John D. Lewis Chair, Board of Directors

John D. Lewis is the chair of the Board of Directors at Beaumont Health, ’s largest health care system, based on inpatient admissions and net patient revenue. He has also acted as non-executive chairman of the boards of Flagstar Bancorp and since October 2012.

From 2006 to 2015, he served as managing director of the investment banking firm of Donnelly Penman & Partners. He joined Donnelly Penman from Comerica Bank, where he had a 36-year career, ultimately serving as vice chairman and director of Comerica Incorporated and Comerica Bank and as a member of the management policy committee and management council. While at Comerica, Lewis was responsible for the individual and investment bank divisions, as well as the development and administration of banking activities related to Comerica’s expansion into , and .

Lewis has remained active in leadership positions at many civic and community organizations including serving as past chairman of the boards of the University of Mercy and Oakwood Healthcare System and vice chairman of the board of the Detroit Institute of Arts. He is a trustee of the Community Foundation for and past chairman of the Greater Detroit Area Health Council and New Detroit, Inc. He also serves on the board of directors of the Stratford Shakespearean Festival of America.

He earned his bachelor’s degree from the University of Dayton and his Master of Business Administration from the University of Detroit. He also attended the University of Michigan Graduate School of Banking. In 2004, Lewis received a Distinguished Alumni Award from the University of Dayton. He and his wife, Arlene, live in Farms. They have three adult children and three grandchildren.
