The goal can be achieved in two ways: by indicating the model of a well functioning enterprise, economy or the whole society or by diagnosing what the situation is like today in an economy or an enterprise. Therefore, we deal with theorizing, modelling the mentioned phenomena and processes, and with surveys. Both activities are necessary to operate more effectively. The first one sets the direction and the goal of activity, the other one defines the methods and means to achieve it. It is in these cases that the source of inspiration, assistance is provided by theory, knowledge from experience, creativity of individuals. It is included in each of the articles constituting this issue of The Małopolska School of Economics in Tarnów Research Papers Collection, already the 36th issue. It is worth mentioning that each presented approach adds new ideas to the current knowledge on management, and the process changes the mindsets of managers and their organizational behaviours. The Research Papers Collection is the work of scientific and didactic workers of our School and employees from other Polish and foreign universities, such as: Polytechnic In- stitute of Beja in Portugal, Lviv Educational Institute of the Higher Educational Institution ‘Banking University’ in Ukraine, Trakia University in Stara Zagora, Bulgaria, Poznan Uni- versity of Technology, Wrocław University of Science and Technology, AGH University of Science and Technology, Pedagogical University of Cracow, Jan Kochanowski University in Kielce, and Kielce University of Technology. The papers, being the effect of scientific work conducted within basic and implementation re- search, provide a lot of interesting information in terms of cognition and application. The prob- lems of the articles making up this Journal concentrate mainly around the issues of human capi- tal management, ergonomics, as well as entrepreneurship and innovativeness of organizations. In the collected articles, the Reader will find a lot of theoretical approaches concerning: in- novation process and the method of studying the innovative ability of an enterprise, intellec- tual capital management, the methods of studying and improving the quality assurance sys- tem in an organization, the application of ergonomics principles in office work and teaching students, or tourism entrepreneurship. The Journal can be an interesting and useful reference for organization and management, tourism and pedagogics theoreticians, as well as students and practicians. I would like to thank all those who co-created this issue of the Research Papers Collection, particularly the Editors who made an effort to give opinions about the articles sent in, the Review- ers for substantive and valuable remarks, and all the Editorial Team, as well as all collaborators. The development of peripheral areas: The case of West Pomeranian Voivodeship, Poland Martin KEBZA a * Abstract The process of peripheralisation of outlying areas is discussed in this article using a case study of West Pomeranian (Zachodniopomorskie) Voivodeship in Poland. Emphasis is placed on the relationship between these peripheral areas and metropolitan core areas. Scalar and vector data on selected indicators in the years 2005 and 2015 for gminas (communes, territorial units NUTS 5) are presented. The values for both years were observed as well as the change between them. A composite indicator based on the calculated data was developed, and it served as the basis for categorisation of metropolitan, 'semi-peripheral' and peripheral areas, which were further defined on the basis of their intrinsic properties and location in the region. The development of such peripheral areas is assessed more generally in the conclusions. Michalak, S. Sinkowski 2017, An Ottonian spur from the Early Medieval cemetery in Santok in Western Poland, AMM XIII:133-147 The spur with buckle which is the subject of this paper was discovered near an inhumation grave (Grave 1) in Santok. It can be classified as type I:1 according to Hilczerówna, and dated to the period between the end of the 10th – 11th century. The whole spur was covered with some kind of interlace pattern, which forms elongated rhombic-like cells with slightly rounded or hard angled corners. This decoration is unique and has no exact analogies in European materials. Attention must be however paid to later artefacts (from the 12th century) from Germany, adorned with zigzag pattern which form rhombuses. SŁOWIaŃSka kulTuRa ElITaRNa W zaChODNIEJ CzĘŚCI PaŃSTWa PIaSTÓW THE SPUR GOAD FROM LUBNIEWICE, POLAND. SLAVIC ELITE CULTURE IN THE WESTERN PART OF THE PIAST STATE abstract. This paper focuses on a copper-alloy goad discovered in 2017 in Lubniewice in Lubuskie Voivodeship, Poland. An interdisciplinary analysis has shown that the goad was originally part of a lavishly decorated copper-alloy spur representing a type known from high-status West Slavic graves (e.g. Lutomiersk, Ciepłe) and settlement sites. Because objects of this kind are made of costly material, and because expert skills were required to produce them, it is argued that they were commissioned by a very specific group of people who used them as “material markers” of their distinct cultural and reli- gious identity. It is not unlikely that the owners of such spurs were members of the elite retinue of the Piasts who played important roles on and off the battlefield. Keywords: Western Slavs, Viking Age, spurs, Slavic mythology, elites, equestrian equipment INTRODUCTION There is no doubt that among many early medieval societies spurs were en- dowed with symbolic significance. For this reason, these essential elements of equestrian equipment were sometimes ornamented with intricate designs referring to the sphere of pagan beliefs. Examples of this form of artistic and ideological expression can be seen on the terminals of the Frankish spur from R. • Silesian Administrative Authorities and Territorial Transformations of Silesia (1918-1945)
Tomasz Kruszewski Institute of History of State and Law, University of Wrocław Silesian administrative authorities and territorial transformations of Silesia (1918-1945) Abstract: The publication concerns conditions in the 19th and 20th centuries leading to the dissolution of Silesian unity as well as the viewpoints of German, Polish and Czechoslovakian political au- thorities regarding Silesian unity following World War I, while also taking into account the viewpoints of Church institutions. The text is an analysis and a summary of existing works on the subject matter, with the main area of interest being the analysis of legal, organizational and administrative institutions concerning their policies towards the dissolution of Silesian unity. The latter half of the 19th century was chiefly responsible for the breakup of Silesian unity, due to the rise of the idea of nationalism leading to the idea of nation-states. The materialization of this idea in respect of Silesia, a region inhabited by three nations, two of which were then build- ing their own states, could only mean the dissolution of the monolithic administrative structure erected within the Second German Reich. The realisation of these ideas was brought on by World War I, in whose wake the Republic of Poland and the Republic of Czechoslovakian were born, while the Second German Reich collapsed. Keywords: Silesia, administration, Church history, political life, interwar period Introduction: political and legal factors behind the disintegration of the uniform province of Silesia The defeat of the Wilhelmine Reich in the First World War brought about the final collapse of the territorial unity of Silesia; it has never been restored.
