Page 3 of 16 Barry Taylor racing photographs Accession 2010.33 BIOGRAPHICAL NOTE Retired California Superior Court judge Barry Taylor had a passion for racing since his teenage years. Growing up in Los Angeles California in the early 1960s, he embraced the nascent sports car racing culture and as a teen crewed for various sports car racing teams around Los Angeles. After establishing his legal practice, Taylor continued to attend races and began taking photographs of friends racing vintage sports cars. His photos were published in national automotive and racing magazines and for several commercial campaigns. Taylor participated for 10 years as a driver, piloting an ELVA Mk.6 in vintage races and an SCCA spec-racer. After his appointment to the California Superior Court in 1991, Taylor focused his pastime efforts on driving his car rather than photography. SCOPE AND CONTENT NOTE The Barry Taylor racing photographs are comprised of a variety of image formats including 35mm color and black and white negatives, contact sheets and 35mm color and black and white slides. Images document various types of professional, amateur and vintage races throughout California, Arizona and Washington. Also included are a number of images from the 1984 Los Angeles Olympics and Paralympics. Subjects include various track and field events and track cycling (bicycle racing). ARRANGEMENT The images are arranged in two series then chronologically followed by original volume number. Within the Auto Racing series, each race is listed chronologically within a given year. Where available, race dates are included. In addition to race, race type and date, the original sheet identification numbers have been retained and included on the slide or negative sleeve. IN c I N Bowling Green, Kentucky, founded in 1798, is a beautiful Southern city nestled adjacent to the Barren River and set amid the undulating foothills of south~central Kentucky. Long before Bowling Green was known as the home of Western Kentucky University, the General Motors Corvette assembly plant, the National Corvette Museum, and the birthplace of Duncan Hines of cake mix fame, the town forged a progressive but not aggressive attempt to become a community of consequence. The Civil War hampered this progress, but the march quickened after the difficult years of Reconstruction. Transportation was always an important component of this growth. Over the years, Bowling Green enjoyed access to good roads, river traffic via steamboats and barges, rail service on the Louisville and Nashville Railroad, and, by the late 1930s, a developing airport. This transportation infrastructure placed Bowling Green on solid footing to benefit from the economic boom after World War II.
