A typical example was the Died Pretty song which ran over the end credits. At the time Died Pretty was reckoned to be a coming major force in the pop game, though in the end they never quite made it. The group has a detailed wiki here, and inter alia, it notes about the February 1996 album Solo, “Its singles ‘Cuttin’ Up Her Legs’ (September 1995) and ‘Good at Love’ (November) failed to chart and Died Pretty were dropped by Sony in April 1996.” Still at least they had a song with a good hook at the end of a relatively successful feature film. Lyrics for Good at Love, as heard in the film (note the singer tends to swallow his words, so these are on a ‘best guess’ basis and might be worthy of a ‘misheard lyrics’ prize): Pulls down inside as she comes to her senses Calls other names as she jumps to defences Swears on my words as she clears for the rundown Calls out my name as she laughs out loud I never was that good at love I never was that good at love Who’s for the ride as she crawls over fences It’s on a rise and she swings and then tenses Makes up her mind as she stalls for the right time Howls out her name as she leaves me behind Because I never was that good at love I never was that good at love I never was that good at love I never was that good at love I never was that good at love Because I never was that good at love I never was that good at love I never was that good at love I want to tell you again I never was that good at love I want to say it again I never was that good at love ... (fade out) CD: A CD of the film’s soundtrack was released, with at least two different kinds of slick: CD (ST) Polydor. 5357282. 1996. Contains dialogue from the film. Let’s Do It (Let’s Fall In Love) (Cole Porter) Vocals: Simon Holmes & Morgana Ancone (Warner Chappell) 21. Good At Love (Brett Myers/Ron Peno) Vocals: Died Pretty (Polygram Music) Composer: While most of the soundtrack consists of imported pop music, there is some underscore, and composer Oleh Witer maintained the pop connection as the founder of a band popular in the late 1980s, Big Pig, on which he did vocals and percussion. Witer also turned up on the soundtrack for Young Einstein. Big Pig has a wiki listing here. On the basis that there can’t be too many arts-orientated Melbourne-based people going by the name Oleh Witer, it seems that Witer might have later reinvented himself as an artist. An Oleh Witer is listed at the Jackman Gallery here, with examples of work, including details such as these: Oleh Witer is a still life painter who draws his subject matter both from nature and from man made objects. He uses various process devices and pictorial elements to create evocative oil paintings which explore the divide between narrative and descriptive, representational and abstract. His work displays great attention to detail, both in the rendering of the subject and to the way the subject is lit. Oleh won the painting category at the 2007 Churchie Emerging Art Prize and the Peoples Choice Award at The 2007 Williamstown Contemporary Art Prize. He was a finalist in the 2007 and 2009 Sulman Prize. • The Collation of the Charles Sturt University Wagga Campus Band Posters
The Collation of the Charles Sturt University Wagga Campus Band Posters Regional Archives Summer Scholarship 2011/2012 By Cecelia Steele Introduction In 2010 I was put forward to get an accurate listing of the band posters that were previously displayed in the Auditorium at Charles Sturt University, Wagga Wagga Main Campus. In order for this task to be completed all the posters needed to be identified and put into chronological order (where possible). Any distinctive features that may be useful in narrowing down the identification process would also need to be noted; this helped when going through other resources, such as the Hungappa and Grapphorea, in order to find out additional information about the dates of performances so as to put the posters in order. The purpose of getting a concise listing of the band posters was so that it could be recorded and also so that some of the significant bands that have visited could be identified. It also makes it easier if in the future for the posters to be digitally reproduced as duplicate copies could be identified. The posters were in varying conditions; some are laminated, ripped, faded, frail, and many of the older posters have been glued onto wooden board – it is uncertain whether this was done as a preservation or display technique, but regardless it has resulted in the posters deteriorating and fading, with the glue cracking and breaking down the paper over time. This has made the identification process more difficult as in some cases the dates could no longer be read. This report will give a brief history of the band performances as discovered through the posters and the student magazines, the condition of the posters, the method that was used in order to collect this information and to arrange the posters in chronological order, and some difficulties encountered while trying to discover the dates.

By far the most pervasive and long-lived was the revival of psychedelia, that kept recurring throughout the Eighties and the Nineties. Los Angeles had its own movement, the "Paisley Underground". Psychedelia became merely a pretext to concoct baroque, oneiric and hypnotic sounds, often with the help of keyboards and strings. Byrds-ian jangling guitars and naive melodies a` la Hollies dominate Emergency Third Rail Power Trip (feb/mar - oct 1983) by Rain Parade (1), with Matt Piucci on vocals and Dave Roback on guitar, as well as the EP Baroque Hoedown (fall 1982 - dec 1982) and the album Sixteen Tambourines (? 1983 - oct 1983) by Mike Quercio's Three O'Clock (1). Needless to say, the Paisley Underground was only the tip of the iceberg. The Dream Syndicate (12), formed by guitarists Steve Wynn and Karl Precoda and bassist Kendra Smith, acted as the natural liaison between Television (and the new wave in general) and the new generation of psychedelic rockers.

Chapter 6 An 'Orwellian Vision' Growth and Decline 1975 -1997 In a tiny inner city pub The amps were getting stacked Leads were getting wound up It was full of pissed Anzacs 'Got no more gigs for Tuesday nights' said the barman to the star, 'We're putting pokies in the lounge and strippers in the bar' The star, he raised his fingers and said 'fuck this fucking hole' But to his roadie said 'it's the death of rock and roll' "There ain't no single place left to play amplified guitar Every place is servin' long blacks if they're not already tapas bars ...1 From the late 1970s the Australian music industry benefited from sustained media networks prepared to air local product on television and radio, and the willingness of venue owners to hire rock bands, to mutual profit. Independent scenes developed in Sydney (the Art Unit, Paris Theatre, the Grand Hotel, the Sussex Hotel) and Melbourne (the Tropicana Club, Crystal Ballroom, Clifton Hills Community Centre) and enabled experimental musics to exist and overlap within the commercial centres.2 Fringe scenes produced bands of various influence and success: the Birthday Party, Laughing Clowns, X, the Models, Whirlywild, the Thought Criminals, Hunters and Collectors. As had been the case since 1957, Sydney and Melbourne attracted performers frustrated with minimal or non• existent local scenes elsewhere. The Go-Betweens and the Riptides escaped an authoritarian State Government attempting to eliminate rock performances, and a tepid Brisbane scene favouring heavy metal cover bands.3 Similar lack of opportunities resulted in an influx of Perth bands on the east coast circuits: the Triffids, the Scientists and the Hoodoo Gurus.
