Oleh: Timotius Manggala Prasetia Jakarta - Berita duka datang dari dunia musik metal. Vokalis Static-X, Wayne Static meninggal dunia pada Sabtu (1/11) pekan lalu. Hingga kini penyebab kematiannya belum diketahui. “Musisi dengan penjualan platinum, Wayne Richard Wells atau yang biasa kita kenal sebagai Wayne Static telah meninggal dunia dalam usia 48 tahun. Wayne Static adalah mantan pentolan dan namanya digunakan sebagai nama Static-X. Dia juga sukses dalam bersolo karier. Dalam beberapa bulan ke depan, Wayne juga memiliki jadwal tur bersama Powerman 5000 dan Drowning Pool,” tulis Static-X di laman Facebook. Static-X dibentuk 1994. Membawakan genre nu-metal, album pertama mereka Wisconsin Death Trip (1999) langsung merebut status platinum dengan single “Push It.” Diikuti oleh Machine (2001) yang mampu meraih sertifikasi emas. Lalu Static-X merilis empat album lainnya. Sebagai pentolan, Wayne Static memiliki penampilan fisik yang khas. Rambut spike dengan panjang yang tidak normal untuk gaya seperti itu menjadi daya tarik sendiri. Static-X memutuskan vakum pada 2010. Wayne menghidupkan kembali Static-X untuk bersolo karir. Salah satu karyanya adalah kolaborasi bersama Daryl “DMC” McDaniels dari Run DMC dengan lagu bernafaskan rap-rock, “Noise Revolution.” Teman-teman musisi yang mengenalnya dengan baik ikut menunjukkan rasa belasungkawa mereka. Walaupun penyebab kematian Wayne belum diketahui namun pernyataan beberapa temannya tentang tragedi ini condong mengarah terhadap overdosis sebagai penyebabnya. “RIP Wayne. Ini sangat menyedihkan. Terlalu banyak musisi yang meninggal karena overdosis,” tulis vokalis Papa Roach, Jacob Shaddix di Instagram. Ada juga pentolan The Smashing Pumpkins, Billy Corgan yang menulis di Twitter, “Saya terkejut mendengar Wayne telah pergi. Saya pernah bermain dengannya di Deep Blue Dream pada 1987/88. Di adalah laki-laki sejati dan sangat mencintai musik, khususnya KISS dan Ace. Oleh: Timotius Manggala Prasetia Jakarta - Trailer terbaru dari film sekuel ketujuhFast & Furious telah hadir. Film ketujuh dari serial yang sudah dimulai sejak 2001 dan selalu mendapat predikat box office ini kini diberi judul Furious 7. Furious 7 akan menjadi kemunculan terakhir Paul Walker di film yang membesarkan namanya. Paul Walker yang wafat pada 30 November 2013 akibat kecelakaan mobil sebelumnya sempat ikut pula syuting Furious 7. Seharusnya serial ketujuh ini dirilis pada musim panas 2014. Tetapi karena kepergian Paul Waker, jadwal rilis mundur sampai April 2015. Trailer film ini dibuka oleh aksi terjun payung menggunakan mobil oleh Dominic Toretto dan teman-temannya. Setelah mendarat di jalan, mereka mengejar truk berwarna hitam dengan maksud menyelamatkan wanita yang diculik. Paul Walker ditonjolkan dalam aksi penyelamatan ini. Dia sendiri akan “dipensiunkan” dalam film terakhirnya dibandingkan harus “dimatikan.” Cerita Furious 7 melanjutkan Fast 6. Dominic Toretto dan teman-temannya ditantang oleh Ian Shaw (Jason Statham) yang merupakan adik dari musuh di Fast 6,Owen Shaw. Ian Shaw juga yang membunuh Han di Tokyo. Beberapa bintang baru muncul di film ini seperti petarung UFC Ronda Rousey, Tony Jaa dan Kurt Russel. Tokoh Han sudah tidak muncul lagi tapi akan ada penggantinya. Oleh: Timotius Manggala Prasetia Jakarta - Konser Marilyn Manson di klub The Roxy, Los Angeles, AS pada malam Halloween lalu kedatangan tamu spesial. Menurut cerita Rolling Stone, Aktor berkarisma, Johnny Depp muncul di atas panggung bersama Ninja dari Die Antwoord. Depp membawa gitar dan ikut tampil bermain di lagu “The Beautiful People” sebagai encore di konser malam itu. Aksi panggung yang memukau mereka tampilkan. Namun, ini bukan pertama kalinya Manson dan Depp tampil bersama di satu panggung. Sebelumnya mereka pernah bermain bersama di ajang Revolver Golden Gods Awards 2012. Depp bermain gitar untuk Manson pada lagu “You’re So Vain.” Pada 2014 ini bisa disebut sebagai pengukuhan Johnny Depp sebagai musisi. Aksi panggungnya di tahun ini cukup ramai, bareng Aerosmith, Paul McCartney, Willie Nelson, bermain gitar di lagu Bob Dylan, memainkan lagu Danzig bersama Ryan Adams dan mengisi album baru Butch Walker. Semuanya dilakukan atas kecintaannya terhadap musik. Tidak heran jika Depp sering manggung bersama Manson. Mereka telah berteman sejak 1999. Manson juga sering muncul di premier film-film terbaru Johnny Depp seperti From Hell dan Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man’s Chest.     The Interplay of Authority, Masculinity, and Signification in the “Grunge Killed Glam Metal” Narrative by Holly Johnson A thesis submitted to the Faculty of Graduate and Postdoctoral Affairs in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Master of Arts in Music and Culture Carleton University Ottawa, Ontario © 2014, Holly Johnson ii Abstract This thesis will deconstruct the "grunge killed '80s metal” narrative, to reveal the idealization by certain critics and musicians of that which is deemed to be authentic, honest, and natural subculture. The central theme is an analysis of the conflicting masculinities of glam metal and grunge music, and how these gender roles are developed and reproduced. I will also demonstrate how, although the idealized authentic subculture is positioned in opposition to the mainstream, it does not in actuality exist outside of the system of commercialism. The problematic nature of this idealization will be examined with regard to the layers of complexity involved in popular rock music genre evolution, involving the inevitable progression from a subculture to the mainstream that occurred with both glam metal and grunge. Brown, Advisor Between 1984 and 1991, heavy metal became one of the most publicly popular and commercially successful rock music subgenres. The focus of this dissertation is to explore the following research questions: How did the subculture of heavy metal music between 1984 and 1991 evolve and what meanings can be derived from this ongoing process? How did the contextual circumstances surrounding heavy metal music during this period impact the performative choices exhibited by artists, and from a position of retrospection, what lasting significance does this particular era of heavy metal merit today? A textual analysis of metal- related materials fostered the development of themes relating to the selective choices made and performances enacted by metal artists. These themes were then considered in terms of gender, sexuality, race, and age constructions as well as the ongoing negotiations of the metal artist within multiple performative realms. Occurring at the juncture of art and commerce, heavy metal music is a purposeful construction. Metal musicians made performative choices for serving particular aims, be it fame, wealth, or art. These same individuals worked within a greater system of influence. Metal bands were the contracted employees of record labels whose own corporate aims needed to be recognized.

    JUSTIN BIEBER FEATURING SLIPKNOT: Consumption as Mode of Production Ragnhild Brøvig-Hanssen A musical mash-up typically consists of two recognizable recordings that are synchronized such that the vocal(s) of one track are combined with an instrumental version of the other without significant edits.1 The ontological presence of a mash-up band is thus only to be found in the virtual domain––that is, the artists in question have never actually performed together. The virtual music collaborations enabled by mash-up producers invite us to encounter the musical result in ways that are very different from those we apply to non- virtual music collaborations, and, as scholars, we are therefore compelled to analyze the music in a different way as well. Moreover, mash-up music encourages us to rethink what musical authorship, creativity, and musicality means to us today.
