ICE ICE BABY The popularity of winter skating rinks in London has grown dramatically over the last few years, with most of the seasonal outdoor rinks opening for business in November. There’s few better ways to feel all festive and celebrate the coldest of seasons than to take to the ice, ideally in a historic setting. Amongst the fi rst to host a winter skating rink wasSomerset House, off the Strand, and it remains one of the most popular. Also busy is the Natural History Museum Ice Rink, which has its own bar serving snacks, drinks and mulled wine, and the Greenwich ice rink, which opened for the fi rst time last year and will be returning this winter. Also returning for a second year is the Tower Of London ice rink, while you can also skate beneath the skyscrapers at the Canary Wharf rink.

SEAL UNKLEJAM FREEMASONS System Unklejam Unmixed (Warners) (Virgin) (Loaded) “A return to my roots,” says After three excellent We wouldn’t normally Seal of his latest album. “I wanted to go back to the guitar, introductory singles, Unklejam finally get around to review a remix album, except for the fact that a) we to the very first instrument I wrote ‘Crazy’ and ‘Killer’ on, releasing their debut album, and it’s a surprisingly diverse couldn’t do a proper review for the new Girls Aloud album and get back to the fundamentals of what I really love to and mixed set. Their first three singles have all pointed because at the time of going to press we’d only been sent do.” He calls System a “quintessential” Seal album, which is towards a band that revels in electro funk and pop, and a five-track sampler, andb) This is the Freemasons, the probably just a nice way of spinning the fact this – his fifth Unklejam certainly doesn’t disappoint on that front. Singles current kings of the remix. In fact, could their stock, as studio outing – is very much Seal-by-numbers. That’s not ‘Luv Ya’ and ‘What Am I Fighting For’ kick off proceedings, the world’s most in-demand remix duo, possibly be any actually a bad thing. Who doesn’t have a soft spot for either and ‘Just Like Me’ works a similarly minimal electro and higher? It’s generally acknowledged that they helped save of those aforementioned classics? Even better, he’s found a clubby vibe. ‘Go’ comes across as a bit of a low-rent ‘Toxic’, the whole Beyoncé B’Day campaign, courtesy of their like-minded soul in the shape of Stuart Price – the producer with a dash of , while old-skool squelchy synths remixes of the ‘Beautiful Lie’ and ‘Green Light’, while they’re who co-wrote Madonna’s Confessions On A Dancefloor and mark out the atmospheric ‘Touch’. Proving they’ve got arguably responsible for one of the best tracks on the Kylie polished it to perfection. System is a similarly accomplished more strings to their bow (or more programmes on their album (‘The One’ – see above). Here they’ve remixed their set of upbeat, club-inspired ditties. Sadly, there’s still computers), ‘Cry’ goes off on a midnight jazz tangent, with own debut album, and it’s a non-stop tour de force of nothing to quite match the quality of his early global a solitary trumpet reminiscent of ‘Tomorrow’ from the Bugsy contemporary disco delights. More than anyone else, their smashes, but it’s the sort of album that you wish George Malone sountrack. ‘Luving You’ nicks the electric piano from sound dominates many gay dancefloors at the moment, Michael would ditch the weed to create; hook-laden, soulful the intro of Queen’s ‘You’re My Best Friend’, and – although and you’ll recognise plenty of these tracks, from current pop. Highlights include the naggingly irresistible ‘The Right they’d probably hate the comparison – skips along on hit ‘Uninvited’ with Bailey Tzuke to ‘Love On My Mind’ with Life’, title track ‘System’, lead single ‘Amazing’ and delicate a mellow, Mika-like pop trip. Recent single ‘Stereo’ is a Amanda Wilson. They truly do seem to have mastered the ballad ‘Rolling’. Elsewhere, things get a little too saccharine, sublime highlight, as is album closer, ‘Daddy Genes’. “I never art of capturing that intoxicating whoosh of excitement on an album that the singer admits was inspired by his wife meant to make you cry, and I never meant to say bye bye, you feel when your favourite track hits the soundsystem in and children. “I am finally in a content and happy place and I never meant to treat you badly - it’s something that your favourite club… and then mixing it to perfection and to the point where I feel like I need to sing about it,” he I learnt from daddy”, they sing, sounding a little like ‘Miss adding some wailing diva vocals for good measure. explains on the accompanying press release. Although one’s Jackson’ by Outkast. Lyrics are not their strong point, but Unmixed comes with over 150 acapella vocals, drum and glad that he’s in such a chirpy mood, you may want to skip this is one of their more heartfelt and moving numbers. If snare loops and special effects, allowing any budding DJs the plodding ‘Wedding Day’, which we’re helpfully informed this debut as a whole doesn’t quite live up to its influences, to do their own Freemasons remixes. So, expect various he wrote “the morning he wed supermodel Heidi Klum”. Unklejam are at least boldly aiming high, and this serves as versions of these songs to be swimming around the London ‘Kiss From A Rose’ it ain’t. AG a suitable mission of intent. He then moved onto the love handles on my sides and exactly the same sensations were felt.
