His work covers many genre’s and his experience both in Australia and the USA over the years has brought him many great opportunities. Originally from Canberra Don was first seen and heard when he appeared in the feature film Monkey Grip (alongside Divinyls). Later Don had a stint as a touring member of Dragon as well as the rock group Big Storm but his most consistent work through the years has been in film and TV. More recently Don has been collaborating with his partner Sunny Amoreena on her original recordings. A story in The Australian here (may be subscriber limited, google text for original) by Iain Shedden on 13th September 2014 under the header A life of song, and lifesaving surgery: a Sunny success story provided these additional details about Robinson and Amoreena: As a child, Sunny Amoreena didn’t have many prospects as a musician. Or of having lots of friends — or even of surviving into adulthood. At the age of three, while growing up in Canberra, Amoreena was disembowelled by a swimming pool filter, an injury that prevented her from having a normal life for the next 30 years. She spent most of her childhood in hospitals or at home, unable to play with other children because she was too weak. “I was incredibly lucky to survive that,” the 32- year-old said yesterday, near her home at Bronte Beach in Sydney. “People before that had not survived. There were predictions that I wouldn’t live for long and would be on machines for years. Because of that there was a lot of isolation.” Amoreena’s story is one of triumph over adversity, and of how music can be a life- affirming inspiration. Three months ago, the singer had successful, groundbreaking surgery developed by a team of Australian surgeons specialising in her injuries. It means that, next week, when Amoreena launches her debut album Check For Wolves in Sydney, it will mark a new chapter in her life, one in which she has a clean bill of health and the prospect of a normal life as well as a long-term music career. “They worked out that I was missing three of the crucial ligaments that hold up the abdomen. “They basically restrung me and it has completely changed my life.” Amoreena is grateful to the surgeons — Sydney’s Darren Gold and Peter Petrof and Melbourne’s Max Haberfield — for giving her a “little miracle”, but she is indebted also to music, a world into which she retreated and found solace soon after her accident. From the age of five, she played piano and wrote songs as well as listening intently to her parents’ record collection. Only now is she able to bring that talent to the public. “I’ve always written songs. I have boxes of them. The battle with health has been a big thing, but with music it doesn’t matter what state you’re in. You can work as a little hermit.” Amoreena and her musician/producer partner Don Miller-Robinson have spent the past 10 years working on her songs, flitting between Sydney and Los Angeles, where he does much of his work, when she has been able to travel. Her album was completed two years ago, which was when Amoreena suffered kidney failure. “My health fell in a heap and it was an 18-month mystery to try and find out what had gone on.” Now, thanks to the surgery, she can look forward to her album launch next Thursday. “I feel like I’ve got a chance to do something now. To perform.” She invited the surgeons, but they will be in Munich presenting her case at a conference (Below: Don Miller-Robinson). .

  • The Collation of the Charles Sturt University Wagga Campus Band Posters
The Collation of the Charles Sturt University Wagga Campus Band Posters Regional Archives Summer Scholarship 2011/2012 By Cecelia Steele Introduction In 2010 I was put forward to get an accurate listing of the band posters that were previously displayed in the Auditorium at Charles Sturt University, Wagga Wagga Main Campus. In order for this task to be completed all the posters needed to be identified and put into chronological order (where possible). Any distinctive features that may be useful in narrowing down the identification process would also need to be noted; this helped when going through other resources, such as the Hungappa and Grapphorea, in order to find out additional information about the dates of performances so as to put the posters in order. The purpose of getting a concise listing of the band posters was so that it could be recorded and also so that some of the significant bands that have visited could be identified. It also makes it easier if in the future for the posters to be digitally reproduced as duplicate copies could be identified. The posters were in varying conditions; some are laminated, ripped, faded, frail, and many of the older posters have been glued onto wooden board – it is uncertain whether this was done as a preservation or display technique, but regardless it has resulted in the posters deteriorating and fading, with the glue cracking and breaking down the paper over time. This has made the identification process more difficult as in some cases the dates could no longer be read. This report will give a brief history of the band performances as discovered through the posters and the student magazines, the condition of the posters, the method that was used in order to collect this information and to arrange the posters in chronological order, and some difficulties encountered while trying to discover the dates.

By far the most pervasive and long-lived was the revival of psychedelia, that kept recurring throughout the Eighties and the Nineties. Los Angeles had its own movement, the "Paisley Underground". Psychedelia became merely a pretext to concoct baroque, oneiric and hypnotic sounds, often with the help of keyboards and strings. Byrds-ian jangling guitars and naive melodies a` la Hollies dominate Emergency Third Rail Power Trip (feb/mar - oct 1983) by Rain Parade (1), with Matt Piucci on vocals and Dave Roback on guitar, as well as the EP Baroque Hoedown (fall 1982 - dec 1982) and the album Sixteen Tambourines (? 1983 - oct 1983) by Mike Quercio's Three O'Clock (1). Needless to say, the Paisley Underground was only the tip of the iceberg. The Dream Syndicate (12), formed by guitarists Steve Wynn and Karl Precoda and bassist Kendra Smith, acted as the natural liaison between Television (and the new wave in general) and the new generation of psychedelic rockers.

Chapter 6 An 'Orwellian Vision' Growth and Decline 1975 -1997 In a tiny inner city pub The amps were getting stacked Leads were getting wound up It was full of pissed Anzacs 'Got no more gigs for Tuesday nights' said the barman to the star, 'We're putting pokies in the lounge and strippers in the bar' The star, he raised his fingers and said 'fuck this fucking hole' But to his roadie said 'it's the death of rock and roll' "There ain't no single place left to play amplified guitar Every place is servin' long blacks if they're not already tapas bars ...1 From the late 1970s the Australian music industry benefited from sustained media networks prepared to air local product on television and radio, and the willingness of venue owners to hire rock bands, to mutual profit. Independent scenes developed in Sydney (the Art Unit, Paris Theatre, the Grand Hotel, the Sussex Hotel) and Melbourne (the Tropicana Club, Crystal Ballroom, Clifton Hills Community Centre) and enabled experimental musics to exist and overlap within the commercial centres.2 Fringe scenes produced bands of various influence and success: the Birthday Party, Laughing Clowns, X, the Models, Whirlywild, the Thought Criminals, Hunters and Collectors. As had been the case since 1957, Sydney and Melbourne attracted performers frustrated with minimal or non• existent local scenes elsewhere. The Go-Betweens and the Riptides escaped an authoritarian State Government attempting to eliminate rock performances, and a tepid Brisbane scene favouring heavy metal cover bands.3 Similar lack of opportunities resulted in an influx of Perth bands on the east coast circuits: the Triffids, the Scientists and the Hoodoo Gurus.
