DESCRIPTORS *Comics (Publications); Cultural Differences; *Cultural Influences; French; Japanese; *Translation ABSTRACT This article explores translation strategies in English and French versions of Japanese comic books, comparing English and French dialogue text regarding local color, atmospherics, and characterization. Section 1 describes Japanese comic books. Section 2 examines translation strategies. Sections 3 and 4 discuss local color and character locus (translation of culture-specific items and of non-standard dialect and foreigner talk). Section 5 discusses the translation of register (situations of language use) .Section 6 highlights comic book character role (the soldier, schoolgirl, and vamp) .Section 7 discusses atmospherics (jargonization) .Section 8 concludes that American translators used naturalizing strategies, both culturally (name changes and insertion of references to American culture) and linguistically (stereotypical use of dialects and use of heavily marked register). Strategies used in the French versions are less naturalizing than those used in the American versions. Culturally, they are more foreignizing in conserving names and culture-specific items. Linguistically, in some translations, transfers and calques from the English version are used, and as a result, the dialogue reads like a translation, but not from the Japanese original. Other French translations reveal linguistic neutralization with regard to dialect and register.

A tale of good and evil, light and darkness, innocence and corruption, Tokyo Babylon is a powerful drama.Subaru Sumeragi is a deeply compassionate sixteen year old medium/exorcist who uses his gift to aid lost spirits and the possessed. After a hard day or nights work, he comes home to his devoted, vivacious twin sister Hokuto, whose favorite hobby seems to be trying to hook Subaru up with their friend Seishirou - a veterinarian nine years their senior - in spite of reservations due to the fact that he belongs to a family with a reputation of being in the assassination business that they both choose to ignore.The interaction between the three reaches its climax in the final volume, with hints throughout the series about how things might ultimately turn out, but Subarus interaction with the people he tries to help is interesting in itself. The series handles such topics as gang rape, child abuse, treatment of the elderly, and the ethics of organ transplantation - pretty heavy subject matter.Subaru himself is a highly unique hero.

    Submission of Simon Brady to the Film and Literature Board of Review 23 February 2005 1 Introduction Pursuant to section 53(2)(a) of the Films, Videos, and Publications Classification Act 1993, I wish to make the following submission to the Board in respect of the publication Puni Puni Poemy. The essence of my submission is simple: the publication may be trashy and tasteless, but it is not harmful to society if restricted to an adult audience. While it depicts activities that fall within the statutory definition of “objectionable,” it does so in the context of outrageous parody. The manner of depiction therefore nullifies any potential for harm. My submission begins with a brief summary of the publication’s background and my reasons for seek- ing a review of its classification. I then consider the publication in light of s3 of the Act, focussing particularly upon the question of how a parody should be interpreted. 2 Background to the Publication 2.1 Genesis Puni Puni Poemy is a two-episode spin-off from the popular TV anime Excel Saga. Famous for its bizarre storyline and total lack of respect for convention, Excel Saga has been described as “meta- anime” due to its frequent humorous references to other series. The series is available in New Zealand with an M rating: this includes the notorious finale,´ episode 26, which was released direct to video in Japan and went well beyond what Japanese television censorship would have allowed. Puni Puni Poemy began as a joke in episode 17 of Excel Saga, when one of the minor characters was shown working on it in the belief that a career in animation is a path to wealth and fame (a misappre- hension the main characters are quick to dispel).

    PRESS RELEASE May 2012 12/32 Anime Weekend at BFI Southbank with preview of From Up on Poppy Hill From June 8 – 10 BFI Southbank will once again hold its biennial weekend showcasing the best in recent anime. Anime is comparatively new to Western audiences – although Japanese animation has existed since the turn of the 20th Century. It was only when films such as Akira (Katsuhiro Otomo, 1988) were released in the late 1980s that the western world sat up and took notice. The Anime weekend at BFI Southbank will be packed with hotly anticipated previews, high-profile Q&As and an eclectic mix of different genres and styles. The weekend will open with a preview of the much anticipated From Up on Poppy Hill (2011), the latest offering from Studio Ghibli. Directed by Goro Miyazaki (son of studio founder and preeminent director Hayao), From Up on Poppy Hill is a timely tale set in rural Yokohama just before the 1964 Tokyo Olympics. A frequent misconception of anime is that it is invariably violent, or only for adults, but titles such as A Letter to Momo (2011) and Oblivion Island (2009) will appeal to audiences of all ages. Also screening will be UK premieres of Full Metal Alchemist 2 (2011) (featuring a Q&A with special guests director Kazuya Murata and producer Masahiko Minami) and The Princess and the Pilot (2011).
