Khairal-Kuwait Charity Foundation is one of the distinguished Kuwaiti charitable societies in terms of its giving and specialization in the field of caring for orphans, people with special needs, the elderly and people with chronic diseases. The foundation has, in the beginning, launched its activity, since its establishment in 2007, inside the State of Kuwait; and after having achieved reasonable success in its local humanitarian works and projects, the foundation has conveyed its experience outside Kuwait in order to express the orig- inality of the Kuwaiti society and its global entrepre- neurship in the humanitarian work.

The foundation has been able to achieve many relations and cooperation protocols at the regional and international levels. So, we, in the Kuwait Center for Documentation of Humanitarian Action “FANAR”, have the honor to participate and cooperate with it to document its pioneering humanitarian course of action, and at the same time we call for more giving and distinction, and we also encourage its sister charitable societies and institutions so as to document their volunteer and humanitarian work so as to benefit from its suc- cessful experiences. The idea of establishing Khairal-Kuwait Charity Founda- tion came from the generous desire of Sheikha Firyal Al Duaij Al- Salman Al-Sabah after a visit to the orphanages of the Ministry of Social Affairs and Labor, and her thinking about developing the services provided to them as well as providing programs and activities for orphans so that the reward of this work can go to her late father Sheikh Duaij Al-Salman Al-Sabah and her late mother Mrs. Munira Al-Hilal Al- Mutairi. Thereafter, she presented the idea to a number of those interested in this field who participated with her in establishing this Foun- dation. When the desire of all the founders met, Khairal-Kuwait Charity Foundation was Late Sheikh Late Mrs. Duaij Al-Salman Al-Sabah established as a non-profit public benefit Munira Al-Hilal Al-Mutairi agency, and it was officially declared by the Ministry of Social Affairs and Labor under the Ministerial Resolu- tion No. 266 of 2007 issued on December 31, 2007 as a charitable organization aiming to contribute to improving the conditions of orphans in the Social Care Houses, as well as enhancing the spirit of citizenship and the culture of development for this emerging category and the youth, besides the training of Kuwaiti cadres as social and psychological specialists, and creating job opportunities in addition to the necessary qualification for this category in cooperation with official and private authorities, as well as providing scholarships and cash prizes for this category in order to encourage them to excel be outstanding, besides organizing religious, educational and promotional activities for them, and implementing any other activity of charitable acts and public benefit according to what is approved by the board of directors of the Foundation, in a manner that does not conflict with the purposes of its establishment as well as the official laws and decisions regulating it. After one year of the establishment, the founders proposed adding new segments, namely the elderly, people with special needs and chronic diseases.

The affairs of the Foundation are managed by a board of directors consisting of nine members who are selected by the general assembly for a period of two years, renewable for a similar period. Since its establishment in late 2007 and the beginning of 2008, Khairal-Kuwait Charity Foundation has embarked on a number of projects and activities of a social and humanitarian character, especially with regard to orphans, and particularly the orphans of the social care houses in the Ministry of Social Affairs, in an effort to encourage and support the values of volunteer work because of its good and pioneering role in the advancement of the Kuwaiti society, and the spreading of mercy and interdependence among its various segments and groups, by providing an incubator environment for the targeted groups by the Foundation in order to improve their conditions and living, in accordance with the saying of the Messenger of Allah, may God bless him and grant him peace: (The example of the believers in their friendship, compassion, and sympathy like the body if one organ of it complains, the rest of the body will stay up to over the night to share feverish pains).

The Foundation has implemented a number of projects and activities, and we will discuss the most important projects and activities that Khairal-Kuwait Charity Foundation is implementing within the State of Kuwait, including awareness, entertainment and cul- tural projects, training courses, assistance in forming families for orphans, effective cooperation and partnership agreements with local bodies, as follows:

Khairal-Kuwait Foundation - a Procession of 14 Years of Good Deeds 29 Studies to Determine the Needs of Orphans

Foundation began its journey by preparing studies to find out the needs of orphans in terms of psychological, health and physical aspects. A thorough study was prepared through a consulting office in which the priorities and needs that should be implemented for orphans were determined, and other comprehensive surveys were prepared on the level of residential buildings in which orphans live, in order to know the size of the necessary needs. The Foundation made a deliber- ate plan for the projects and activities of the Founda- tion to serve orphans and provide for their needs, and an agreement was subsequently concluded with a legal consulting office to provide legal advice to the foundation, and the Foundation approved its work plan through studies that were implemented from the rec- ommendations that were approved.

30 Khairal-Kuwait Foundation - a Procession of 14 Years of Good Deeds Visits to H. H. The Amir of Kuwait Sheikh Sabah Al Ahmed Al Jaber Al Sabah

At the beginning of the establishment of the Founda- tion, a visit was made to His Highness the Amir of Ku- wait Sheikh Sabah Al-Ahmad Al-Jaber Al-Sabah, to introduce him to the foundation, its humanitarian goals and its future projects. He was informed of the foundation’s plan and its desire to implement various activities and programs for orphans, and to restore and rehabilitate orphans’ buildings. His Highness praised this initiative and expressed his willingness to donate and contribute to the restoration of orphanages at his own expense, and this meeting had a great positive motivation among the members of the Board of Directors of the Foundation to actively and effectively strive to provide the best services for orphans, and his Highness contributed to the restoration of orphanages in 2010, and the Foundation officials paid many visits to him to thank him for his donation and his reception of orphans on several occasions when they visited him to motivate and encourage them.

Khairal-Kuwait Foundation - a Procession of 14 Years of Good Deeds 31 «To my Orphan Brother» competition

Since its inception in 2008, the Foundation has held an annual competition entitled «My Orphan Brother Com- petition», in cooperation with the Ministry of Educa- tion. The competition aims to preserve the language of the Holy Qur’an, and the discovery of the talents in the fields of literature, poetry and drawing as well as encouraging the caring for orphans and assist them. Orphan students interacted with the competition and showed their creativity and distinguished talents in this competition. The competition continued annually with distinction and excellence, and was proposed to the Arabic League so as to circulate it to all Arab countries, and this competition has been approved so as to be executed soon.

The entertainment for orphans, especially the guests of the social care houses in the Ministry of Social Affairs, is one of the most important activities provided by Khairal-Kuwait Charity Foundation, with the aim of bringing joy and happiness to the hearts of this category that was deprived of the blessing of parents, and with the aim of providing a social incubator that contributes to their integration into the society and restores confidence for them in order to compensate them for the deprivation of the sympathy of the father and mother.

The various entertainment facilities include trips to shopping malls, children›s entertainment cities, parks, sports clubs, theaters and cinemas.

The Foundation is also keen that the orphans enjoy the local seasonal atmosphere associated with specific occasions such as the establishment of spring camps on land, chalets, and swimming pools in the summer, so that orphans do not feel that there is no difference between them and their peers of unequal treatment, and that they live their lives naturally.

As wisdom says, «A healthy mind in a healthy body», Khairal-Kuwait Foundation is keen to take care of the health and food of orphans and to diversify the same away from the monotony, so it bears the cost of providing meals and foodstuffs on a regular basis, including the provision of nutritious meals such as breakfast, lunch, dinner and fast food in the most luxurious restaurants and hotels, in order to bring pleasure to their hearts. The matter is not limited to orphans only, but also includes their supervisors in order to create a family atmosphere between them and break the monotony and routine. The Foundation also is keen that the children›s diets be balanced and enjoying useful nutrients, in order to preserve their health. Therefore, these meals are made through companies, restaurants and hotels capable of preparing suitable meals for them, with the aim of bringing joy and pleasure to all orphans to try to integrate them into society and make them feel that there is no difference between them and their normal peers who have families who care for them and take care of them, their health and their food.

Khairal-Kuwait Foundation contributes to some construction projects in children care houses in the Ministry of Social Affairs as well as some houses and public benefit authorities, in order to extend the bridges of cooperation and ties of cooperation with them for serving and benefiting certain categories of the Kuwaiti society, including orphans and handicapped. The construction projects included certain rooms related to the care for orphans in the social care houses in the Ministry of Social Affairs and some public benefit buildings such as swimming pools, children rooms and other rooms for the security guards. H. H. The Amir of Kuwait Sheikh Sabah Al Ahmed Al Jaber Al Sabah took the initiative in the year 2010 and borne the expenses for rehabilitation of the buildings of Children House in the Ministry of Social Affairs through the donation by H.H. The Amir for Khairal-Kuwait Foundation of all costs of the rehabilitation process. This reassures the sympathy and compassion of H.H. The Amir towards his orphan children.

Khairal-Kuwait Foundation - a Procession of 14 Years of Good Deeds 37 Education Seekers

Khairal-Kuwait Foundation pays great attention to the educational process for orphans and other groups of people with special needs in order to arm themselves with education and knowledge. This is based on the Foundation belief that “knowledge raises houses that have no support and ignorance destroys houses of honor and generosity.

The foundation has adopted many projects for the students who seek knowledge and education, and it incurred educational expenses and scholarship fees for the outstanding ones among them in order to obtain the best and most prestigious certificates from local and international universities and academies, with the aim of creating such a generation of orphans which is duly armed with science and knowledge in order to serve his country. Many orphans who were sponsored by the Foundation have obtained higher degrees such as masters and doctorates in various fields of science, and they were up to the responsibility that the Foundation granted to them. Also, the Foundation is quite keen to provide continuous support for orphan students, especially the outstanding ones among them, and it bears the costs of study no matter what their education costs, based on its humanitarian role in serving orphans and considering them as a part of the society and that they must be taken care of, for their best upgrading and advancement.

38 Khairal-Kuwait Foundation - a Procession of 14 Years of Good Deeds Orphans treatment

The work of Khairal-Kuwait Foundation is not limited to providing an environment and social incubator for orphans and other groups targeted by the foundation, but has also worked to provide the necessary health care for them by providing examinations and treatment for sick orphan children. The Foundation has borne the expenses of many orphans who were sent for treatment in local or foreign hospitals, if the health condition required for that, in line with its responsibility.

From time to time, the Foundation conducts health awareness campaigns in cooperation with the Ministries of Social Affairs and Health to preserve the health of orphan children and considers them as a trust under its custody, so it does not feel burdened or bothered by them but rather it is keen to follow them on their health, and provide the necessary medicine for the patients from them regardless of the financial costs, even if some cases require to travel abroad.

Khairal-Kuwait Foundation - a Procession of 14 Years of Good Deeds 39 Visiting and Inspecting Social Care Houses

The members of the board of directors of Khairal- Kuwait Foundation are always keen to visit and inspect the conditions of orphans in social care houses and family nurseries at the Ministry of Social Affairs so as to closely examine such cases that are being looked after or that need care by the Foundation, or to be informed of one of the construction or social projects, as well as visiting some institutions and authorities that take care of orphans or the people with special needs.

The aim of these visits is to strengthen the bonds of cooperation between the Foundation and the orphans and those who are in charge of their affairs. The visits in turn contribute to informing orphans that there are those who ask about them and their conditions and care about their affairs.

These visits also aim to closely examine the actual situation, whether of the social or construction projects, so that the necessary amendments can be conducted on them in the future and to avoid the negatives, if any. So, the Foundation is constantly keen to follow up these projects periodically during the implementation stages so as to produce any of these projects in its best form.

40 Khairal-Kuwait Foundation - a Procession of 14 Years of Good Deeds Orphan Marriage and Formation of New Families

In order to integrate orphans into society and considering them as a building block of its components, Khairal-Kuwait Foundation has always been keen to support the social life of orphans so as to help them form new families that contribute to the advancement of the society, and also to compensate them for being deprived of their original families that they lost due to orphanhood. The Foundation contributes to bearing the costs of marriage for those who are wishing to start a new family life by providing direct financial support to help them meet some of the needs and expenses of marriage through direct sums of money. Also, the Foundation tries to bear the expense of renting a house for the spouses in the event that there are no good financial capabilities available for such couples.

The goal of the financial support for orphans› marriage is one of the most noble paths that the Foundation seeks to achieve, in order to preserve the social existence of orphans and to preserve them and cover them with the law of God, in order to form new families that can compensate them for their deprivation of the orphanhood they lived before.

There is no doubt that orphans and people with special needs represent an important segment among the segments of the society that should not be neglected, so that the charitable organizations, societies and public benefit institutions can contribute to working to integrate them into the society. Public competitions, religious competitions and prizes for memorizing the Noble Qur’an are one of the ways to participate with other groups of society who have families and who can take care of them and look after their interests.

Hence, the Khairal-Kuwait Foundation has been focusing on developing the competitive sense of orphans and encouraging them to ride the wave of honest & fair competition in various fields of public life that suit their ages. And that can be achieved by supporting them and involving them in these competitions. These competitions aim to raise the awareness among orphans and encourage them to read books and learn about them, in addition to getting acquainted with public affairs, and it is a very important way to integrate orphans into society, especially since these competitions encourage honorable and praiseworthy competition that strengthens in the psyche of the orphan child the incentive to continue in life, to have the spirit of struggle and perseverance.

The Arab Orphan Day is one of the most important Arab events that take place in all countries of the Arab world, including Kuwait. The Foundation has confirmed its support for these events and their establishment or participation in them locally in cooperation with the Ministry of Social Affairs, believing that the Arab orphan child must be served in an integrated manner, and through such events the experiences and aspects of integration with Arab countries and between each other are highlighted during the month of April of each year.

Khairal-Kuwait Foundation sought, many years ago, to present a proposal to create a special union for Kuwaiti charitable societies, and the Foundation was keen to call for the establishment of a union in order to coordinate efforts among themselves and exchange experiences and experiments. The Ministry of Education is the first teacher for students in the State of Kuwait, as it is the official body entrusted with raising and teaching young children.

Kuwait had been familiar with the formal education with the establishment of Al-Mubarakiya School in 1911, then it gradually expanded until the establishment of the Council and Department of Education in 1936, which later became the Ministry of Education.

Orphans are a category of students with special living and educational conditions. From this standpoint, the issue of integrating them into the normal educational process like their peers from students who have families and live in their homes stable between their parents. Therefore, Khairal- Kuwait Foundation signed a memorandum of cooperation with the Ministry of Education on November 2010 ,4 with the aim of serving students from the category of orphans.

The Kuwait Scout Girls Society is supervising all GCC, Arab and international activities & programs it receives from the external entities and in turn it provides to Student Activities Sector in the Ministry of Education (represented by the General Guidance & Technical Guidance for Scout Girls) so as to circulate to educational areas, private education and private education schools.

Just as Khairal-Kuwait Foundation has local partnership cooperation agreements, the Foundation was keen to conclude partnership and foreign cooperation agreements with regional and international organizations and associate Foundations in other countries. The aim of these agreements is for the Foundation to cooperate with regional and international bodies and institutions closely related to its work in the field of public benefit to serve orphans and improve their conditions in their social care homes, in order to instill education and teach them the teachings of their religion, morals and public behaviors.

The Foundation was able to conclude many foreign agreements and partnerships in a short period of time, and the Foundation was keen to exchange experiences between it and these foundations to advance the process of enhancing the presence of orphans in society and the advancement of them and their conditions in all fields.

In its choices to s0ign external cooperation agreements, the Foundation has made sure that these organizations are officially accredited in their country and that they bear the international institutional and organizational character so that cooperation is fruitful and beneficial to both parties.

The Foundation is not satisfied with concluding agreements and partnerships with associate organizations. Rather, the Foundation joined international organizations or affiliated with the United Nations, and all of this was mainly aimed at serving orphans. Khairal-Kuwait Foundation has signed a cooperation protocol with Misr El Mahrousa «Baladi» Society on December 2016 ,17, with the aim of exchanging experiences and joint projects to serve orphans in Kuwait, and reviewing the society›s latest developments in the field of service and care for orphans to implement the same ideas in Kuwaiti society.

Misr Al-Mahrousa «Baladi» Society is a non-profit organization that takes care of orphans, mothers and widows, and works charitable projects that participate in reform efforts with developmental, educational and educational programs for children, youth and women to enable them to invest their capabilities and resources available to them to achieve individual happiness and well-being. The branches of the Misr Al-Mahrousa Society are spread in several governorates in Egypt, and the Society works in several voluntary charitable projects to serve orphans and their families.

The Khairal-Kuwait Foundation was keen to obtain membership in various international organizations, in order to ensure that its work is carried out in accordance with international standards approved by major international organizations and United Nations organizations, and it has a legal umbrella to ensure that it provides its services locally at the highest level, and that also enables it to provide its services outside the State of Kuwait.

The Foundation has also been keen to expand the base of its services provided so that the matter is not limited to the category of orphans only, but also to serve those with special needs and the elderly. Therefore, Khairal-Kuwait Foundation, represented by the Chairman of the Board of Directors Mr. Nasser Muhammad Al-Ayyar, became a member of the Board of Directors of the International Federation of Aging in Toronto, Canada, and this was officially announced in London on October 2019 ,27.

Since the first day of the declaration of Khairal-Kuwait Charity Foun- dation on December 31, 2007 and the beginning of its actual work, the Foundation has been able to provide many services to the category of orphans and then those with special needs, and thus the Foundation has been able to achieve many achievements during more than 14 years since its establishment. The Foundation’s achievements have been characterized by plural- ism and inclusiveness in several areas, whether in social projects to serve orphans or construction projects, or providing technical and logistical support to them. The Foundation was able to diversify its activities and develop gradually, until the work of the Foundation became institutionalized with won- derful fingerprints that can be guided by any other institution working in the same field, with the services it provided in the field of serving -or phans, incubating them and combating orphans, in addition to Serving people with special needs. The achievements of the foundation were not limited to serving orphans, but rather they went beyond serving those in charge of them by providing training courses, workshops, and exchanging experiences with relevant regional and international foundations and organizations, in order to improve the Foundation›s services, innovate in its work, and provide pioneering achievements. Alghanim Industries Group donated large sums of nearly half a million Kuwaiti dinars to support the project of renovating and rehabilitating orphans houses and building a central kitchen and a medical clinic for families. The company also supervised the construction of these buildings because of the variety of experiences the group has in many areas of construction and building. The company has been known for its hard work as one of the best employers in the Middle East. The Kuwait Center for Humanitarian Documentation «Fanar», which is a voluntary, non- profit organization concerned with documenting humanitarian work in the State of Kuwait, provided its distinguished and varied media support for the activities and programs of Khairal-Kuwait Foundation, through its television and radio programs, social media and its website. This book deals with documenting the work, achievements and projects of Khairal Kuwait Charity Foundation during the 14 years from 2007 to 2020. On December 2007 ,31, the Ministry of Social Affairs and Labor issued a decision approving the declaration of Khairal Kuwait Charity Foundation. Since that date, the foundation has made great achievements thanks to God Almighty and then thanks to the efforts of those in charge of the charity, donors, supporters and volunteers.
