about the influence of anonymity on par- ticipation in online environments. The starting point of this research was the observation of the design process of an online platform for informal caregivers. I realized that there is no knowledge about the practical effects that an anony- mous identity system would have. This thesis contains the subsequent literature review, which has been synthesized into a model that shows which participation factors might be influenced by anonymity. Three studies on existing online en- vironments have been conducted: One on Youtube, where there was a change in the comment system forbidding anonymous comments; one on Quora, where users can choose to answer questions anonymously; and one on Hacker News, where users choose how many identity factors they want to present and which name they use. -

Over the past two decades, more and more illegal activities have been conducted on or facilitated by the Internet. This shift towards the virtual is important for criminologists as traces of offenders’ activities can be accessed and monitored, given the right tools and techniques. This paper will discuss three techniques that can be used by criminologists looking to gather data on offenders who operate online: 1) mirroring, which takes a static image of an online resource like websites or forums; 2) monitoring, which involves an on- going observation of static and dynamic resources like websites and forums but also online marketplaces and chat rooms and; 3) leaks, which involve downloading of data placed online by offenders or left by them unwittingly. This paper will focus on how these tools can be developed by social scientists, drawing in part on our experience developing a tool to monitor online drug “cryptomarkets” like Silk Road and its successors. Special attention will be given to the challenges that researchers may face when developing their own custom tool, as well as the ethical considerations that arise from the automatic collection of data online.
